The Burden of the "Simple Ankle Sprains": A Review of the Epidemiology and Long-Term Impact.

Lateral ankle sprain (LAS) is not as simple as it was believed to be as it has substantial negative impacts on the active sporting population. The negative impact on physical function, quality of life (QoL) and economic burden is significant with increased risk of reinjury, development of chronic lateral ankle instability and posttraumatic ankle osteoarthritis resulting in functional deficits, decreased QoL and chronic disabilities. Economic burden from a societal perspective demonstrated notably higher indirect costs from productivity loss. Preventative interventions with early surgery for a

Clinical economics review: cost-effectiveness of treatment alternatives for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease is a chronic recurring disorder, which is widespread, especially in Western societies. Faced with increasing health costs and finite resources, an increasingly important part of evaluating new treatments is economic appraisal. In this paper, we review critically the published economic studies of the cost-effectiveness of treatments for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. Proton pump inhibitors are considered the best choice for the management of grades II-IV oesophagitis and are more cost-effective than H2-receptor antagonists because of their fast healing of o

[Application of health economics assessment techniques in the prevention and control of important infectious diseases: a review].

Due to the relative shortage of health resources, rational allocation and utilization of health resources is critical to achieving the maximum economic benefits in developing countries, which requires a health economic assessment to meet the needs to balance the competitive requirements of cost reduction and effectiveness enhancement. This review describes the advances in applications of health economic assessment techniques in four major infectious diseases, including AIDS, tuberculosis, hepatitis B and schistosomiasis. Currently, there is no standard economic assessment in the prevention and

Suubi+Adherence study protocol: A family economic empowerment intervention addressing HIV treatment adherence for perinatally infected adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Globally, 1.8 million children<15 years are living with HIV. Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), as a region, is heavily burdened by HIV, with 90% of new infections among children happening there. Within SSA, Uganda has an HIV prevalence of 7.2% among 15-49-year-olds, with high prevalence in Masaka region (12%). Uganda also reports unprecedented numbers of perinatally HIV-infected children, with close to 150,000 children (ages 0-14) living with HIV (CLHA). However adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) among children and youth is poor, and has been attributed to economic insecurity, inclu

Economic violence to women and girls: is it receiving the necessary attention?

Most studies on gender-based violence (GBV) have focused on its physical, sexual, and psychological manifestations. This paper seeks to draw attention to the types of economic violence experienced by women, and describes its consequences on health and development. Economic violence experienced included limited access to funds and credit; controlling access to health care, employment, education, including agricultural resources; excluding from financial decision making; and discriminatory traditional laws on inheritance, property rights, and use of communal land. At work women experienced recei

Economic risk proneness in middle childhood: Uncertainty-driven exploration or novelty-seeking?

Although economic risk proneness is usually observed in young children, the issues of how this preference changes during development and how novelty and uncertainty interact in motivating children's economic choices are unclear. This study investigated the developmental trajectory and mechanisms underlying attitude toward risk in the gain domain between 7 and 9 years of age. A total of 225 7- to 9-year-olds were presented with a series of gambling tasks in which they needed to choose between two options: one safe and one risky but with the same expected value. Among the three tasks proposed to

Economic Evaluations in Electrophysiology in the Last 15 Years: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Electrophysiology (EP) procedures, including cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) and ablations, are widely used to manage arrhythmias and heart failure. These interventions, though effective, require substantial resources, prompting the need for systematic economic evaluations to inform healthcare decision-making. METHODS: A systematic review of studies from 2007 to 2024 was conducted in two phases. Phase one assessed trends in economic evaluations of EP procedures, analyzing 129 studies across regions and timeframes. Phase two focused on cost-effectiveness analyses of

The economic benefits of fracture prevention.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis-related fractures represent a significant and growing public health concern, especially in aging populations. Despite the availability of effective treatments, significant care gaps persist in both primary and secondary prevention. AREAS COVERED: This narrative review synthesizes key findings from economic evaluations examining the cost-effectiveness of pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies, fracture liaison services (FLS), and FRAX®-based intervention thresholds. Relevant literature was reviewed, including systematic reviews, country specific studies, a

Gambling revenues as a public administration issue: electronic gaming machines in Victoria.

Gambling activities and the revenues derived have been seen as a way to increase economic development in deprived areas. There are also, however, concerns about the effects of gambling in general and electronic gaming machines (EGMs) in particular, on the resources available to the localities in which they are situated. This paper focuses on the factors that determine the extent and spending of community benefit-related EGM-generated resources within Victoria, Australia, focusing in particular on the relationships between EGM activity and socio-economic and social capital indicators, and how t…

Socio-demographic and economic correlates of overweight status in Chinese adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate over-weight prevalence and socio-demographic and economic correlates in Chinese adolescents. METHODS: Weight, height, waist circumference, and socio-demo-graphic and economic variables of 6863 middle and high school students were measured. RESULTS: 10% of girls and 17% of boys were overweight. Waist circumference and overweight risk were significantly associated with pubertal status (P<0.05). High levels of parental education and family income were significant risk factors for overweight (P<0.05). DISCUSSION: Our findings underscore the need for development of evid

Risk Profiles of Women Experiencing Initial and Repeat Incarcerations: Implications for Prevention Programs.

Incarcerated women experience myriad individual, interpersonal, and structural factors leading to arrest and rearrest. This study examined risk profiles of women experiencing initial and repeat incarcerations. The sample included 521 women recruited from two prisons in North Carolina and enrolled in a HIV/STD risk-reduction intervention trial. Variables included socio-demographics, structural/economic factors, sexual and substance use behaviors, STDs, victimization history, and depressive symptoms. Bivariate and multivariable analyses identified risk differences. Compared to women incarcerated

Height of female Americans in the 19th century and the antebellum puzzle.

Using 19th century state prison records, this study contrasts the biological standard of living of comparable US African-American and white females during a period of relatively rapid economic development. White females were consistently taller than black females by about 1.5 cm (0.6 in.). Whites from Great Lakes and Plains states and black Southwestern females were the tallest. US females were tall compared to their European counterparts. The height of females began to decline in the antebellum period, possibly before that of males. The recovery of physical stature was also earlier among fema…

Animal Trypanosomiasis: Challenges and Prospects for New Vaccination Strategies.

Animal trypanosomiasis, such as nagana, surra, and dourine, represent a significant challenge to animal health and economic development, especially in tropical and subtropical regions where livestock production is an essential component of a country's economy. Despite advances in the control of human trypanosomiasis, animal diseases caused by several species of trypanosomes remain neglected. The lack of funding for the development of new treatments and vaccines contributes to sustaining the severe economic impacts these diseases have on the farming industry, especially in low-income rural area…
