Cellular immune responses in cetaceans immunized with a porcine erysipelas vaccine.

Clinical erysipelas represents a significant health problem in managed cetacean species. Vaccination was suspended in many oceanariums in the past due to losses associated with vaccine-induced hypersensitivities which were deemed to be a greater threat than clinical erysipelas. A perceived shift in clinical presentation of erysipelas from a chronic dermatologic form to an acute systemic form in dolphins sparked interest in re-initiating vaccination with improved subunit vaccines of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae. This manuscript describes the development and application of in vitro correlates of…

Taphonomic evidence for high-speed adapted fins in thunniform ichthyosaurs.

Ichthyosaurs have been compared with the fast-swimming thunniform groups of marine vertebrates, tuna, lamnid sharks, and dolphins, based on similarity of shape of the body and locomotory organs. In addition to shape, high-tensile stiffness of the control surfaces has been shown to be essential in maximizing hydrodynamic efficiency in extant thunniform swimmers. To date, there has been no evidence of a stiffening support system for the dorsal fin and dorsal lobe of the caudal fin in ichthyosaurs, the sole stiffening structure of the ventral lobe being an extension of the vertebral column along …

Distribution of dopaminergic fibers and neurons in visual and auditory cortices of the harbor porpoise and pilot whale.

The distribution of putative dopaminergic fibers in two sensory cortical areas in the brain of the harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) and pilot whale (Globicephala melaena) was analyzed at the light and electron microscopic levels using tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunohistochemistry. The quantitative analysis of the distribution of labeled fibers demonstrates that the primary visual cortex located in the lateral gyrus and entolateral sulcus contains a denser dopaminergic innervation than the auditory cortex within the posterior portion of the presylvian gyrus. In both areas, TH-immunoreactive

Legacy contaminants and low occurrence of PAHs in Sotalia guianensis from a highly impacted coastal region, Santos Basin, Brazil.

Guiana dolphins (Sotalia guianensis) are coastal top predators exposed to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). We evaluated PCBs, DDTs, and PAHs in liver tissues of 70 stranded individuals from the Santos Basin, southeastern Brazil. The maximum concentrations reached, in wet weight, 759 ng g⁻1 for total PCBs and 242 ng g⁻1 for total DDTs. Parent PAHs were quantified in 20 samples, predominantly as naphthalene, with concentrations up to 200 ng g⁻1. This indicates a low hepatic occurrence of the measured parent PAHs but does not necessarily imply low …

Skull shapes of the Lissodelphininae: radiation, adaptation and asymmetry.

Within Delphinidae, the sub-family Lissodelphininae consists of 8 Southern Ocean species and 2 North Pacific species. Lissodelphininae is a result of recent phylogenetic revisions based on molecular methods. Thus, morphological radiation within the taxon has not been investigated previously. The sub-family consists of ecologically diverse groups such as (1) the Cephalorhynchus genus of 4 small species inhabiting coastal and shelf waters, (2) the robust species in the Lagenorhynchus genus with the coastal La. australis, the offshore La. cruciger, the pelagic species La. obscurus and La. obliqui

The genomic structure of Brucella strains isolated from marine mammals gives clues to evolutionary history within the genus.

The genomic structure and the restriction maps were studied in 24 Brucella strains isolated from marine mammals. From SpeI restriction profiles, the strains could be ascribed to three clonal groups, each corresponding to a specific host. Cross contamination between exclusively terrestrial and exclusively marine hosts is unlikely suggesting the divergence of the different species of the genus Brucella which may have taken place 60 million years ago, concomitant with the radiation of their mammalian hosts (Artiodactyla) from other mammalian orders.

Evidence of Brucella sp. infection in marine mammals stranded along the coast of southern New England.

After recent isolations of Brucella sp. from pinnipeds and cetaceans, a survey was initiated to investigate the prevalence of Brucella sp. infections and serologic evidence of exposure in marine mammals stranded along the coasts of Connecticut and Rhode Island. One hundred and nineteen serum samples from four species of cetaceans and four species of pinnipeds were collected from 1985 to 2000 and tested for antibodies to Brucella sp. using the brucellosis card test, buffered acidified plate antigen test, and rivanol test. In addition, 20 of these were necropsied between 1998 and 2000, with lymp

A survey of Erysipelothrix insidiosa agglutinating antibody titers in vaccinated porpoises (Tursiops truncatus).

Antibody activity against Erysipelothrix insidiosa was measured in 15 porpoises which had undergone a series of vaccinations, at 6 month intervals, with erysipelas bacterin. Relatively high levels of aggluntinating antibodies were found to persist in the serum for a least 6 months following booster inoculations of the vaccine.

Marine debris ingestion by cetaceans stranded on the coast of Southern Brazil.

The Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (SWAO) is a global biodiversity hotspot where the impact of plastic pollution on cetaceans remains poorly understood. This study evaluated debris ingestion in cetaceans stranded along the southern Brazilian coast from 2015 to 2020. Of the 884 individuals with analyzed gastrointestinal contents, representing 22 species, debris was found in 10.1% of cases, with coastal species being the most vulnerable. The endangered Franciscana dolphin (Pontoporia blainvillei) showed the highest ingestion rate (17.9%). Pathological analysis of a subsample (n = 20) revealed that

Effect of Head Position on Maxillofacial Transverse Measurements Made on the Skull and Cone Beam Computed Tomography Scans.

Article Incorrect patient positioning and the resultant image distortion occur in many radiographic examinations. This study aimed to assess the effect of tilting, rotation and tipping of the head on the accuracy of maxillofacial transverse measurements made on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. The CBCT scans were obtained in central position of 10 dry human skulls. Using three-dimensional (3D) Dolphin software, six positions namely 10° and 20° tilts, rotations and tips were reconstructed of central position. Transverse distances between landmarks were measured on 3D scans and the sk

Three-dimensional airways volumetric analysis before and after fast and early mandibular osteodistraction.

PURPOSE: Newborns with Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) and syndromic micrognathia show microgenia and glossoptosis, which cause reduction of the airway and breathing difficulty from birth. Our goal is to analyze quantitative and qualitative volumetric changes before and after fast and early mandibular osteodistraction (FEMOD) and to compare radiological data. METHODS: The sample was composed of 4 patients, who satisfied inclusion criteria for completeness of data. Computed tomography pre- and post-operation were performed, then a volumetric assessment was made with Dolphin Imaging. Polysomnograph

Serodiagnosis of melioidosis by a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using a lipopolysaccharide-specific monoclonal antibody.

Burkholderia pseudomallei is the causative agent of melioidosis, a severe and potentially fatal infectious disease in humans known to be endemic in Southeast Asia and northern Australia. The infection is also increasingly recognized in various animal species with a potential to spread to humans. With the potential as a biological warfare agent, specific serodiagnosis of melioidosis for surveillance in large populations at risk, humans or animals, would be highly valuable. In this study, a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using a lipopolysaccharide-specific monoclonal antib

VerteBrain reveals novel neural and non-neural protein assemblies conserved across vertebrate evolution.

Protein-protein interactions underlie core brain functions, including neurotransmitter release, receptor activation, and intracellular signaling essential for learning, memory, and cognition. Here, we systematically map conserved brain protein interactions across five vertebrate species-rabbit, chicken, dolphin, pig, and mouse-using co-fractionation and immunoprecipitation mass spectrometry. From 2,197 biochemical fractions, we identify over 81,000 high-confidence interactions among 6,108 conserved proteins. This interaction map (VerteBrain) reveals both regulatory and structural complexes, in

Neospora caninum-induced NETosis in canine colostral polymorphonuclear neutrophils.

Neospora caninum represents an obligate intracellular apicomplexan parasite of the family Sarcocystidae causing severe reproductive disorders in cattle, small ruminants, wild animals and canids worldwide. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) were recently described as effective host defense mechanism of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) derived from cattle, dogs, goats and dolphins against N. caninum tachyzoites. Nonetheless, nothing is known so far on canine colostral PMN immune reactions against N. caninum although breeding bitches represent a susceptible dog cohort and infected bitches m…

Anatomy and Functional Morphology of the Mysticete Rorqual Whale Larynx: Phonation Positions of the U-Fold.

Many Mysticetes (baleen whales) are acoustically active marine mammals. This is epitomized by rorquals, and specifically male humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) whose complex songs comprise a wide range of vocalizations. The sound production mechanism of odontocetes (toothed whales, including dolphins and porpoises) is well described, in contrast to that of mysticetes whose vocalization mechanism remains a subject of active scientific investigation. Anatomical observations and acoustic signal processing have led to divergent hypotheses under the framework of a production-based approach. …

Characterisation of North American Brucella isolates from marine mammals.

Extension of known ecological niches of Brucella has included the description of two novel species from marine mammals. Brucella pinnipedialis is associated predominantly with seals, while two major Brucella ceti clades, most commonly associated with porpoises or dolphins respectively, have been identified. To date there has been limited characterisation of Brucella isolates obtained from marine mammals outside Northern European waters, including North American waters. To address this gap, and extend knowledge of the global population structure and host associations of these Brucella species, …

Cochlear representation of wideband biosonar sounds and the emergence of neural oscillations.

Echolocating big brown bats and bottlenose dolphins broadcast wideband ultrasonic echolocation calls in the baseband to sense their surroundings. Even though these species inhabit different media and emit echolocation calls with different spectra, both show similar perceptual acuity: They determine target range from echo delay, they detect changes in echo delay on a microsecond scale, and they perceive ultrasonic phase. These perceptual performances are too acute to understand on the basis of single neuron responses, and even neural population responses do not reach the required behavioral val…
