Prolonged effect of two combined methods for Legionella disinfection in a hospital water system.

This study was conducted in our 650 bed general hospital, which is situated on the southern outskirts of Milan (Italy). After a first nosocomial case of pneumonia (caused by Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1), we first used a conventional method (heat shock) without success. To solve the problem we then tried a copper-silver ionization system combined with a chlorine dioxide device. During the four years after the installation of these two systems we recorded a significant (p < or = 0.05) reduction in Legionella colonization, and no new cases of Legionnaires' disease were observed. Our result

Ozonation of the marine dinoflagellate alga Amphidinium sp.--implications for ballast water disinfection.

Ozone has been investigated for its potential to remove marine dinoflagellate algae from ships' ballast water. Dinoflagellate algae, Amphidinium sp. isolated from the Great Barrier Reef, Townsville, Australia were used as indicators since these produce a type of cyst that is difficult to inactivate, but are relatively easy to culture. The ozonation experiments have demonstrated a high ozone demand for inactivation of the algal cultures, which increases as the culture ages. The main ozone demand in seawater is due to its reaction with bromide to form bromine compounds. The non-bromide ozone dem

Evaluation of the effectiveness of the Pastormaster method for disinfection of legionella in a hospital water distribution system.

The Pastormaster method consists of heating the water of hospital distribution systems at a specific point to a sufficient temperature for a minimum amount of time to eradicate legionella. The object of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Pastormaster method for legionella disinfection in a hospital environment. A two-phase procedure was performed: hydraulic optimization of the water supply circuit, and implementation of the Pastormaster method. Water samples were taken at 10 representative points in the hospital hot-water system and cultured microbiologically. Other physical a

Single-cell protein profiling of wastewater enterobacterial communities predicts disinfection efficiency.

The efficiency of enterobacterial disinfection is dependent largely on enterobacterial community physiology. However, the relationship between enterobacterial community physiology and wastewater processing is unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate this relationship. The influence of wastewater treatment processes on enterobacterial community physiology was examined at the single-cell level by using culture-independent methods. Intracellular concentrations of two conserved proteins, the growth-related protein Fis and the stationary-phase protein Dps, were analyzed by epifluoresen

[Full mouth one stage disinfection of the oropharynx. A new treatment strategy for periodontitis].

Most periodontal pathogens colonise different niches such as the oral mucosa, tongue, saliva, periodontal pockets, all hard intra-oral surfaces and the tonsils. Since intra-oral translocation of these pathogens between these niches is possible, a 'one stage' disinfection of the whole mouth in one or two consecutive days as treatment strategy for periodontal infections must be considered. A one stage full-mouth disinfection is achieved by a scaling and root planing of all periodontal pockets within 24 hours, in combination with a chlorhexidine application in all niches (subgingival irrigation,

Hydrogen abstraction and decomposition of bromopicrin and other trihalogenated disinfection byproducts by GC/MS.

Tribromonitromethane (bromopicrin), dibromochloronitromethane, bromodichloronitromethane, and trichloronitromethane (chloropicrin) have been identified as drinking water disinfection byproducts (DBPs). They are thermally unstable and decompose under commonly used injection port temperatures (200-250 degrees C) during gas chromatography (GC) or GC/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis. The major decomposition products are haloforms (such as bromoform), which result from the abstraction of a hydrogen atom from the solvent bythermally generated trihalomethyl radicals. A number of other products form

Effect of skin disinfection with octenidine dihydrochloride on insertion site colonization of intravascular catheters.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the efficacy of two commercially available, alcohol-based antiseptic solutions in decontaminating the insertion site of central lines. One solution contained the bispyridine octenidine dihydrochloride. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Inpatients receiving either a central venous catheter (CVC) or a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) were alternately assigned to different skin disinfection regimens at the insertion site: (A) 0.1% octendine dihydrochloride with 30% 1-propanol and 45% 2-propanol, (B) 74% ethanol with 10% 2-propanol. Quantitative skin cultures were obt

Synergistic effect of solar radiation and solar heating to disinfect drinking water sources.

Waterborne diseases are still common in developing countries as drinking water sources are contaminated and feasible means to reliably treat and disinfect these waters are not available. Many of these developing countries are in the tropical regions of the world where sunlight is plentiful. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of combining solar radiation and solar heating to disinfect contaminated water using a modified Family Sol*Saver System (FSP). The non-UV transmittable cover sheet of the former FSP system was replaced with an UV transmittable plastic cover sheet

Disinfection of eyelid specula with chlorhexidine gluconate (Hibiclens) after examinations for retinopathy of prematurity.

BACKGROUND: The preferred method of cleaning eyelid specula between examinations for retinopathy of prematurity is unknown. A previous study showed that disinfection with 70% isopropyl alcohol swabs fails to eliminate viruses and bacteria from the specula. OBJECTIVE: To determine if alternative sterilization procedures would allow multiple use of a single speculum without risking nosocomial infection. METHODS: In phase 1, 40 autoclave-sterilized eyelid specula were randomized into either "cleaned" or "patient control" groups after being used for routine retinopathy of prematurity examination

The synergistic effect of excimer and low-pressure mercury lamps on the disinfection of flowing water.

Microorganisms in flowing water were disinfected by UV radiation from two excimer (excited dimer) lamps (emitting at 172 and 222 nm) in combination with two low-pressure mercury lamps (emitting at 254 nm). Synergies were investigated among the three types of radiation in the treatment of water spiked in turn with Escherichia coli, Listeria innocua, Shewanella putrefaciens, and spores of Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus cereus. Synergy was demonstrated between radiations at 222 and 254 nm in the treatment of E. coli, L. innocua, and S. putrefaciens, but little or no synergy was observed in the tr

Factors affecting the stability of sodium hypochlorite solutions used to disinfect dental impressions.

Increased concern over the transmission of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, hepatitis B, herpes, and other diseases has prompted research into the disinfection of dental impressions. Among the factors to be considered when dental impressions are disinfected is the stability of the disinfectant solutions during storage and use. This study is concerned with the effect on disinfectant solutions of repeated immersion of alginate dental impressions taken in metal trays. The effects of the impression materials, metal trays, and dilution were evaluated, and the impact of light, heat, and storage w

[The use of UV rays for the disinfection of water. I. Microbiologic studies of drinking water].

As a physical disinfection method without chemicals required the ultraviolet irradiation was tested for disinfection of drinking water. The survival was measured as a function of exposure to radiation for S. enteritidis, E. cloacae, C. freundii, S. marcescens, E. coli, K. pneumoniae und S. faecium. The bacteria were grown in trypton soya broth until they were well into the exponential phase. Two different UV-disinfection units were tested. Both consist of cylindrical shaped chambers with one low-pressure mercury-discharge lamp with their longitudinal axis parallel to the chambers. With 10(6) c

[Use of UV rays for the disinfection of water. II. Microbiological studies of surface water].

Untreated surface water of a total bacterial count of approximately 10(4) cfu/ml was contaminated additionally with suspensions of E. coli and S. faecium, which contained about 10(6) cfu/ml. At flow rates of 7.2 m3/h, 4.0 m3/h and 2.0 m3/h the survival of bacteria as a function of exposure to radiation was measured with two different U.V.-disinfection units. In surface water, -without an additional contamination -minimum doses of radiation up to 74 mWs/cm2 were necessary to cause a reduction of 99.99% for total bacterial counts and counts of lactose-positive colonies. When suspensions of E. co
