Despite increasing knowledge of etiopathogenesis, therapy, and recurrence rate of popliteal cysts, they nevertheless occasionally represent clinical problems. We report the case of a 58-year-old rheumatoid arthritis patient in whom a giant recurrent cyst developed very shortly after primary excision. Reports of such large popliteal cysts are rare and very few cases were reported in rheumatoid arthritis patients. Moreover, no such giant recurrent cysts formed so shortly after primary excision. Thus, its occurrence may be partially ascribed to the specific dynamics of fluid flows caused by the a

The etiology of aneurysmal bone cysts is uncertain, but they may originate as a localized arteriovenous malformation. These benign lesions can be primary or occur secondary to an underlying lesion. The majority of patients who present with aneurysmal bone cysts are younger than age 20 years. One half of lesions occur within the long bones and one third involve the spine. Most flat bone lesions, approximately 10%, occur in the pelvis. Fluid-fluid levels are common on CT and MRI but are not pathognomonic. Although aneurysmal bone cyst is benign, there may be aggressive clinical and imaging featu

An extensive body of in vitro data implicates epithelial chloride secretion, mediated through cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein, in generating or maintaining fluid filled cysts in MDCK cells and in human autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). In contrast, few studies have addressed the pathophysiology of fluid secretion in cyst formation and enlargement in autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD). Murine models of targeted disruptions or deletions of specific genes have created opportunities to examine the role of individual gene pro

Intradural spinal arachnoid cysts are a relatively uncommon lesion that may be either intra, or extradural, and intradural spinal arachnoid cysts are even less common. Arachnoid cysts are cerebrospinal fluid collections in the spine that can present with neurological symptoms. The objective of this paper is to describe a rare case of radicular pain due to a spinal arachnoid cyst.

Calcaneal cysts and lipomas are relatively rare, benign bone lesions. They are similar in many ways, including in their location and radiological appearance, but their content differs. Cysts contain fluid whereas lipomas contain fat, although some lesions may exhibit a mixed content. The pathogenesis of the two entities is the subject of controversy. The theory that calcaneal cysts may result from lipomatous necrosis has been widely suggested in the literature, but no such progression has ever been shown. The contrary hypothesis has also been considered, i.e., that the content of regressing cy

During a three-year period, 217 ovarian cystic lesions were evaluated by both fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology and estradiol (E2) assay at Royal Women's Hospital. One hundred three ovarian lesions were subsequently subjected to histologic examination, and 79 cyst fluids were assayed for progesterone. Of the 151 cystic lesions diagnosed by cytology/histology, 50 were follicular cysts, and 90% had E2 content > 20 nmol/L. The remaining 101 nonfollicular cystic lesions represented a heterogeneous group, but 99% had E2 content < 20 nmol/L. The sensitivity of E2 content > 20 nmol/L for follicul…

BACKGROUND: Intraosseous arachnoid cysts are rare and difficult to diagnose. The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical and radiological semiology of petrous and sphenoid arachnoid cysts and to propose a specific management strategy.
METHODS: This was a retrospective, descriptive study of patients with arachnoid cysts, which utilized CT, MRI, and the patients' medical histories.
RESULTS: Ten patients were included in this study. On CT, the lesions were lytic with bony delineation. On MRI, the lesions exhibited the same signals as cerebrospinal fluid and were not enhanced after co

BACKGROUND: Intraparenchymal cysts are rare complications that are most commonly associated with ventriculoperitoneal shunt or external ventricular drain malfunction.
OBSERVATIONS: The authors describe a rare case of intraparenchymal cyst formation after intraparenchymal intracranial pressure (ICP) monitor placement for traumatic brain injury. The cyst developed after device removal, was demonstrated on CT and MR images, and improved following surgical drainage. Bacterial cultures of both the catheter tip and cyst fluid were negative. The cyst showed near-total resolution after device removal…

We present a 45-year-old man with tussive headache and blurred vision found to have obstructive hydrocephalus from a neurocysticercal cyst at the cervicomedullary junction who underwent surgical removal of the cyst. We performed a suboccipital craniectomy to remove the cervicomedullary cyst en bloc. Cyst removal successfully treated the patient's headaches without necessitating permanent cerebrospinal fluid diversion. Neurocysticercosis is the most common parasite infection of the central nervous system causing seizures and, less commonly, hydrocephalus. Intraventricular cysts or arachnoiditis

Intracranial arachnoid cysts are rare cystic-appearing intracranial masses. In rarer cases, the arachnoid cysts originate from brain parenchyma, which is defined as intracerebral arachnoid cyst. Here, we present a patient younger than 2 years with massive intracranial arachnoid cysts (one of which was intracerebral arachnoid cyst), whose clinical symptoms included megacephaly and limb weakness. Ommaya reservoir implantation and repeated aspiration of the intracerebral cyst fluid were performed. The symptoms gradually improved, and the intracerebral arachnoid cyst gradually disappeared during 1…

Maxillary bone epithelial cyst is rare in dogs. A 5-year-old, spayed female miniature schnauzer developed a swelling below the nasal canthus of left eye. Plain radiograph demonstrated a 1.5 cm diameter of radiolucent lesion on the maxillary bone anteroventral to the eye, and contrast dacryocystorhinography confirmed an obstructed nasolarcrimal duct. The swelling showed poor response to antibiotic treatment but responded well to oral prednisolone. Exploratory surgery revealed a cyst-like structure filled with brown serous fluid. Histopathological examination of the removed cyst revealed a doubl

A thoracic duct cyst was excised from the left side of the neck of a 63-year-old woman. It was 6.5cm in length and 3.5cm in width, and was located behind the common carotid artery and jugular vein. The proximal portion of the thoracic duct with a narrowed lumen was in direct contact with the lateral surface of the cyst and the venous angle. The lower end of the cyst extended into the mediastinum to immediately above the aortic arch; the inferior portion of the thoracic duct descended from the bottom of the cyst into the mediastinum behind the aorta. The cyst was unilocular with a fluid content

OBJECTIVE: We evaluate the efficacy and safety of sonographically guided ethanol sclerotherapy for benign thyroid cysts.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We examined 22 patients with benign thyroid cysts (13 complex cysts and nine pure cysts) confirmed by fine-needle aspiration biopsy. Sonographically guided aspiration of the cystic fluid was followed by instillation of absolute ethanol (99.9%) into the cystic cavity: the injected volume of ethanol was 40-100% of the volume of fluid aspirated. The procedure was performed every 1 or 3 months for one or two sessions (mean, 1.2 sessions). Follow-up sonogra

Vestibular schwannomas (VS) are benign neoplasms of the VIII cranial nerve; they account for 6-8% of all intracranial tumors and about 80% of tumors of the cerebellopontine angle. Cystic forms of VS may be particularly dangerous, as they demonstrate faster growth and worse postoperative outcomes. In this study, we performed proteomic analysis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples obtained from patients with solid and cystic forms of VS, as well as cyst fluid from patients with cystic VS. CSF samples from patients with hemifacial spasm were used as controls. Mass spectrometric (MS) analysis resu…

Rectal duplications are rare congenital anomalies that represent 1%-6% of alimentary tract duplications. We report a case of a woman in her 50s who presented to our hospital with perianal pain and urinary retention. She had a history of imperforate anus repaired after birth and dynamic graciloplasty performed during her adulthood for faecal incontinence. Abdominal CT scan showed a fluid collection extending from the electrostimulator, placed in a subcutaneous pocket in the abdomen, to the rectouterine pouch. Infection related to the electrostimulator was assumed and, after a course of antibiot

Arachnoid cysts are an uncommon postoperative complication and can result in back pain, radiculopathy, and/or cauda equina syndrome. For symptomatic postoperative arachnoid cysts, surgical management is the accepted treatment. While excision of arachnoid cysts is the preferred surgical method, cysts with adhesions to nerve roots and/or dura can be treated with cyst fenestration to reduce morbidity of excision. Surgeons should be prepared for dural defects after cyst excision, which can require dural grafting and lumbar drains for cerebrospinal fluid diversion.

BACKGROUND: Currently, the preoperative diagnosis of a pancreatic cyst is based on clinical and imaging findings, frequently in conjunction with chemical analysis of cyst fluid and cytologic evaluation. The purpose of these diagnostic tests is to distinguish benign from malignant cysts of the pancreas. Accordingly, it is imperative to distinguish pancreatic pseudocysts from their mimics. In this study, the authors explored the cytomorphologic features of pseudocyst of the pancreas and evaluated the role of Alcian blue and mucicarmine stains in the cytologic evaluation of pancreatic cysts.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most frequent inherited nephropathy. The development and enlargement of cysts in ADPKD requires tubular cell proliferation, abnormalities in the extracellular matrix and transepithelial fluid secretion. Multiple studies have suggested that fluid secretion across ADPKD cyst-lining cells is driven by the transepithelial secretion of chloride, mediated by the apical CFTR channel and specific basolateral transporters. The whole secretory process is stimulated by increased levels of cAMP in the cells, probably reflecting modifications in t
