The capsule of Cryptococcus neoformans.

The capsule of Cryptococcus neoformans is its dominant virulence factor and plays a key role in the biology of this fungus. In this essay, w … l stimulation and cellular replication. In the environment, the capsule protects the fungus against desiccation and phagocytic predators. In animal hosts the capsule functions in both offensive and defensive modes, such that it interferes with immune responses while providing the fungal cell with a defensive shield that is both antiphagocytic and capable of a …

A hyaluronidase from Tityus serrulatus scorpion venom: isolation, characterization and inhibition by flavonoids.

The purification procedure of a hyaluronidase from Tityus serrulatus scorpion venom is described. It involves basically an ion-exchange chromatography on CM-cellulose at pH 7.8 followed by a rechromatography of the active fraction on the same column at pH 4.7. The optima pH and temperature for maximum activity of the isolated enzyme was 6.0 and 40 degrees C, respectively. Its K(M) was 69.7 microg/ml at 37 degrees C and its specific activity was 19,900+/-1,730 turbidity reducing units (TRU)/mg against 845+/-88TRU/mg for the whole desiccated venom, representing a 23- to 24-fold purification rang

Incidence of the concrete scalp deformity associated with deep scalp donor sites and management with the Unna cap.

The scalp has become a popular donor site for split-thickness skin grafts. This donor site does, however, have complications, including the concrete scalp deformity, which consists of hairs embedded in a thick, desiccated, exudative crust. This article presents our burn unit's experience with this complication. Fifty-six patients underwent scalp skin graft harvesting between 1984 and 1996. All grafts were quite thick and were used for resurfacing facial burns. Thirty-eight donor sites were treated with medicated gauze, and 18 were treated with the Unna cap, which is an Unna dressing applied ov

Reports of two cases of autoimmune thyroiditis while receiving anticonvulsant therapy.

Two cases, one a 15-year-old girl and the other a 12-year-old girl, with goitrous hypothyroidism associated with elevated anti-DNA and antithyroid antibodies are reported. Abnormalities were noticed 1 year and 3 months and 5 years after the start of anticonvulsant therapy in case 1 and case 2, respectively. Alternation of drug (Valproate from ethosuximide) in case 1 resulted in disappearance of the goitre, and the thyroid function tests became normal. The titers of the antithyroglobulin and the antimicrosomal antibodies were reduced (below 1:100) from 1:400 and 1:1600, respectively. Discontinu

THE BACTERIAL GROWTH INHIBITOR (LACTENIN) OF MILK : I. THE PREPARATION IN CONCENTRATED FORM.

The bacterial growth inhibitory substance found in milk is called lactenin in this paper. It is stable for 1(1/2) hours at pH 4 and at pH 10 and for longer periods in neutral solution. It is not associated with salts and carbohydrates and may be separated from them by dialysis. Lactenin is removed by agents which precipitate the proteins of whey. Part of these proteins may be hydrolyzed by tryptic digestion and the resulting split products, together with the salts and sugar, may then be removed by dialysis without appreciable loss of lactenic activity. This dialysis may be performed in a conce

Water is a preservative of microbes.

Water is the cellular milieu, drives all biochemistry within Earth's biosphere and facilitates microbe-mediated decay processes. Instead of reviewing these topics, the current article focuses on the activities of water as a preservative-its capacity to maintain the long-term integrity and viability of microbial cells-and identifies the mechanisms by which this occurs. Water provides for, and maintains, cellular structures; buffers against thermodynamic extremes, at various scales; can mitigate events that are traumatic to the cell membrane, such as desiccation-rehydration, freeze-thawing and t…

Mechanism and optimization of NaCl removal from soy sauce residue using low pressure superheated steam drying: Role of condensation and moisture migration.

Soy sauce residue (SSR), a high-salt byproduct of condiment production, poses environmental and valorization challenges due to its NaCl content. The high salinity hinders its direct utilization in applications such as animal feed or fertilizer. This study introduces low-pressure superheated steam drying (LPSSD) for simultaneous dehydration and desalination. NaCl removal was driven by condensation-induced dissolution and steam-flow convection, with moisture as the key carrier. LPSSD achieved a 34.8% NaCl reduction, significantly surpassing vacuum drying (p < 0.001). Condensation and multi-stage

Effect of freeze-thaw dehydration pretreatment and bacterial cellulose addition on 3D printing performance of whole potato flour complex gel as dysphagia diets.

In this study, whole potato flour (WP) was modified through freeze-thaw dehydration (FTD) and the incorporation of bacterial cellulose (BC) to enhance the 3D printability of its gel. The effects of FTD pretreatment and BC addition on 3D printing performance of whole potato flour complex gel were systematically investigated. The results demonstrated that FTD treatment led to an increase in the amylopectin content of whole potato flour gel, while BC addition enhanced the short-range order, relative crystallinity and aggregate structure of the starch. These effects synergistically improved the st

Integrated crystallization, drying, and particle engineering of ibuprofen microcrystals with enhanced flowability using percrystallization.

Crystallization, filtration, and drying remain key but limiting operations in Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) manufacturing. Membrane percrystallization (PerX) is a new approach that couples solvent removal and crystallization within a single unit operation. In this study, PerX was evaluated for ibuprofen crystallization under different feed concentrations and temperatures. The resulting solids were assessed in terms of throughput, solid-state quality, and particle attributes relevant to downstream handling. PerX achieved high crystallization yields (>95%) and fluxes up to 5.13 kg API m

High Voltage Electrostatic Field Pretreatment Combined With Infrared Hot Air Technique for Fresh-Cut Mango Slices: Drying Kinetics and Quality Evaluation.

This study aims to investigate the effects of high-voltage electrostatic field (HVEF) pretreatment combined with infrared hot-air drying (IR-HAD) on the drying kinetics and quality of fresh-cut mango slices. To systematically evaluate these effects, drying rate, moisture distribution, microstructure, color, texture, and bioactive components (vitamins B and C, total phenolics, and DPPH antioxidant activity) were measured. The results indicated that HVEF pretreatment reduced the resistance to moisture migration within the material. This effect is supported by enhanced cell membrane permeability

Impact of different hand-drying methods on surrounding environment: aerosolization of virus and bacteria, and transfer to surfaces.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, hand drying has been highlighted as a key step in appropriate hand hygiene, as moisture on hands can increase the transfer of micro-organisms from hands to surfaces and vice versa. AIM: To understand bacterial and viral aerosolization following hand drying, and study the transfer of micro-organisms from hands to surfaces after drying using different methods. METHODS: Groups of five volunteers had their hands pre-washed with soap, rinsed and dried, then inoculated with a concentrated mixture of Pseudomonas fluorescens and MS2 bacteriophage. Volunteers entered an e

Changes in Physicochemical Properties and Volatile Compounds of Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) Calyx during Different Drying Methods.

Fresh roselle are high in moisture and deteriorate easily, which makes drying important for extending shelf-life and increasing availability. This study investigated the influence of different drying methods (oven-drying, freeze-drying, vacuum-drying, and sun-drying) on the quality of roselle calyx expressed as physicochemical properties (moisture content, water activity, soluble solids, color), volatile compounds, and microstructure. Oven-drying and freeze-drying reduced moisture content most while vacuum-drying and sun-drying were not as efficient. All drying methods except sun-drying result

Utility of dried blood spot sampling and storage for increased stability of photosensitive compounds.

BACKGROUND: Compound stability remains a major point of concern within pharmaceutical development. In attempts to minimize degradation, scientists may utilize acidification of samples prior to storage, dark chambers, decreased freezer temperatures and a variety of other stabilization techniques. All of these steps require additional procedures, increased costs and increased validation steps. Dried blood spots (DBS) are becoming a popular alternative to plasma sampling in many small- and even large-molecule applications. An investigation was performed in order to establish if DBS would provide

Use of dewatered alum sludge as a substrate in reed bed treatment systems for wastewater treatment.

In this paper, two laboratory-scale simulated reed beds were investigated for the purpose of assessing the feasibility and effectiveness of using dewatered alum sludge as a possible substrate for wastewater treatment reed bed systems. One horizontal subsurface flow setup and one vertical flow setup were used. The horizontal flow system was planted with Phragmites australis while the vertical flow system was left unplanted. Thus, the latter was more akin to a sand filter system, but was examined with the potential use as a planted vertical reed bed system. The influent source used was farmyard

Furosemide-induced electrolyte depletion associated with echinocytosis in horses.

Echinocytes have been incriminated in the pathogenesis of exertional diseases in horses. To evaluate the hypothesis that echinocytes are dehydrated erythrocytes, we decreased blood sodium and potassium concentrations in 4 horses by administering furosemide (1.0 mg/kg of body weight, q 12 h) for 2 days and we monitored CBC, serum and erythrocyte sodium and potassium concentrations, and echinocyte numbers. Serum sodium concentration decreased progressively over the 48 hours of furosemide administration, then returned to near baseline concentration at 168 hours. A statistically significant decrea

Circumoval precipitin (COP) test using air-dried eggs of Schistosoma japonicum and S. mansoni.

In an attempt to establish a simplified circumoval precipitin (COP) test for the diagnostic purpose of schistosomiasis, air-dried eggs of both Schistosoma japonicum and S. mansoni were tested as antigens for this assay. Twenty-six sera from mice infected with S. japonicum showed positive COP reactions as assessed by air-dried eggs. Among 36 serum samples from patients with schistosomiasis japonica, five exhibited false negative reaction when assessed with air-dried eggs and showed a minimum level of COP reaction when assessed with lyophilized eggs. Similarly, all of 30 serum samples from jirds

Bdelloid rotifers harbor a voltage-gated proton channel with distinct mechanistic features.

Bdelloid rotifers are renowned for their extraordinary resilience. They can survive desiccation and long-term freezing and revive once favorable conditions return. Such remarkable survival abilities suggest that the evolution of specialized molecular adaptations sustain pH homeostasis under extreme environmental stress. In the present study, we identify and functionally characterize an isoform of the voltage-gated proton channel (Hv) from the bdelloid rotifer Adineta ricciae, which we name ArHv2. Unlike its paralog ArHv1 and human Hv1 that activate only at positive membrane potentials and cont…
