Behavioral symptoms and psychiatric diagnoses among 162 children in nonalcoholic or alcoholic families.

OBJECTIVE: People with alcoholic relatives have high rates of alcohol abuse and dependence as adults, but their patterns of problems earlier in life are less clear. Many studies have not controlled for parental disorders other than alcoholism or for parents' socioeconomic status and general life functioning. The authors' goal was to conduct a study controlling for such factors. METHOD: Personal structured interviews and a behavioral checklist were administered to the parents of 162 children 7 years old or older whose fathers had participated in the 15-year follow-up of 453 sons of alcoholics

[Cannabis: Use and dependence].

The main characteristics of cannabis dependence are craving, persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control cannabis use and important social, occupational, or recreational activities given up or reduced because of cannabis use. Withdrawal symptoms include insomnia, irritability, anger, restlessness, depression, mood swings and cravings. Regular cannabis use induces cognitive impairment, especially of attention, episodic memory and working memory. Alcohol and other substances abuse or dependence are frequently found in patients with cannabis dependence. Psychiatric comorbidit

Dissociative Identity Disorder CPAP Adherence: An Uncommon Factor in Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

We present a case of a patient with dissociative identity disorder and symptomatic sleep apnea who was treated with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). CPAP use depended upon which personality the patient exhibited but apnea reduction did not. This case illustrates in one individual how personality can positively or negatively affect CPAP adherence.

The structure of common mental disorders: a replication study in a community sample of adolescents and young adults.

Previous research suggests that patterns of comorbidity of common mental disorders among adults are best reflected by a hierarchical three-factor structure with two correlated factors ('anxious-misery' and 'fear') summarized in a second-order 'internalizing' factor and one 'externalizing' factor. This three-factor structure has not been examined yet in a sample of adolescents and young adults.A representative sample of 3021 adolescents and young adults (baseline age 14-24) were prospectively followed over 10 years. Mental disorders were assessed according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manu

A pilot study examining the relationship between chronic heroin use and telomere length among individuals of African ancestry.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has suggested a possible link between heroin use and shortened telomere length (TL), a marker of cellular aging and genomic stability. We sought to replicate these findings by examining the relationship between TL and heroin use among individuals of African ancestry. METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined TL among 57 participants [17.5 % female; mean age 48.0 (±6.80) years] of African ancestry with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) and a mean heroin use duration of 18.2 (±10.7) years. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was used to calculate TL as the ratio

Sex-specific pathways among tri-allelic serotonin transporter polymorphism, trait neuroticism and generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Neuroticism personality trait is recognized as an important endophenotypic predictor of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Furthermore, endophenotype-based pathway approaches have recently been shown to have greater advantages for gene-finding strategies than traditional case-control studies. In the present study, in addition to conventional case-control methods, we used pathway analyses to test whether the tri-allelic serotonin transporter promoter polymorphism (combining 5-HTTLPR and rs25531) is associated with risk of GAD through its effects on trait neuroticism. METHODS: We i

Sodium oxybate: a review of its use in alcohol withdrawal syndrome and in the maintenance of abstinence in alcohol dependence.

A liquid formulation of sodium oxybate (Alcover(®)), the sodium salt of γ-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB), is approved in Italy and Austria for use in alcohol withdrawal syndrome and for the maintenance of abstinence in alcohol dependence. This article reviews the efficacy and tolerability of sodium oxybate in alcohol withdrawal syndrome and in the maintenance of abstinence in alcohol dependence, as well as summarizing its pharmacological properties. Results of randomized controlled trials indicate that sodium oxybate was at least as effective as diazepam and clomethiazole in patients with alcohol w

The use of divalproex in alcohol relapse prevention: a pilot study.

Anticonvulsant agents show promise in the treatment of the acute symptoms of alcohol withdrawal and may also treat some symptoms associated with the protracted abstinence syndrome. Impulsivity, hostility and irritability are common characteristics of alcohol-dependent individuals, and there is some evidence that anticonvulsant agents decrease these traits in individuals with a number of different psychiatric disorders. This pilot study is a 12-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of an anticonvulsant agent, divalproex (DVPX), in alcohol-dependent individuals. Alcohol use (Timeline Foll

Psychopathology in children of parents with opiate dependence and/or major depression.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate psychiatric disorders and impairment in school-age and adolescent children of opiate-dependent patients. METHOD: One hundred fourteen children, aged 6 to 17 years, of 69 white methadone maintenance patients with (n = 30) and without (n = 39) major depression were evaluated for DSM-III-R diagnoses by the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children-Epidemiologic version and best estimate, and by measures of functioning (Children's Global Assessment Scale, Social Adjustment Inventory for Children and Adolescents, WISC, Peabody Picture Vocabul

[Caregiver burden in patients with Parkinson's disease].

Parkinson patients suffering from disease progression become increasingly dependent on personal care, which is mostly provided by female family members. Burden of care correlates with severity of motor impairment, neurocognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms, behavioral abnormalities, autonomic nervous system disorders, impairment of micturition, sleep, and dependence. Caregiver burden also results from restrictions in time for personal matters, family, leisure and social activities, occupational limits, costs, lack of social support and impairment of sleep, depression, and emotional and other

Sex ratios and the risks of haematological malignancies.

Eating Disorders are very widespread within the adolescent population. A possible interpretation and the comprehension of such forms of psychopathology may revolve around the failure to develop a well-defined personal identity, an incapacity to achieve a sense of differentiation with respect to others, an incapacity to measure oneself against others, dependence on others, the fear of rejection and a sense of inadequacy. This study explores the relational styles and behaviour of individuals suffering from eating disorders and their influence on the development of the personality, with reference

Psychopathic heroin addicts are not uniformly impaired across neurocognitive domains of impulsivity.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is a hallmark characteristic of drug addiction and a prominent feature of externalizing disorders such as psychopathy that are commonly comorbid with drug addiction. In a previous study (Vassileva et al., 2007) we have shown that psychopathic heroin addicts evidence more impulsive decision-making on the Iowa Gambling Task relative to non-psychopathic heroin addicts. The goal of the current study was to investigate whether the observed impulse-control deficits in psychopathic heroin addicts would generalize to other neurocognitive domains of impulsivity, such as delay di

Personality disorder diagnostic thresholds correspond to different levels of latent pathology.

To meet a diagnosis for a particular personality disorder (PD), among other requirements, a person must exhibit a specified minimum number of the features outlined for that PD, otherwise referred to as the diagnostic threshold. Despite many years of research on the DSM PDs, there is little empirical basis for the chosen thresholds. The present study used mechanisms of item response theory (IRT) to link the diagnostic thresholds of six PDs to their corresponding level of latent PD pathology. Consistent with our hypothesis, analyses of the data from 41,227 participants revealed that PD diagnosti

Argyrophilic grain disease presenting with frontotemporal dementia: a neuropsychological and pathological study of an autopsied case with presenile onset.

A right-handed Japanese man with no consanguinity exhibited personality changes, speech disorder and abnormal behaviors, such as stereotypical, running-away, environment-dependent, and going-my-way behaviors, since the age of 49 years. At age 52 years, neuropsychological examination revealed frontal lobe dysfunctions, mild memory impairment, and transcortical sensory aphasia. MRI showed symmetrical severe atrophy of the anterior part of the temporal and frontal lobes. The clinical diagnosis was FTD. He died at age 54 years after a clinical illness of approximately 5 years. Numerous argyrophili

Personality Disorders in Patients with Idiopathic Generalized Epilepsy- An Underrecognized Comorbidity.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Personality disorders remain an illness in the shadows, with scarce literature on their prevalence in persons with epilepsy. Moreover, personality traits in idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) have not been explored so far, except for a few authors investigating juvenile myoclonic variant alone. We aimed to explore the prevalence and types of personality traits in persons with all IGE subtypes in adults and to compare them with the general population. METHOD: We included 57 healthy controls and 57 IGE cases who were diagnosed according to the International League

Differences in Early Maladaptive Schemas in a Sample of Alcohol and Opioid Dependent Women: Do Schemas Vary Across Disorders?

Research suggests that there may be differences between individuals diagnosed with alcohol dependence and individuals diagnosed with opioid dependence on co-morbid mental health problems (e.g., personality disorders, mood disorders, etc.). The current study examined whether there were differences in early maladaptive schemas, which are theorized to underlie mental health problems, among women diagnosed with alcohol dependence or opioid dependence who were seeking treatment for their substance use (N = 420). Results showed that opioid dependent women scored higher on 2 of the 18 early maladapti

Psychiatric Comorbidity, Psychosocial Problems, and Functioning of People Who Inject Opioids: An Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Injecting drug use (IDU) is a growing concern in India. This problem may coexist with other psychiatric disorders. The psychiatric comorbidity in IDUrs affects the psychosocial functioning of this population. This study aimed to assess psychiatric comorbidities, psychosocial problems, and global functioning of people who inject opioids. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included opioid-dependent individuals with a history of injecting opioids who visited an outpatient clinic for buprenorphine maintenance treatment. The patients were assessed by SCID-I and SCID-II for Axis-I and

Toward DSM-V: an item response theory analysis of the diagnostic process for DSM-IV alcohol abuse and dependence in adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Item response theory analyses were used to examine alcohol abuse and dependence symptoms and diagnoses in adolescents. Previous research suggests that the DSM-IV alcohol use disorder (AUD) symptoms in adolescents may be characterized by a single dimension. The present study extends prior research with a larger and more comprehensive sample and an examination of an alternative diagnostic algorithm for AUDs. METHOD: Approximately 5,587 adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18 years from adjudicated, clinical, and community samples were administered structured clinical interviews. An
