Acetylsalicylic acid is one of the most commonly used drugs and high on the list of causes of drug reactions. Since early publication on 1902 by Hirschberg, a great deal of information has emerged on aspirin sensitivity, including data on epidemiology, further characterization of the two major subtypes of sensitivity (bronchospastic and urticarial types), hereditary aspects, cross-reactions to other nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs, and methods of desensitization. Although the pathogenesis of aspirin-sensitive asthma remains unknown, several theories has been proposed to explain the disease

This study examines acute and delayed adverse reactions reported in naturalistic psychedelic use, focusing on their associations with substance-use patterns, contextual variables, and user motivations. Using an online survey incorporating the Psychedelic Use Scale, data were collected from a large naturalistic sample (N = 1022) to analyze patterns of self-reported adverse reactions. Acute adverse reactions were consistently associated with similar delayed adverse reactions, suggesting continuity between immediate and subsequent self-reported adverse experiences. Furthermore, most acute adverse

Shellfish, including various species of mollusks (e.g., mussels, clams, and oysters) and crustaceans (e.g., shrimp, prawn, lobster, and crab), have been a keystone of healthy dietary recommendations due to their valuable protein content. In parallel with their consumption, allergic reactions related to shellfish may be increasing. Adverse reactions to shellfish are classified into different groups: (1) Immunological reactions, including IgE and non-IgE allergic reactions; (2) non-immunological reactions, including toxic reactions and food intolerance. The IgE-mediated reactions occur within ab

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: The precise management of hypersensitivity reactions to direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) and the potential for cross-reactivity among different DOACs remain unclear. In such cases, switching between DOACs may be feasible and could be considered, but close monitoring for adverse effects is essential, tailored to individual patient responses and tolerability.
ABSTRACT: Hypersensitivity reactions to DOACs, though considered rare, have been documented. This report describes the case of a 28-year-old male with a history of testicular cancer who was recently diagnosed with d

College students who had experienced no personal bereavement in the September 11 terrorist attacks completed questionnaires between 3 and 5 weeks after the attacks and 5 months later. Cross-sectional and longitudinal structural equation model (SEM) analyses revealed that general distress and disaster-focused distress are discernable reactions following a collective loss. Both types of distress were higher among women and by those reporting social strain. General distress was associated with previous stressful events and mental health issues. Perceived similarity to the victims predicted disast

BACKGROUND: Reports of allergy to lupine derivatives (as de novo sensitization or cross-reactivity in subjects allergic to peanut) are increasing as their use in food products increases.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess: (1) lupine tolerance in a group of children allergic to peanut, using lupine enriched-pasta instead of raw flour as has been done in previous clinical studies; (2) whether technological treatments of lupine modify its cross-reactivity or co-sensitization with peanut; (3) the role of lupine seed proteins in sensitization, and (4) to identify the eliciting doses

Allergic reactions to penicillins have been reported since the 1950s, shortly after their introduction as therapeutic agents. An increasing number of reported anaphylactic reactions and other adverse effects proved this to be a serious public health problem. Fifty years later, betalactam-induced hypersensitivity is the most frequent cause of drug reaction and has been the source of a great number of publications. Clinically, betalactam-induced allergic reactions may be immediate or non-immediate according to the time interval between drug intake and the occurrence of symptoms. The diagnosis of

The Spanish Societies of Allergology and Anesthesiology have established a protocol for action for the performance of allergy tests for anesthesia. The protocol was published by the General Directorate of INSALUD, along with an informed consent form for general and loco-regional anesthesia, on 30 June 1994. Despite this, demands for care and requests for allergologic and anesthetic studies have increased. This review examines the diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic criteria for adverse reactions during general anesthesia according to the most relevant international literature. Pseudoallerg

In serology, lack of specificity can generally be attributed to cross-reactions between different pathogens with antigens bearing similar epitopes. During seroepidemiologic surveys of contagious agalactia of sheep caused by Mycoplasma agalactiae infection, numerous sera were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). A few sera reacted with various antigens coated on plates, including the well with no antigen. This reactivity was not due to cross-reactions as initially suspected, and these multipositive sera were designated false-positive sera. Elimination of this false positivity

Insect venom allergy is the most frequent cause of anaphylaxis in Europe and possibly worldwide. The majority of systemic allergic reactions after insect stings are caused by Hymenoptera, and among these, vespid genera induce most of the systemic sting reactions (SSR). Honey bees are the second leading cause of SSR. Depending on the global region, other Hymenoptera such as different ant genera are responsible for SSR. Widely distributed hornets and bumblebees or local vespid or bee genera rarely induce SSR. Hematophagous insects such as mosquitoes and horse flies usually cause (large) local re

Sensitization to Hymenoptera venom in patients without a history of systemic allergic reactions to Hymenoptera stings is frequently found and can be due to the presence of specific IgE to cross-reactive carbohydrate determinants (CCD). This study investigates 105 pollen allergic subjects for the presence of specific IgE to honeybee or wasp venom, pollen, the MUXF3 carbohydrate epitope from bromelain and recombinant Hymenoptera venom components. In addition, in a subgroup of patients (n = 10) a basophil activation test (BAT) using bee and wasp venom was performed. Specific IgE to Hymenoptera ve

INTRODUCTION: The blood meal source of sandflies provides valuable information about the vector/host interaction and allows for an understanding of American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) transmission mechanisms. The aim of this study was to identify the blood meal sources of Lutzomyia (Nyssomyia) intermedia in an endemic area of leishmaniasis in Brazil's State of Paraná using a precipitin test.
METHODS: Sandflies were collected in the rural locality of Epitácio Pessoa within the City of Adrianópolis, State of Paraná, in southern Brazil. A total of 864 female sandflies were captured, and 862 (

BACKGROUND: Corticosteroids may cause immediate or delayed hypersensitivity. In 1989, based on structural and clinical characteristics, we put forward a classification of corticosteroids into four cross-reacting groups, namely group A, B, C, and D, the latter later subdivided into two subgroups, i.e. D1 and D2. The constituents on the D-ring of the corticosteroid-molecule are considered to have a central role for binding to skin proteins and for cross-reactions patterns; however, halogenation of the molecules is also interfering.
OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical data and analyse simultaneous

Antiheart immune reactions have been reported in patients with Chagas' disease, and we have postulated that the observed cardiac lesions are mediated by autoimmune antiheart reactions elicited by the etiologic agent Trypanosoma cruzi. In this report, BALB/c mice infected with a low inoculum of T. cruzi developed splenic lymphocyte cytotoxicity against normal syngeneic neonatal cardiac myofibers in vitro 150 days after infection, whereas splenic lymphocytes obtained from mice at 15, 45, 90, or 120 days after infection or from matched controls did not. No antiheart antibody or antibody-directed

BACKGROUND: Usually hazelnut allergic patients suffer from the tree pollen associated oral allergy syndrome (OAS) caused by cross-reactive structures. Anaphylactic reactions elicited by hazelnuts happen rarely but are of high clinical significance. Considering that hazelnuts are ingredients in processed foods, hazelnuts may play an important role as hidden allergens for these high risk patients. Therefore, we analyzed the IgE reactivity of a young woman with severe allergic reactions after ingestion of hazelnuts without any association to tree pollen allergy.
AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of this
