We present a case of a fifty-seven year-old woman admitted with a one-year history of dysuria. The complaints and X-ray indicated urethral diverticulum. By cystourethroscopy a stone was found in the diverticulum. The diagnostic procedures and the treatment are discussed.

Urethral diverticula have proved to be a common cause of recurrent urinary tract infections in female subjects. Positive-pressure urethrography, mostly performed by means of double-balloon catheters, has hitherto been regarded as the method of choice for their detection. A congenital diverticulum of the ileum (Meckel's diverticulum), approximately 10 mm long, was detected in a rat and examined histologically. The histological findings were basically the same as in the ileum. Although Meckel's diverticulum is uncommon in the rat, the present report demonstrated the possibility of discovering new cases.

An observation is presented, of a female patient aged 62 years with a large abdominal tumour. Clinical and para-clinical examinations could not establish the organic origin of the formation. Surgery disclosed a giant tumour developed in a gastric diverticulum situated under the cardia. The 99mtechnetium pertechnetate nuclear red blood cell scan proved to be a valuable diagnostic tool in localizing the site of bleeding, from a Meckel's diverticulum, in a 41-year-old man. When peptic ulcer or colorectal disease has been excluded by panendoscopy, bleeding Meckel's diverticulum remains a diagnostic consideration, even in adults. We provide a 20-year list of bleeding Meckel's diverticula reported in adults, along with a brief discussion.

A complication of colonic diverticulosis, giant diverticula are seen above all in the sigmoid region. On the basis of a case involving the transverse colon, the authors stress the clinical and ultrasonographic pseudo-tumoural symptomatology as well as the degree of superinfection of the contents. Anatomical arguments would be in favour of pathogenesis by progressive increase in size of an ordinary diverticulum rather than by perforation with secondary encystment. Excision of the diverticulum required segmental colectomy.

A case of subcardial gastric diverticulum was surgically treated by an original technique which provided good exposure of the lesion and made it possible to sever all adhesions between the diverticulum and adjacent organs. This technique avoids gastrotomy and partial gastric resection.

A rare case report of leiomyosarcoma of Meckel's diverticulum, which caused torsion and strangulation of the diverticulum, is presented. The clinical picture was similar to acute appendicitis, which was the working diagnosis when the 42-yr-old Arab woman was sent to surgery. Although rare, leiomyosarcoma is the most common tumor of Meckel's diverticulum, and has to be considered in the differential diagnosis of right lower abdominal pain.

A case of carcinoma originating in a diverticulum of the urethra in a female patient is presented. A review of 143 cases of carcinoma of the female urethra treated from 1948 to 1984 at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute at Houston disclosed 6 additional patients with diverticular carcinoma. Two cases of acute inflammation of a solitary diverticulum of the caecal area are reported, which illustrate the unusual, but well documented, problems that may arise in this condition. The first patient presented with clinical symptoms and signs of acute appendicitis, but the operative findings suggested carcinoma of the caecum.
