Use and Perception of Video Consultations Among Swedish Dietitians Before and After COVID-19 Onset.

INTRODUCTION: The implementation of telehealth began globally before the onset of COVID-19 but the use of telehealth, particularly video consultations (VCs), is expected to have increased with pandemic restrictions on face-to-face consultations (FTFCs). However, little is known about its actual usage. In Sweden, VCs have the potential to bridge long distances between Registered Dietitians (RDs) and their patients. This study investigates the use and perceptions of VCs among Swedish RDs before and after the onset of COVID-19. METHODS: Swedish RDs were invited to participate in web-based survey

Do the nutrition qualifications and professional practices of registered exercise professionals align?

Australia has approximately 26,000 registered exercise professionals (REP), in comparison with 3,379 accredited practicing dietitians (APD). The REP workforce has the potential to reach more than 10% of the Australian population but there is limited data on their educational background and professional behaviors with regards to nutritional counseling of clients. The purpose of this research was to determine if REPs are working within their scope of practice and if their qualifications align with their practice, specifically as it relates to nutrition advice. Using a cross sectional descriptive

Medical nutrition therapy provided to adult hematopoietic stem cell transplantation patients.

This study explored the current medical nutrition therapy (MNT) provided to adult patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and examined the current and desired role of registered dietitians (RDs) in providing MNT. A total of 60 RDs (57% response rate) responded to an electronic questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and χ(2) analyses (SPSS; version 18) were used. Results revealed the primary form of diet was oral, and for patients on nutrition support, parenteral nutrition (PN) was used more frequently (16%-31%) than enteral nutrition (EN) (5%-9%; P ≤ .05). Nutrition s

School-based "Shokuiku" program in Japan: application to nutrition education in Asian countries.

This paper provides the overview of "Shokuiku" in Japan, and discusses the future perspective on application of its concepts to nutrition education in other Asian countries. In Japan, there has been a growing concern on increase of obesity and the metabolic syndrome among middle-aged men. Additionally, child obesity has also become one of the important health problems. The increased obesity among them is possibly associated with inappropriate dietary habits (eg skipping breakfast, excessive fat intake and insufficient vegetable). Under this circumstance, the "Basic Law on Shokuiku" was enacted

Trendy, but Are They Safe? Current Popular Diets and Their Use in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: Narrative Review.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) arises from the interplay between genetic susceptibility, immune dysregulation, microbiota, and environmental exposures, with diet potentially contributing to both pathogenesis and management. Patients frequently modify their diet independently, often using different strategies during remission and active symptoms. This narrative review synthesises evidence on patient-accessible dietary patterns and selected structured nutritional therapies across five domains: incident IBD, objective intestinal inflammation, gastrointestinal symptoms and quality of life, nutri

When the Algorithm Becomes the Dietitian: Large Language Model Hallucinations, Algorithmic Food Environments, and the Erosion of Nutritional Autonomy.

Large language models (LLMs) can answer dietary questions, but their use as substitutes for registered dietitians remains insufficiently quantified. Evaluations have identified inaccurate nutrient targets, incomplete clinical advice, and insufficient personalization, alongside useful performance on some general nutrition tasks. Social media and food-delivery interfaces may also influence dietary choices through food cues, social endorsement, and choice architecture. This conceptual perspective presents ADRIFT (Algorithmic Dietary Reconfiguration through Informational, Framing, and Technologica

From evidence to action: advancing multi-level policy and leadership for adult undernutrition.

BACKGROUND: The Canadian Nutrition Society endorsed commitments aligned with the United Nations Decade of Action on Nutrition to advance policy action for adult undernutrition. Currently, undernutrition is not recognized as a condition impacting the Canadian health care system. The aim was to identify key insights and ongoing policy challenges and outline actionable steps for health leaders and governments to prioritize nutrition care amid shifting priorities. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Evidence was integrated from a targeted undernutrition initiative, and findings were synthesized to develop a

Phenotype profiling of disease-related malnutrition with inflammation: Document elaborated by the ESPEN special interest group (SIG) ''cachexia-anorexia in chronic wasting diseases''.

In the ESPEN SIG meetings the similarities and differences between cachexia and disease-related malnutrition (DRM) were previously analyzed, as well as the role of inflammation in DRM. In the years 2023-2025, the SIG moving forward emphasized the relevance of the evolution of the cachexia definition and the advantage of considering DRM with chronic inflammation and cachexia as synonyms. We focused on the evidence regarding: i) the impact of DRM phenotypes and grade of inflammation on the efficacy of nutritional treatments, ii) the distinction between cachexia and end-of-life conditions, and ii

Dietary approaches in functional bowel disorders.

Functional bowel disorders, classified as disorders of gut-brain interaction, are highly prevalent and characterized by chronic gastrointestinal symptoms in the absence of identifiable structural abnormalities. The pathophysiology of these disorders is multifactorial. Given this complexity, a symptom-directed treatment approach is essential. As the majority of these patients report food-related symptoms, first-line therapy typically involves the implementation of general dietary and lifestyle advice, as recommended by the British Dietetic Association's (BDA) evidence-based guidelines and U.K's

'Fear of threats': a mixed-method study among Malaysian women with gestational diabetes mellitus.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common medical condition during pregnancy and is linked to short- and long-term complications for both mothers and offspring. However, there is limited information regarding poor glycaemic control in Malaysia. This study aims to determine the predictors of poor glycaemic control among women with GDM and to explore women's perceptions and experiences in self-managing glycaemic control. An explanatory sequential mixed methods study was conducted among women with GDM in Northern Terengganu. A proportional-to-size stratified sampling method was used in quan

Assessing the Level of Knowledge, Implementation Practices, and Use of Digital Applications for the Optimal Adoption of the Nutrition Care Process in Greece.

The level of NCP implementation varies across countries due to differences identified in major components of health systems such as infrastructures, legislation, training, and cultural diversities. Dietitians in Greece receive sufficient training in the implementation of the NCP as part of their main studies; however, the level of awareness and adoption of the NCP model is still quite low, with limited information on the potential barriers. The primary aim of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the perspectives of Greek dietitians on the NCP and the use of digital tools. An online

A Smart Monitoring System for Self-Nutrition Management in Pediatric Patients with Inherited Metabolic Disorders: Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD).

A metabolic disorder is due to a gene mutation that causes an enzyme deficiency which leads to metabolism problems. Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD) is one of the most common and severe hereditary metabolic disorders in Saudi Arabia. Patients and families were burdened by complex and regular dietary therapy menus because of the lack of information on food labels, it was also difficult to keep track of MSUD's typical diet. The prototype smart plate system proposed in this work may help patients with MSUD and their caregivers better manage the patients' MSUD diet. The use of knowledge-based, foo

Prevalence of 25(OH)D insufficiency and overweight/obesity in an adult population from the Central Italy.

BACKGROUND: Nowadays, excess weight is reaching epidemic proportions and it is necessary to identify patients at greater metabolic risk, in order to determine the most suitable pharmacological and dietetic options. On the other hand, vitamin D insufficiency (or hypovitaminosis D) is prevalent in obese patients. It most commonly occurs in people with inadequate sunlight exposure and nutritional intake of vitamin D, disorders limiting vitamin D absorption, and conditions impairing vitamin D conversion into active metabolite, including certain liver, kidney, and hereditary disorders. It can impai

Nutrition and oncology: best practice and the development of a traffic light system.

Malnutrition is common in oncology patients, with age, disease stage and tumour type all influencing malnutrition risk. There are several detrimental effects of malnutrition in oncology patients, including weight loss, which is associated with negative oncological outcomes, and reduced survival. The causes of malnutrition in this group may be multifactorial and include effects from the tumour itself, altered metabolism, increased nutritional requirements, and cancer treatments and their associated side effects, which can impact on an individual's ability and desire to eat. Lactose intolerance: An update on its pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment.

Lactose intolerance has a high prevalence worldwide, ranging between 57% and 65%. It is caused by a reduction or loss of the activity of the intestinal enzyme lactase-phlorizin hydrolase, responsible for the digestion of lactose. This alteration determines an increased osmotic load in the small intestine and the fermentation of lactose by the bacterial flora, which leads to a high production of short-chain fatty acids and gas. This is followed by the onset of abdominal pain, diarrhea, and flatulence. In addition to these problems, it was found that subjects with lactose intolerance have an inc
