The case of a 8 years old girl, who since the delivery had suffered from a generalized, erythematous and scaling eruption of the skin is reported. She also had a sparse, short and brittle hair. Abnormalities such as trichorrhexis nodosa and pilo torti were observed. The finding of a generalized increase of the urinary aminoacids, excretion especially for Glycine and Serine, is added to this features.

Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is the most prevalent autoimmune blistering skin disease in the Western world affecting mainly the elderly population. The diagnosis is based on clinical assessment along with specific immunopathologic findings on skin biopsy. Risk factors include genetic factors, environmental exposures, and several infections including hepatitis B, hepatitis C, Helicobacter pylori, Toxoplasma gondi, and cytomegalovirus. A variety of drugs have been associated with BP including but not limited to dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors, loop diuretics, spironolactone, and neuroleptics. Assoc

Drug-induced cutaneous reactions encompass a wide variety of rashes that depend in part on route of administration (e.g., contact versus systemic) as well as type of cutaneous response and molecular mechanism underlying the reaction. One such reaction is a type IV immunologic reaction (delayed hypersensitivity) manifest as contact dermatitis and commonly elicited by drugs such as antihistamines, antibiotic ointments, local anesthetics, and paraben esters in cosmetic creams and lotions. A generalized eruption of this sort will occasionally occur with systemic administration of a drug to someone

A tree surgeon presented to hospital with multiple blackening, non-blanching regions of skin on both forearms, following exposure to sap from the 'tree of heaven' (Ailanthus altissima). A referral to plastic surgery was made to consider debridement. Following input from the national poisons centre and dermatology, conservative management with emollient was undertaken. The lesions blistered and exfoliated and were treated with topical steroid and oral antihistamines. Resolving erythema was the only symptom at three weeks. A. altissima, also known as the 'tree of heaven' has known toxins in its

A 66-year-old woman with a 6-month history of new-onset psoriasis after her first dose of COVID-19 vaccination recently progressed to acute erythroderma accompanied by fever and systemic inflammation. She was started on secukinumab for erythrodermic psoriasis (EP) after conventional therapies were contraindicated. On hospital day 6, her condition deteriorated with dyspnea, high fever, and edema. Laboratory evaluation revealed severe hypoalbuminemia and elevated inflammatory cytokines, with no evidence of infection. Imaging studies showed pulmonary edema and massive pleural effusions requiring

Psoriasis hospitalisation is not frequently reported. The objective of this study was to determine (1) the clinical, laboratory and treatment features of patients with psoriasis hospitalised due to flare-up and (2) other causes of admission of patients with psoriasis. We retrospectively reviewed data on 48 patients admitted due to psoriasis flare-up and 1908 patients with psoriasis admitted due to concomitant illnesses or comorbidities. The study period was 2005-2021. The latter group was compared with 821,804 patients without psoriasis admitted during the period. Of the 48 cases, 37.5% had er

Erythroderma is a rare clinical entity characterized by generalized erythema affecting the whole or most of the body's skin surface. It is associated with a variety of underlying conditions, including preexisting dermatoses, infections, connective tissue disorders, drugs, malignancies, or it may be idiopathic. A case of a 73-year-old man, with a 5-month history of erythroderma, eventually diagnosed with small cell lung cancer is presented. This is the first reported case indicating an association between erythroderma and small cell lung cancer, extending, thus, current knowledge regarding smal

We report on 7 patients with chronic alcohol abuse and ichthyosiform erythroderma. Dry skin (i.e. xerosis cutis) was a striking common feature in all patients who did not present any signs of fluid depletion. Two patients had exclusively exsiccational dermatitis; three had atopic disposition and one nummular eczema of the legs. In another patient a drug allergy could be demonstrated. Xerosis cutis seems to be an important precipitating aetiologic factor for erythroderma, and may be a consequence of alcohol-induced diuresis. All patients recovered rapidly under topical treatment with emollients

Mast cell disease or mastocytosis is a heterogeneous group of clinical disorders characterized by the proliferation and accumulation of mast cells in a variety of tissues, most often the skin. The signs and symptoms of mast cell disease are varied, dependent on the localization of mast cells in different organs and the local and systemic effects of mediators released from these cells. Although mast cell disease is most commonly identified in the skin, involvement of the skeletal, hematopoietic, gastrointestinal, cardiopulmonary, and central nervous systems may be seen. Clinical management of m

Genetic skin diseases are usually thought of as stable phenotypes caused by a mutant gene. However, a review of the literature on genodermatoses and my personal experience with a number of these disorders show that the concept of a stable phenotype is not always true. A number of genodermatoses actually show a regression of symptoms. Among these are monilethrix, several types of erythrokeratoderma, several forms of palmoplantar keratoderma such as the varians Wachters type and the Richner-Hanhart syndrome, and some forms of epidermolysis bullosa, for example the Dowling-Meara type. Three diffe
