Positive patch-test reactions to mixed dialkyl thioureas: cross-sectional data from the North American Contact Dermatitis Group, 1994 to 2004.

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis from thioureas is uncommon but may result from exposure to rubber, especially neoprene. OBJECTIVES: To (1) describe the population with positive patch-test reactions to mixed dialkyl thioureas (MDTU) (ie, diethylthiourea and dibutylthiourea); (2) determine clinical and occupational relevance associated with reactions to MDTU and identify the most commonly related sources and occupations; and (3) examine the frequency of co-reacting allergens in MDTU-positive patients. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of cross-sectional data of 22,025 patients patch-te

Occupational dermatoses in a plant producing binders for paints and glues.

A survey of occupational dermatoses, based on a questionnaire, clinical examination and patch testing, was carried out among present and former employees in a plant producing binders for glues and paints. The binders are chemically based on vinyl acetate and/or acrylates. Preservatives are needed and those based on methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone (MCI/MI) are the most commonly used. The questionnaire was answered by 83 out of 85 present employees (97.6%) and 12 out of 15 former employees (80.0%). 76 of the present (89.4%) and 11 of the former employees (73.3%), respectively,

Occupational respiratory and dermatologic disease.

Many diseases caused by occupational exposures may have an allergic or immunopathogenetic basis. These include asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, the pulmonary disease-anemia syndrome, allergic contact dermatitis, and contact urticaria. This article discusses concepts important to the understanding of occupational forms of these diseases and provides approaches to their diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

Occupational skin dermatoses among health care workers: A review of adverse skin reactions to personal protective equipment.

Occupational skin-related problems include dermatoses caused by agents in the working environment. For health care workers, these occupational dermatoses could be due to usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as gloves, masks, goggles, and other protective equipment. These PPE contribute to both allergic and irritant contact dermatitis. This review summarized the skin damage after PPE usage and hand hygiene protocol. Recommendations should be established to prevent these occupational dermatoses from PPE usage.

Occupationally Related Nickel Reactions: A Retrospective Analysis of the North American Contact Dermatitis Group Data 1998-2016.

BACKGROUND: The epidemiology of nickel allergy in occupational settings is not well understood. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to characterize occupationally related nickel allergy (ORNA). METHODS: This is a retrospective cross-sectional analysis of 44,378 patients patch tested by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group from 1998 to 2016. Characteristics of individuals with ORNA were compared with those with non-ORNA (NORNA). RESULTS: A total of 7928 (18.2%) individuals were positive to nickel sulfate 2.5%. Two hundred sixty-eight (3.4%) had ORNA. As compared with NORNA, ORNA was s

[Strengthen the prevention of occupational trichloroethylene health hazards].

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a widely used organic solvent and an important industrial material. It can be absorbed into the body through respiratory tract and skin, and cause occupational hazards. The acute hazard induced by TCE is occupational medicamentosa-like dermatitis. Epidemiological data showed that long-term occupational exposure to TCE could also increase the risk of cancer and cause damage to reproductive system and nervous system. Thus, it is of great significance to strengthen the prevention of occupational TCE health hazards. In this paper, the health hazards and preventive measur

[Contact allergies in the German workforce : Data of the IVDK network from 2003-2013].

BACKGROUND: In Germany, occupational skin diseases rank first in the occupational skin disease statistics for many years. Especially, occupationally acquired contact allergies as well as multi-sensitization are the most important predictors for a poor prognosis and persistent eczema. OBJECTIVES: To update the spectrum and sensitization frequencies of most frequent allergens from the standard series in Germany in patients with occupationally acquired type IV sensitizations in general and within different occupational groups. METHODS: Data of all employed patients (age range: 16-68 years, n =

Frequency of standard and occupational contact allergens in Tuzla area, Bosnia and Herzegovina: retrospective study.

Allergic contact dermatitis is acute or chronic inflammatory skin disease of allergic etiology, which develops as a result of delayed type of hypersensitivity, i.e. type IV reaction according to the Gell and Coombs classification. In the retrospective study, we reviewed medical records of 495 patients diagnosed with allergic contact dermatitis in the 1988-1998 period. The records were obtained from the Cabinet of Allergology of the Department of Dermatology and Venerology, Tuzla University Hospital Center. There were 312 women and 183 men, aged between 18 and 60 years. The patients were divide

Irritant contact dermatitis: beyond a diagnosis of exclusion.

Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) is the most common form of contact dermatitis and a leading cause of occupational skin disease, but remains underrecognized relative to allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Direct chemical or physical injury to the epidermal barrier causes ICD, which can develop in anyone when exposure intensity or duration exceeds the skin's repair capacity. ICD is increasingly understood to involve more than barrier disruption: it is an innate immune-mediated inflammatory disorder involving keratinocyte-derived cytokines, neutrophil recruitment, C-C motif chemokine ligand 2-C-

Relevance of multiparametric skin bioengineering in a prospectively-followed cohort of junior hairdressers.

There is conflicting evidence concerning predictors of individual susceptibility to develop irritant contact dermatitis in wet work. A cohort of initially 92 hairdresser apprentices was prospectively followed for 3 years. The association between anamnestic and clinical findings, and multiparametric skin bioengineering data (transepidermal water loss [TEWL], microcirculation, capacitance, pH, sebum, temperature) was investigated. The observation intervals were 3 months in the 1st year of training and 12 months thereafter. Of the 92 apprentices, 6 had already developed hand dermatitis on 1st exa

An Unusual Presentation of Pyemotes ventricosus Dermatitis Presenting With Umbilicated Papules Mimicking Poxvirus Infection.

Pyemotes ventricosus mites are an uncommon cause of pruritic dermatitis seen most commonly in occupational exposure, prominently found in professionals such as farmers, landscapers, and factory workers who work with grains, wheat, dried beans, or grasses. The clinical description of the rash has typically been described as papular, erythematous, with a central vesicular lesion. We describe a case of Pyemotes dermatitis with an atypical clinical presentation. A 30-year-old man presented with pruritic, umbilicated papules, which involved his right lateral trunk and upper thigh leading to the sub

Environmental airborne contact dermatoses.

This chapter is complementary to Chapter 4 published in the same series. Airborne contact dermatitis (ABCD) is considered a prototype in the field of environmental dermatology. It is often underestimated in most textbooks of general dermatology, despite its frequent occurrence in daily life. ABCD may be irritant, allergic, phototoxic, or photoallergic. Airborne contact urticaria is another example. A particular clinical aspect is the "head and neck dermatitis", which occurs in atopic adult patients. Occupational ABCD represents a most difficult issue in terms of diagnostic procedures. It is ob

Legislation on prevention of occupational dermatoses.

Legislation is one way to eliminate sensitizers and irritants. Purity requirements, declaration and labelling, industrial health codes and pre-employment occupational aptitude examinations are useful in combating occupational and contact dermatitis by drugs and products of daily use. Chromium compounds, turpentine, balsam of Peru, benzocaine and other can be eliminated by administration and legislation.

Contact reactions to food.

Cutaneous adverse reactions to foods, spices, and food additives can occur both in occupational and nonoccupational settings in those who grow, handle, prepare, or cook food. Because spices are also utilized in cosmetics and perfumes, other exposures are encountered that can result in adverse cutaneous reactions. This article describes the reaction patterns that can occur upon contact with foods, including irritant contact dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis. The ingestion of culprit foods by sensitized individuals can provoke a generalized eczematous rash, referred to as systemic conta

[History of the radiation damage in occupations].

In the year following Röntgen`s discovery of X-rays in 1895, approximately 60 cases of hand dermatitis and hair loss induced by radiation were reported. People using X-rays in their occupation, including X-ray tube manufacturers, physicians, and engineers, experienced chronic radiation dermatitis and were the first to be diagnosed with occupational radiation exposure. Reports of later appearing disorders, including skin cancer, suffered by doctors and engineers, were regarded as serious occupational diseases. In the 1910's, blood disorders, including leukemia, in people with occupational expos
