In February 1998, an outbreak of acute febrile illness was reported from the Kapalata military camp in Kisangani, the Democratic Republic of Congo. The illness was characterized by an acute onset of fever associated with severe headache, arthralgia, backache, neurologic signs, abdominal pain, and coughing. Clinical decision analysis is a technique which is used to deal with uncertainities in clinical medicine. We used this technique to compare the cost-effectiveness of chloramphenicol and ciprofloxacin in the treatment of enteric fever. The study shows that the most economical alternative can be predicted if the cost of hospital stay and the sensitivity of the organism to chloramphenicol are known. Cytokines play a role in the immunopathological and molecular mechanisms of drug-induced hypersensitivity reactions (HSR). The objective of the current report was to analyze the reliability and correlation between the clinical symptoms observed in a patient that presented an ibuprofen-induced Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), her lymphocyte toxicity assay to the incriminated drug, and the cytokine secretion in the patient's sera.
