New causes of occupational allergic contact dermatitis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Occupational allergic contact dermatitis (OACD) is an important work-related skin disease. Information about the causative agents comes from many sources, including patch test databases, registries, case series and case reports. This review summarizes new information about common causative allergens and diagnosis. RECENT FINDINGS: Common causes of OACD include rubber components, epoxies and preservatives. New exposure sources for these allergens continue to be described. Often these exposure sources are related to the changing world around us, such as allergens related to s

Allergic contact dermatitis to topical medicaments: Revisited.

BACKGROUND: Allergic reaction to topical drugs varies depending on use and availability of topical drugs and self-medication. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine the incidence of contact dermatitis to topical medicaments among patients referred for patch testing. METHODS: All patients with suspected allergic contact dermatitis were patch tested with standard and medicament series. The characterization was performed according to the MOAHLFA index. RESULTS: 59/215 (27.4%) patients had positive reactions to at least 1 medicament but only 13/59 (22.0%) had a relevant history. The 3 most common pos

Bifocal contact dermatitis following a temporary tattoo.

Allergic contact dermatitis from henna tattoos is often caused by PPD. This was a 35-year-old female patient with eczema lesions of the left forearm that occurred after henna's tattoo. The inner side of the left thigh, although not tattooed, was the site of eczema lesions, reproducing the design of the tattoo.

Topical eye medications causing allergic contact dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) in the eye region caused by topical eye medications is difficult to diagnose and may be overlooked. OBJECTIVE: To study the characteristics and causative agents in patients with ACD caused by topical eye medications in a Danish tertiary dermatology department. METHODS: A retrospective study of 318 patients, patch tested between 2013 and 2021 due to suspected ACD to topical eye medications. All patients were tested with a locally developed eye medication series, some were additionally tested with suspected eye medications. Medical records were stu

Systemic contact dermatitis following oral neomycin therapy.

Systemic contact dermatitis (SCD) describes a hypersensitivity skin reaction following systemic re-exposure of an allergen in previously sensitized patients. Neomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that, when taken orally, suppresses intestinal bacteria and is used in preoperative bowel surgery to reduce the risk of infection. While oral neomycin has been commonly associated with adverse reactions like nausea, vomiting, and Clostridium difficile-associated colitis, the poor intestinal absorption of oral neomycin makes systemic contact dermatitis an unusual adverse reaction. Herein we present

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis from systemic drugs.

BACKGROUND: Health-care workers (HCWs) and professionals working in the pharmaceutical industry are at risk of developing occupational allergic contact dermatitis (OACD) from systemic drugs (or drug intermediates). OBJECTIVES: To study demographic characteristics and identify systemic drugs responsible for OACD in patients investigated for contact allergy during the period 2001-2019. METHODS: In the study period, 9780 patients were patch tested with the European baseline series, sometimes with additional series, and other relevant potential allergens. All patients with a positive patch-test

Occupational Airborne Contact Dermatitis Caused by Omeprazole.

Airborne contact dermatitis (ACD) is a frequent condition, and there has been increasing recognition of the occupational origin of airborne contact dermatitis. ACD caused by drugs is often occupation-related and occurs mainly in healthcare workers who use the drugs for therapeutic aims and employees of pharmaceutical industries involved in the production of the drugs (1). Omeprazole (OM) is a proton pump inhibitor from the benzimidazole group used for treatment of gastric acid-related disorders (2). A 52-years-old female chemist had been working in a pharmaceutical company for 20 years. When w

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis caused by colophonium.

BACKGROUND: Colophonium is a common contact allergen that is present not only in household products but also in occupational settings. OBJECTIVES: To describe the sources of occupational exposure to colophonium and the occupations at risk of colophonium allergy. METHODS: We reviewed patch test files from the years 2002 to 2017 at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health for patients with allergic reactions to colophonium and abietic acid. We analysed the patch test, occupation and exposure data of 39 patients diagnosed with occupational allergic contact dermatitis (OACD) caused by coloph
