An atopic patient with tinea unguium, immediate hypersensitivity to Trichophyton, and elevated specific IgE antibody to Trichophyton had recalcitrant hand and foot eczema that resolved following the administration of systemic antifungal therapy for her tinea unguium. The patient fulfills criteria for the atopic-chronic-dermatophytosis syndrome described by Jones. The authors suggest that the patient's atopic dermatitis may have been exacerbated by her chronic dermatophyte infection and Trichophyton hypersensitivity.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin, frequently associated with a family history of atopy, raised serum IgE levels and other immunological abnormalities. Both eosinophils and their basic proteins have been detected in the skin lesions of AD patients. We measured the levels of eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) in sera of 24 children with AD and found them to be increased, compared to nonatopic controls, both children and adults. High ECP values were also obtained in 3 patients with the hyper-IgE syndrome. However, no direct relationship between IgE and ECP serum

Some 30-50% of cases of atopic dermatitis (AD) are believed to be associated with autosomal dominant ichthyosis vulgaris (ADI). The diagnosis of ADI can be proved by the ultrastructural demonstration of fewer and abnormal keratohyalin (KH) granules in all ADI patients, even in clinically unaffected skin. To prove the suggested frequent association of ADI with AD, an ultrastructural investigation of dry skin of 49 AD patients was performed. Only in 2 (4%) patients ADI could be confirmed by electron microscopy. In 17 patients, including the 2 patients with abnormal KH, hyperlinear palms were cli

Various aspects of eczema herpeticum are discussed, and a case of eczema herpeticum secondary to atopic dermatitis complicated by primary herpetic gingivostomatitis in a young adult is presented. The lesions cleared, and the patient was discharged after treatment via a multiphasic approach directed at the management of pyrexia, prevention of secondary bacterial infections, symptomatic and supportive care for the effects of the viral infection, and close monitoring for evidence of visceral viremia.

A 22-year-old white woman with Job's syndrome was found to have atopic dermatitis and impaired neutrophil chemotaxis in vitro. Major clinical features of Job's syndrome included large, "cold" and recurrent staphylococcal abscesses, and intermittent bacterial and yeast infections. Evidence for atopic disease included infantile eczema progressing to flexural dermatitis, a family history of atopy, positive immediate hypersensitivity skin tests, and hyperimmunoglobulinemia E. Defective erythema responses to histamine, methyl niacinate, and methacholine (Mecholyl) chloride may explain the lack of r

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is associated with skin-barrier disruption, immune dysregulation, and application of emollients and topical medications that might predispose a person toward developing allergic contact dermatitis.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the predictors of allergic contact dermatitis and relevant allergens in AD.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed for 502 adults (age ≥18 years) who were patch tested to an expanded allergen series during 2014-2017.
RESULTS: Overall, 108 (21.5%) had current AD and 109 (21.7%) had past AD. Patients with and without current AD

Atopic dermatitis is the most common chronic inflammatory disease among children in industrialised countries. Many factors influence this disease in a negative way and contact allergy is one such factor. The aim of the study was to examine the frequency of contact allergy among children with the diagnosis atopic dermatitis. Contact allergy was found in 22/82 children (26.8%), the most common from Amerchol L101 (11.0%), potassium dichromate (7.3%), and nickel sulfate (4.9%). A statistically significant difference in contact allergy frequency was demonstrated for those with hand and/or foot ecze

Topical corticosteroids (TCS) remain the first-line treatment for (AD). This narrative review examines clinical data on the immunomodulatory effects of TCS and recent treatments for atopic dermatitis (AD) in early childhood in the context of atopic comorbidities. While TCS are effective in reducing several markers of inflammation in infants with AD, certain type 2 cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)−4, IL-5, and IL-13, remain uncontrolled in the infant stratum corneum, a major source of dysregulated systemic cytokines. A pathomechanism known as remote priming has been identified, wherein aller

Dupilumab inhibits the signaling pathway of interleukins 4 and 13, and can be effective in the management of treatment-refractory atopic dermatitis, with alopecia areata being uncommonly reported as a side effect and only limited to several cases. This is the case of a patient who experienced dupilumab-induced alopecia in treatment for atopic dermatitis and whose histological exam represented findings distinct from classical alopecia areata, telogen effluvium, or underlying psoriatic alopecia, with a potential explanation being inhibition of the Th2 pathway, enhancing a Th1-mediating response

Atopic dermatitis is an inflammatory skin condition that largely affects children. Atopic dermatitis has the potential to persist into adulthood and continue to negatively affect the lives of those who are burdened with it. This condition can have a large impact on the quality of life of those who are affected from birth through senescence. Scoring systems have been developed over time to help assess the impact that AD has on an individual's quality of life. The goal of this article is to create an overview of the quality of life scores by age group and across nationalities.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder marked by immune dysregulation, epidermal barrier dysfunction, microbiome imbalance, pruritus, and xerosis. Despite therapeutic advances, topical treatments remain the foundation of AD management across all severities. However, most existing topicals address only limited aspects of the disease such as itch or inflammation, resulting in frequent relapse and patient dissatisfaction.
METHODS: A focused literature review of topical AD therapies published between January 2015 and July 2025 was conducted, emphasizing efficac

Eczema molluscatum refers to widespread molluscum contagiosum (MC) infection occurring in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD), a setting in which impaired skin barrier function and immune dysregulation both promote viral spread. We report the case of a 29-year-old man with longstanding, treatment-refractory AD who was well controlled on upadacitinib, a selective Janus kinase 1 (JAK1) inhibitor, and methotrexate when he developed multiple pink, dome-shaped papules with central umbilication across the cheeks and forehead over a six-month period. The lesions were unresponsive to topical clindamy

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a highly prevalent, chronic inflammatory skin disease that predominantly begins in early childhood. Increasing evidence supports that pediatric AD is not a single entity, but rather a spectrum of overlapping phenotypes and endotypes, defined by clinical presentation, immune profile, genetics, ethnicity, and comorbid atopic conditions. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of current knowledge on childhood AD heterogeneity, emphasizing severity, age of onset, allergen sensitization, allergic comorbidities, ethnicity, and disease trajectory. Atopic dermatitis is the most common chronically or chronically relapsing inflammatory skin disease, characterized by intense pruritus, eczematous lesions, and a significant disease burden. Emerging evidence in recent years suggests that atopic dermatitis and the associated chronic systemic inflammation have health implications beyond the skin. For psoriasis, another chronic inflammatory skin disease, the association with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) is well-established. Recent studies have demonstrated a similar association between atopic dermatitis and CVDs such as hypertension, atheroscle

Psoriasis and atopic dermatitis are among the most frequent chronic, inflammatory skin diseases of childhood and adolescence. Regarding profound consequences for the physical and psychosocial development of affected patients, a timely and individually adapted therapy has to be initiated, in case of severe disease systemic treatment. Modern, targeted, highly efficient and well-tolerated agents are currently available. Overlapping psoriasis and atopic dermatitis have been appreciated recently, both idiopathic and therapeutically induced. Their prevention or early detection is mandatory for optim
