BACKGROUND: Radial head fractures often occur in association with other elbow fractures and soft-tissue injuries. Radial head replacement is indicated for irreparable radial head fractures associated with elbow instability. The purpose of this study was to analyze the results after treatment of such injuries with a titanium radial head prosthesis, repair of torn collateral ligaments, and early mobilization of the elbow.
METHODS: Sixteen patients with sixteen Mason type-III radial head fractures and collateral ligament injury were treated with use of a titanium radial head prosthesis over a fi

BACKGROUND: Pickleball has grown rapidly in popularity in recent years, accompanied by an increasing number of reported injuries among players. Our aim is to determine the epidemiology of pickleball-related injuries at a single academic center and evaluate patient-specific factors such as incidence and type of injury, mechanisms of injury, and treatment outcomes.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study at a tertiary academic outpatient orthopedic and physical medicine and rehabilitation clinic. We reviewed 164 cases of patients presenting with pickleball-related injuries from 2019 to 2023 in

There are 26 large climbing centres and 44 smaller indoor or outdoor climbing walls in The Netherlands at this time. Hand and finger injuries are the most common types of sport climbing injuries. Most injuries are caused by overstraining. Injuries include avulsion fractures, arthrosis, pulley rupture, damage to joint capsule and collateral ligaments, 'gamekeeper's thumb', 'climber's finger', lumbrical shift syndrome, 'climber's elbow', shoulder injuries and nerve compression syndromes. Treatment is usually conservative. Depending on the extent of damage surgical intervention may be indicated.

Medial elbow pain is a common presentation that can be a challenge to appropriately treat for the orthopedic surgeon. Causes include medial epicondylitis, ulnar neuritis, ulnar collateral ligament injury, flexor pronator strain, or snapping medial triceps. A good outcome is typically achieved with adequate treatment of tendon degeneration at the common flexor tendon origin. Mainstay treatment is nonoperative modalities such as stretching, rest, activity modification, therapy, and injections. If nonoperative management fails, intermediate interventions such as extracorporeal shockwave therapy,

BACKGROUND: Intra-articular elbow fractures are considered to be one of the most complex injuries in orthopedic trauma. Some are too comminuted for open reduction and internal fixation. Recently, total elbow replacement (TER) has gained popularity for the treatment of comminuted elbow trauma when other treatment options are not possible.
METHODS: Since 2007-2013 we treated 18 patients with TER due to comminuted distal humeral fractures. We used the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand scoring system (DASH) to evaluate the patient's satisfaction. In addition we evaluated the elbow range

Fractures of the radial head are among the more common injuries of the upper extremity. Their incidence is increasing, and these fractures are often associated with ligamentous injuries or occur as part of complex injury patterns, such as the terrible triad, Monteggia-like lesions, or Essex-Lopresti injuries. Radial head fractures are classified according to the Mason/Johnston system. In cases where the fracture is not reconstructable, or when osteosynthesis fails, radial head arthroplasty may be indicated.Several prosthetic designs are available, each offering unique features. These include d

Radial head fractures represent the most common elbow fractures. Undisplaced fractures usually occur in isolation and can be treated nonsurgically. Displaced fractures should be treated surgically. Simple two-part fractures can easily be handled by osteosynthesis, but comminuted fractures pose a major problem for reconstruction. As the radial head is an important stabilizer of the elbow joint-especially in the context of concomitant ligamentous injuries-its resection may lead to pain, limited range of motion, and instability. Therefore, radial head resection is not recommended for the acute si

This is a retrospective review of nine coronal shear fractures of the distal humerus. Two were isolated fractures and seven were associated with other peri-articular elbow injuries, termed "complex" coronal shear fractures. All cases underwent immediate open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and were then followed for an average of 14 months (range: 6.5 to 23 months) with outcomes evaluated using the Mayo Elbow Performance Scoring system. There was a significant difference found between injuries limited to the radiocapitellar (RC) joint (isolated coronal shear fractures, or those associat…

As a pivotal part of the elbow joint structure, the coronoid process of the ulna plays a vital role in maintaining elbow joint stability. Loss of coronoid process height causes instability of the elbow joint depending on the fracture characteristics and size. The diagnosis and treatment of coronoid process fractures has gained widespread attention from orthopedic surgeons. Nevertheless, few reports have described reconstruction of coronoid process fractures and defects that affect elbow joint stability. Treatment of elbow joint instability induced by coronoid process defects is challenging bec

Magnetic resonance imaging provides clinically useful information in assessing the elbow joint. Superior depiction of muscles, ligaments, and tendons as well as the ability to directly visualize nerves, bone marrow, and hyaline cartilage are advantages of magnetic resonance imaging relative to conventional imaging techniques. Ongoing improvements in surface coil design and newer pulse sequences have resulted in higher quality magnetic resonance images of the elbow. Traumatic and degenerative disorders of the elbow are well seen with MR imaging. The sequelae of medial traction and lateral compr

We report the occurrence of a rare injury in a teenager not yet described in the literature: the association of posteromedial elbow dislocation, lateral condyle and coronoid process fractures. The treatment required fixation of lateral condyle and coronoid process thanks to lateral and medial approaches and capsular fixation. This lesion is unstable, such as the terrible triad described in adults. It requires external and anterior stabilization of the elbow. The management of such injuries of the elbow is complex. It must consider both bone and ligament instability, and risk of injury to growt

BACKGROUND: Ipsilateral Galeazzi fracture with elbow dislocation, namely the "floating ulna" injury, is a rare injury pattern. A few reports have described this type of injury and its treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 33-year-old female at 38+ weeks gestational age presented with Galeazzi fracture and posterolateral elbow dislocation of the left upper extremity. The patient was treated with closed reduction of the elbow, open reduction, and internal fixation of the radial shaft fracture with a dynamic compression plate and K-wire stabilization of the unstable distal radioulnar joint. At the 12-

Some patients who sustain C5 to C7 nerve root injuries may demonstrate a natural recovery of elbow extension via the lower trunk; however the surgical effect of the reinnervation of the triceps brachii in such cases is still unknown. This study aims to determine the incidence of spontaneous recovery of the tricipital function and to identify the clinical and/or radiological predictors of poor spontaneous functional rehabilitation of elbow extension resulting from injuries of the upper roots of the brachial plexus. We conducted a review of the charts of 24 subjects sustaining an upper trunk syn

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fragility fractures (DRFFs) are common injuries in older adults following low-energy falls. While wrist radiographs are standard, additional “completion imaging” of the ipsilateral hand, forearm, and elbow is frequently obtained, though its diagnostic yield and clinical utility are poorly defined. This study aimed to evaluate the yield of completion imaging in DRFFs and identify risk factors for concomitant injuries outside the wrist. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at a tertiary academic center from 2017-2024. Patients aged ≥50 years with radiogra

BACKGROUND: In many cases of severe closed injury involving the upper trunk of the brachial plexus, the proximal stump is too damaged to permit direct repair. Under these circumstances, several alternative sources of neurotization have been described, three of which are analyzed here.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Thirteen patients with brachial plexus injury had paralysis of elbow flexion owing to damage of either the upper trunk or the lateral cord. In four patients, the musculocutaneous nerve was reinnervated through cross-union with the thoracodorsal nerve; all regained strong elbow flexion. One o

The lateral collateral ligament (LCL) complex of the elbow is a capsuloligamentous structure, critical for elbow stability. Though isolated ligamentous injuries have been reported in literature, there are no studies reporting avulsion fractures of the lateral ligamentous complex of the elbow with joint incarceration in a child. An 11-year-old boy presented to the emergency department after a fall from height, with pain and swelling to the lateral side of his left elbow. Radiographs established a fracture of the lateral condyle and CT imaging confirmed an avulsion of the lateral ligamentous com
