Sudden cardiac death during scuba diving: a case report of a patient with unknown hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: Scuba diving is a recreational activity usually considered at low impact on cardiovascular system. However, when diving, increased ambient pressure exerts several effects on the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems, mainly due to redistribution of peripheral blood into the central circulation. This phenomenon, also known as blood shift, may produce a significant overload on a non-healthy heart. CASE SUMMARY: We present the case of a female patient who experienced sudden cardiac death during scuba diving: post-mortem cardiac magnetic resonance and autopsy revealed that the patient …

Diving into research without wading through content: A skills-based cell biology course emphasizing the unknown.

In a typical undergraduate biology curriculum, students do not dive into research until they first wade through large amounts of content. Biology courses in the first few years of the college curriculum tend to be lecture-based and exam-based courses. As a result, science students are mainly exposed to content knowledge-not the skills scientists practice daily. While students may practice manual techniques in lab sections of lecture courses, the higher-level analytical research skills are reserved for the final semesters of college. To address this issue, we created an undergraduate cell biolo

Mini Trampoline, a New and Promising Way of SCUBA Diving Preconditioning to Reduce Vascular Gas Emboli?

Background: Despite evolution in decompression algorithms, decompression illness is still an issue nowadays. Reducing vascular gas emboli (VGE) production or preserving endothelial function by other means such as diving preconditioning is of great interest. Several methods have been tried, either mechanical, cardiovascular, desaturation aimed or biochemical, with encouraging results. In this study, we tested mini trampoline (MT) as a preconditioning strategy. Methods: In total, eight (five females, three males; mean age 36 ± 16 years; body mass index 27.5 ± 7.1 kg/m2) healthy, non-smoking, div…

Diving and pulmonary physiology: Surfactant binding protein, lung fluid and cardiopulmonary test changes in professional divers.

Alteration of breathing pattern ranging from an increase of respiratory rate to overt hyperventilation during and after SCUBA diving is frequently reported and is associated with intrathoracic fluid overload. This study was undertaken to assess breathing efficiency after diving and the association with damage of alveolar cells. Ventilation efficiency (VE/VCO2) during maximal cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) before and 2h after a standard protocol dive has been analyzed in twelve professional males divers (39.5±10.5years). Furthermore, within 30min from surfacing, subjects underwent blood s…

Judging complex movement performances for excellence: a principal components analysis-based technique applied to competitive diving.

Athletes rely on subjective assessment of complex movements from coaches and judges to improve their motor skills. In some sports, such as diving, snowboard half pipe, gymnastics, and figure skating, subjective scoring forms the basis for competition. It is currently unclear whether this scoring process can be mathematically modeled; doing so could provide insight into what motor skill is. Principal components analysis has been proposed as a motion analysis method for identifying fundamental units of coordination. We used PCA to analyze movement quality of dives taken from USA Diving's 2009 Wo…

Cardiovascular adjustments in breath-hold diving: comparison between divers and non-divers in simulated dynamic apnoea.

The diving response is the sequence of cardiovascular, respiratory and metabolic adjustments produced by apnoea and further strengthened by cooling of the facial area and/or hypoxia. This study aimed at comparing the cardiovascular response to diving of trained divers with that of a control group. In this order, 14 trained divers were compared with 14 non-divers. By means of impedance cardiography and continuous monitoring of arterial pressure, hemodynamic data were collected during three different experimental sessions. Each session included a cycle-ergometer exercise against a workload of 0.…

Appearance of gas collections after scuba diving death: a computed tomography study in a porcine model.

INTRODUCTION: Postmortem computed tomography can easily demonstrate gas collections after diving accidents. Thus, it is often used to support the diagnosis of air embolism secondary to barotrauma. However, many other phenomenons (putrefaction, resuscitation maneuvers, and postmortem tissue offgassing) can also cause postmortem gas effusions and lead to a wrong diagnosis of barotrauma. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to determine topography and time of onset of postmortem gas collections respectively due to putrefaction, resuscitation maneuvers, and tissue offgassing. MATERIALS AND METHO…

Changes in lung ultrasound presentation induced by breath-hold diving in a simulated depth competition at Taiwan.

INTRODUCTION: Acute respiratory symptoms after diving are common among competitive breath-hold divers. These symptoms, including shortness of breath, cough, haemoptysis, and chest discomfort, are often linked to immersion pulmonary oedema (IPO) or pulmonary barotrauma. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence, clinical presentation, and risk factors of IPO using portable ultrasound devices in a depth competition for breath-hold divers in Taiwan. METHODS: This observational study was conducted during a competition around Liuqiu Island, Taiwan. Twenty-five breath-hold divers participated. Lun…

Agreement of precordial and subclavian Doppler ultrasound venous gas emboli grades in a large diving data set.

INTRODUCTION: Doppler ultrasound is used to detect inert gas bubbles in the body following decompression from dives. Two sites may be monitored, the precordial (PC) and subclavian (SC) positions. PC is the predominant site, allowing observation of bubbles returning from the entire body. However, the SC site provides unambiguous signals, whereas the PC site is noisy and difficult to grade. This retrospective study compared agreement of PC and SC Doppler data. METHODS: Datasets from the large University of California at San Diego Doppler database were graded on the Kisman Masurel (KM) scale and

Genomic, morphological and physiological data support fast ecotypic differentiation and incipient speciation in an alpine diving beetle.

An intricate interplay between evolutionary and demographic processes has frequently resulted in complex patterns of genetic and phenotypic diversity in alpine lineages, posing serious challenges to species delimitation and biodiversity conservation planning. Here we integrate genomic data, geometric morphometric analyses and thermal tolerance experiments to explore the role of Pleistocene climatic changes and adaptation to alpine environments on patterns of genomic and phenotypic variation in diving beetles from the taxonomically complex Agabus bipustulatus species group. Genetic structure an…

Chromosome-level genome provides insights into evolution and diving adaptability in the vulnerable common pochard (Aythya ferina).

The common pochard (Aythya ferina) is a freshwater diving duck found in the Palearctic region that has been classified as vulnerable by the IUCN due to continuous and rapid population declines across their distribution. To gain a better understanding of its genetic mechanism of adaptive evolution, we successfully sequenced and assembled the first high-quality chromosome-level genome of A. ferina using Illumina, Nanopore and Hi-C sequencing technologies. A total assembly length of 1,130.78 Mbp was obtained, with over 98.81% (1,117.37Mbp) of sequence anchored to 35 pseudo-chromosomes. We predict…

Intraspecific variation of thermal tolerance along elevational gradients: the case of a widespread diving beetle (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae).

Species distributed across wide elevational gradients are likely to experience local thermal adaptation and exhibit high thermal plasticity, as these gradients are characterised by steep environmental changes over short geographic distances (i.e., strong selection differentials). The prevalence of adaptive intraspecific variation in thermal tolerance with elevation remains unclear, however, particularly in freshwater taxa. We explored variation in upper and lower thermal limits and acclimation capacity among Iberian populations of adults of the widespread water beetle Agabus bipustulatus (Dyti

The first comprehensive population size estimations for the highly endangered largest diving beetle Dytiscus latissimus in Europe.

Dytiscus latissimus (Coleoptera Dytiscidae) is an endangered diving beetle throughout its range. It is one of the two species of Dytiscidae listed in Annex II of the Habitats Directive, IUCN red list and in many national level legislations and therefore strictly protected. The conservation of endangered species first of all requires an assessment of their population size. Until now, a method has not been developed for estimating the size of D. latissimus populations. The article summarizes the results of two studies carried out independently in Germany and Latvia. Both studies were carried out…
