Dopamine (DA) is generally accepted to be an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the carotid body (CB). It is released and depleted from the CB by acute hypoxia. From this background we made the hypothesis that hypoxic depletion of CB DA could be responsible for a time-dependent increase in CB afferent output and the early phase of ventilatory acclimatization to hypoxia (VAH) in goats. Anorectic effects of apomorphine were studied in a microstructural analysis paradigm. Systemic apomorphine reduced food intake by reducing both the rate of eating and the time spent eating. The serum dopamine-beta-hydroxylase activity of 134 carefully selected paranoid schizophrenic patients was compared with that of 118 normal controls. Significantly reduced serum DBH activity found in the schizophrenic group in comparison to the control group could not be brought into relationship with the patients' age, nor with neuroleptic treatment. Manic depressive patients showed values similar to the normal control group. It is discussed that mainly genetically determined low serum DBH activity may be related to the hyperdopaminergic pathomechanism of paranoid schizophrenia.

The urinary excretion of free dopamine was measured in patients with increased prostaglandin synthesis and the effect of inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis on dopamine excretion was examined. Dopamine excretion in patients with Bartter's syndrome was not different from that of normal controls. Treatment with indomethacin for 6 or 7 days did not affect dopamine excretion in either Bartter's syndrome or in a group of normal control subjects. It appears that changes in endogenous prostaglandin synthesis do not affect urinary dopamine excretion.

Changes in chemosensory responses to i.v. NaCN during i.v. infusions of dopamine (DA) were studied in pentobarbitone-anesthetized cats. After sectioning both carotid nerves, one of them was prepared for electrophysiological recordings of its chemosensory impulses. Basal chemosensory activity was maintained at a reduced level during DA infusions at a rate of 10 micrograms/kg/min. While sensitivity to NaCN was not modified, reactivity to this agent was reduced for low doses, but enhanced for high doses. Two patients developed polyuria with natriuresis while receiving intravenous dopamine hydrochloride for the treatment of hypotension.
