Violent deaths following disasters: A retrospective analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Negative mental health outcomes associated with disaster exposure can increase risks of interpersonal and self-directed violence. However, the link between disaster exposure and increased incidence in violent deaths is not clearly established. STUDY OBJECTIVE: The objective of this work is to assess the incidence of violent deaths in non-disaster and disaster periods across five distinct disaster events. METHODS: This study uses an ecological, quasi-experimental design to assess violent deaths in pre-disaster and disaster periods across five U.S. states (e.g., North Carolina, O

Classification of tropical cyclone rain patterns using convolutional autoencoder.

Heavy rainfall produced by tropical cyclones (TCs) frequently causes wide-spread damage. TCs have different patterns of rain depending on their development stage, geographical location, and surrounding environmental conditions. However, an objective system for classifying TC rain patterns has not yet been established. This study objectively classifies rain patterns of North Atlantic TCs using a Convolutional Autoencoder (CAE). The CAE is trained with 11,991 images of TC rain rates obtained from satellite precipitation estimates during 2000-2020. The CAE consists of an encoder which compresses

A 1-D model to retrieve the vertical profiles of minor atmospheric constituents for cloud microphysical modelling: III. Disturbed weather situations.

A hybrid Monte-Carlo Gear solver developed earlier has been improvised to retrieve the vertical profiles of CH4 and N2O during disturbed weather situations such as western disturbances, tropical cyclones, and heavy rainfall events over the megacities: Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, and Mumbai. Due to rapid changes in the temperature during the passage of these systems over megacities, the percentage differences of CH4 and N2O number concentrations were more compared to the Community Long-term Infrared Microwave Coupled Atmospheric Product System (CLIMCAPS). Therefore, the hybrid solver has been modi

A review of large-scale climate indicators (LSCI) and their environmental and health implications in the Mediterranean region.

Large-scale climate indicators (LSCI) refer to the intricate connections between the atmosphere, oceans, and continents in specific regions. To comprehend the relationship between these vital indicators and atmospheric and climate variability, it is crucial to explore them in detail. The objective of the present study is to gather and review relevant research on LSCI in the Mediterranean area to gain a better understanding of their impacts on atmospheric variability, climate, air quality, ecosystems, and health in the region. Numerous studies have explored LSCI and their effects in the study a

Drivers of natural disaster risk-reduction actions and their temporal dynamics: Insights from surveys during an imminent hurricane threat and its aftermath.

To improve preparedness for natural disasters, it is imperative to understand the factors that enable individual risk-reduction actions. This study offers such insights using innovative real-time (N = 871) and repeated (N = 255) surveys of a sample of coastal residents in Florida regarding flood preparations and their drivers during an imminent threat posed by Hurricane Dorian and its aftermath. Compared with commonly employed cross-sectional surveys, our methodology better represents relationships between preparedness actions undertaken during the disaster threat and their drivers derived fro

Risk and protective factors associated with substance use among Puerto Rican youths after Hurricane María: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Identifying factors associated with post-disaster youth substance use is a crucial element of developing evidence-based prevention and intervention efforts. Hurricane María struck Puerto Rico in September of 2017 and the wide-spread impact from this disaster, including exposure to trauma, displacement, and disrupted social supports had the potential to negatively impact levels of substance use among youth across the archipelago. However, post-disaster substance use remains under-investigated in this context. The current study sought to identify risk and protective factors associate

Aging in Flood-Prone Coastal Areas: Discerning the Health and Well-Being Risk for Older Residents.

Coastal communities are increasingly exposed to more intense and frequent hurricanes, accelerated sea-level rise, and prolonged tidal inundation, yet they are often a preferred retirement destination for older adults vulnerable to flooding and extreme weather events. The unique physical and psychosocial challenges of older population age 65 and over may affect their level of preparedness, capacity to cope with, and ability to respond and recover from a hazard event. Despite the clear vulnerabilities of older residents living in high-risk areas when compared to younger coastal populations, ther

Incidences of Waterborne and Foodborne Diseases After Meteorologic Disasters in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Climate change could increase the number of regions affected by meteorologic disasters. Meteorologic disasters can increase the risk of infectious disease outbreaks, including waterborne and foodborne diseases. Although many outbreaks of waterborne diseases after single disasters have been analyzed, there have not been sufficient studies reporting comprehensive analyses of cases occurring during long-term surveillance after multiple disasters, which could provide evidence of whether meteorologic disasters cause infectious disease outbreaks. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess t

Non-equilibrium zinc uptake onto compost particles from synthetic stormwater.

Zinc uptake onto different particle size compost was evaluated in batch and column studies using a synthetic stormwater to quantify sorption capacity and kinetics. The results showed that the pseudo equilibrium time for uptake increased from 2h to greater than 120h as the particle size of compost increased from 75μm to 6.75mm. This was due to intra-particle diffusion becoming a rate limiting process as the particle size increased. Column effluent data with 1.18mm particles could be fitted by Freundlich isotherm while that from the 4.75mm particles and a mixed particle size columns showed rate
