Spatial distribution of agricultural pesticide use and predicted wetland exposure in the Canadian Prairie Pothole Region.

Agricultural pest control products are a major cause of degradation of water quality and biodiversity loss worldwide. In the Canadian Prairie Pothole Region, the landscape is characterized by millions of ecologically important wetlands, but also large farm sizes and high agrochemical use. Despite the region's agricultural intensity, the spatial extent of pesticide use and likelihood of pesticides contaminating surface water has been poorly studied. Here, we estimated the pesticide use patterns for three main groups (herbicides, fungicides and insecticides) using the most recent (2015) pesticid

Multi-Omics Integration Drives Precision Breeding in Sorghum: Molecular Dissection and Breeding Practice.

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.), the fifth-most important cereal crop globally, serves as a cornerstone crop for food security, forage production, and bioenergy feedstock on arid and semi-arid marginal lands, owing to its high water use efficiency derived from C4 photosynthesis and exceptional tolerance to abiotic stresses. Conventional sorghum breeding has long been constrained by insufficient genetic dissection of complex traits, the "black box" of genotype-to-phenotype mapping, and poorly understood genotype-by-environment interactions, resulting in stagnant genetic gain. In recent years, rapi

Adapting irrigated agriculture to climate change in arid regions: A hydroeconomic optimization approach.

Climate change presents considerable challenges to agricultural production. The integration of autonomous and planned adaptation is a critical concern for developing effective climate adaptation strategies in arid irrigated agriculture, which is subject to multifaceted stresses of water scarcity, salinization and climate change. To identify effective climate adaptation strategies, we developed an integrated hydroeconomic optimization model that incorporates agro-hydrological processes and climate change impacts into an economic optimization framework for climate-adaptive allocations of agricul

Auxin-rhizomicrobiome interactions as a driver of climate-resilient root architecture: a conceptual framework for sustainable agriculture.

Abiotic stresses such as drought and salinity represent major constraints to global crop productivity, necessitating innovative strategies for enhancing plant resilience. As a critical regulator of root system architecture, auxin (specifically indole-3-acetic acid (IAA)) functions as a vital cross-kingdom signaling molecule that mediates dynamic interactions between plants and auxin-synthesizing rhizosphere microorganisms. This review explores the role of auxin as a cross-kingdom signaling molecule mediating interactions between plants and the rhizosphere microbiome. Auxin-producing plant grow

DeepEffector: A Protein Language Model-Driven Deep Learning Framework for Effector Prediction in Fungi and Oomycetes.

Crop diseases caused by fungal and oomycete pathogens threaten sustainable agricultural production, and the efficient identification of pathogen effectors is essential for understanding virulence mechanisms and developing disease-resistant crops. However, the rapid evolutionary diversification of effectors often obscures conserved motifs, limiting the effectiveness of conventional computational approaches and making experimental prioritization challenging. To address this, we developed DeepEffector, a high-precision predictor for fungal and oomycete effector identification. DeepEffector levera

Styela clava-Derived Peptide Cla-H Is a Promising Green Biofungicide for Crop Protection.

Background: Crop fungal diseases cause huge yield losses globally, and the abuse of chemical fungicides has led to severe resistance and environmental risks. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) represent ideal green alternatives, but poor salt tolerance and high production costs limit their field application. Results: In this study, we developed a His-tag engineering strategy to enhance salt tolerance of antifungal peptides, and identified a novel peptide Cla-H derived from Styela clava. Cla-H was efficiently expressed via secretory fermentation in Pichia pastoris, and its crude fermentation superna

Phytoavailability, human risk assessment and transfer characteristics of cadmium and zinc contamination from urban gardens in Kano, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Quantitative data about phytoavailability and transfer into consumed plant parts for heavy metals in intensively managed urban vegetable production areas of sub-Saharan Africa are scarce. We therefore studied the transfer of zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) from soil to the root and subsequent translocation to edible portions of four vegetables in six urban gardens. RESULTS: While respective diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)-available Zn and Cd concentrations ranged from 18 to 66 mg kg(-1) and from 0.19 to 0.35 mg kg(-1) , respectively, in soils, total Zn and Cd were 8.4-256 mg

Consumer Evaluation of Agricultural Products Produced in Areas Affected by Natural Disasters: A Case Study of Damaged Apples in Japan.

This study examines how consumers perceive agricultural products affected by natural disasters, using apples in Japan as a case study. Typhoons and other natural disasters frequently damage the surface of apples during the production season, causing significant harm to farmers' businesses, particularly when a large typhoon hits the production area. To maintain the sustainability of agricultural production, consumers need to purchase damaged crops at a certain price. To assess the effect of product attributes, such as appearance and price, and personal attributes of respondents, we conducted a

High-polyphenol extracts from Sorghum bicolor attenuate replication of Legionella pneumophila within RAW 264.7 macrophages.

Polyphenols derived from a variety of plants have demonstrated antimicrobial activity against diverse microbial pathogens. Legionella pneumophila is an intracellular bacterial pathogen that opportunistically causes a severe inflammatory pneumonia in humans, called Legionnaires' Disease, via replication within macrophages. Previous studies demonstrated that tea polyphenols attenuate L. pneumophila intracellular replication within mouse macrophages via increased tumor necrosis factor (TNF) production. Sorghum bicolor is a sustainable cereal crop that thrives in arid environments and is well-suit

Regulation of antibiotic production in root-colonizing Peudomonas spp. and relevance for biological control of plant disease.

Certain strains of fluorescent pseudomonads are important biological components of agricultural soils that are suppressive to diseases caused by pathogenic fungi on crop plants. The biocontrol abilities of such strains depend essentially on aggressive root colonization, induction of systemic resistance in the plant, and the production of diffusible or volatile antifungal antibiotics. Evidence that these compounds are produced in situ is based on their chemical extraction from the rhizosphere and on the expression of antibiotic biosynthetic genes in the producer strains colonizing plant roots.

Analysis of 22-year Drought Characteristics in Heilongjiang Province Based on Temperature Vegetation Drought Index.

Heilongjiang Province is the main grain producing region in China and an important part of Northeast China Plain, which is one of the three black soil belts in the world. The cultivated region of black soil accounts for 50.6% of the black soil region in Northeast China. Due to the obvious rise of temperature and uneven distribution of precipitation in the 20th century, it has been considered to be one of the important reasons for agricultural drought and aridity. Under the background of climate change, understanding the multiyear changes and occurrence characteristics of cultivated land drough

Biocontrol of Mycotoxigenic Fungi by Actinobacteria.

Actinobacteria are well known for their production of metabolites of interest. They have been previously studied to identify new antibiotics in medical research and for their ability to stimulate plant growth in agronomic research. Actinobacteria represents a real source of potential biocontrol agents (BCAs) today. With the aim of reducing the use of phytosanitary products by 50% with the different Ecophyto plans, a possible application is the fight against mycotoxin-producing fungi in food matrices and crops using BCAs. To deal with this problem, the use of actinobacteria, notably belonging t

Elaeis guineensis Jacq. as a Bioindicator of Aluminum Hydroxide-Induced Cytogenotoxicity in Root Meristems.

This study evaluates the cytotoxic effects of aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)2) on root growth and cell division of Elaeis guineensis roots. Using Al(OH)₃ concentrations ranging from 5 to 250 mg/L, both radicle growth and nuclear and chromosomal abnormalities, including mitotic indices and the presence of micronuclei, anaphase bridges, and other alterations, were analyzed. The results showed that elevated concentrations of Al(OH)₃ (particularly 150 to 250 mg/L) significantly inhibit root growth, reduce the mitotic index, and increase the frequency of nuclear abnormalities. The presence of aluminum-

Chromosome assembled and annotated genome sequence of Aspergillus flavus NRRL 3357.

Aspergillus flavus is an opportunistic pathogen of crops, including peanuts and maize, and is the second leading cause of aspergillosis in immunocompromised patients. A. flavus is also a major producer of the mycotoxin, aflatoxin, a potent carcinogen, which results in significant crop losses annually. The A. flavus isolate NRRL 3357 was originally isolated from peanut and has been used as a model organism for understanding the regulation and production of secondary metabolites, such as aflatoxin. A draft genome of NRRL 3357 was previously constructed, enabling the development of molecular tool

Retrospective study of preventive effect of maize on mortality from Parkinson's disease in Japan.

The findings of a negative association between past maize (Zea mays) production and current Parkinson's disease mortality by each prefecture in Japan tends to support the hypothesis that the nutritional condition that causes niacin deficiency might protect people from Parkinson's disease. Specifically, the negative association between both the area planted for dried corn in 1960, 1970 or 1977 and the area planted for sweet corn in 1960 and age-adjusted death rates for Parkinson's disease is ecological evidence supporting the hypothesis. Extending the analysis to other cultivated crops, even st
