STUDY DESIGN: This is a case report.
INTRODUCTION: Anconeus is a small, triangular muscle in the posterior aspect of the elbow, and it functions as weak elbow extensor and abducts the ulna during pronation. The contribution of anconeus muscle can cause lateral elbow pain, which is difficult to diagnose and treat. It also does not respond to the regular treatment for lateral epicondylitis.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The purpose of this study was to report anconeus muscle irritation as a sole cause for lateral elbow pain.
METHODS: The patient was given an elbow splint for 4-6 weeks followed with e

The elbow joint needs to be both mobile and stable to exercise its hinge function, which is the key to a normal upper limb. Loss of motion in the elbow joint leads to an exponential functional handicap. Elbow trauma is a common cause of elbow stiffness. Open elbow arthrolysis with release of the capsule has been demonstrated to be a very useful treatment. Arthroscopic elbow arthrolysis has now gained popularity, along with the rapid evolution in elbow arthroscopy. The authors present the preliminary results of this technique in 12 patients, with a mean follow-up of 19.4 months. The range of mo…

BACKGROUND: Internal fixation for severe open articular bone defects is sometimes ineffective or dangerous. In the emergency stage, radical … hroplasty was performed using a unique three-dimensional (3D) printed prosthesis to reconstruct the elbow joint. During the follow-up, the elbow movement function was satisfactory.
CONCLUSIONS: The modified Masquelet technique assisting 3D printing of personalized elbow joint makes the satisfactory functional reconstruction for open high-energy injuries come …

In children, traumatic elbow dislocations usually occur after the epiphysis has closed and with associated radial head and neck fractures and osteochondral fragments. The fragments are also usually interposed in the joint restricting complete congruent joint motion. We report on 3 children with traumatic elbow fracture-dislocation with associated radial head and neck injuries treated with open reduction and stabilisation. All patients achieved good outcomes and returned to pre-injury level of activities.

The third and fourth intercostal nerves were sutured to the musculocutaneous nerve to restore flexion of the elbow joint in complete (preganglionic) brachial plexus injuries. Seventeen patients were followed on the average for 5 years and 7 months after surgery. The results were evaluated by means of manual muscle tests and electrical diagnostic tests. Good (grade IV), or better, flexion of the elbow joint occurred in 12 patients over 3 years after the operation.

BACKGROUND: Coronoid fracture height is an independent factor influencing elbow joint stability. In the terrible triad of the elbow, coronoid fractures are typically manifest as small transverse fractures involving the coronoid tip. Anatomical reduction and stable fixation of the coronoid fragment are therefore critical for restoring concentric reduction and reliable stability of the elbow joint. This study investigated the effect of coronoid fracture fragment height on elbow joint stability under dual parallel Kirschner wire fixation and explored the quantitative relationship among fragment h…

Degenerative joint disease following trauma to the elbow is difficult to manage in any patient. However, this condition becomes substantially more challenging in the young, active population. Increased activity demands and limited functional capacity of total elbow arthroplasty mean that joint arthroplasty should be regarded as a salvage procedure. The primary goal of treatment is to restore a pain-free or minimally painful functional joint while preserving future surgical options. This requires accurate assessment of the primary patient complaint, be it terminal pain and stiffness or pain alo

Recurrent anterior dislocation of the ulnar nerve at the cubital tunnel is reported in two patients. This was due to traumatic attenuation of the flexor carpi ulnaris retinaculum. The mechanism of injury in both patients was a fall with the shoulder abducted and the elbow acutely flexed. Both patients had relief of their neurologic symptoms following anterior submuscular transposition of the ulnar nerve.

PROBLEM: Fractures of the distal humerus are difficult to treat. In elderly patients, diminished bone mineral quality and increased trauma-associated joint destruction may make stable joint reconstruction even more problematic. Furthermore, comorbidities and poor tolerance of joint immobilization might be additional factors which influence elbow function negatively. Until now, disagreement has existed on how to treat these fractures in elderly patients. Recommendations range from conservative treatment to primary total elbow replacement. So far, reports in the literature on whether or not open

This case report describes the results of bilateral elbow arthrotomy and a unilateral ulnar osteotomy in a 10-month-old dog with bilateral elbow dysplasia. Fragmented coronoid processes were removed from both joints via bilateral medial arthrotomies. On the right side an ulnar osteotomy was also performed using a caudolateral approach. Bilateral flexed lateral elbow radiographs taken before surgery and 5 months postoperatively were assessed for changes in osteophyte size on the anconeal process, caudal epicondylar ridge and radial head. Osteophytes on the anconeal process and caudal epicondyla

A new technique of restored flexion in the elbow joint in an inveterate injury of the brachial plexus is described. The insertion of the long head of the triceps brachii muscle was transferred with an intact nervous and vascular supply to the anterior brachial region and sutured above the radial tuberosity with the insertion tendon of the biceps brachii muscle. The muscle strength three months after surgery according to the muscle test was 4-. Flexion in the elbow joint was possible up to 85 degrees. Extension in the elbow joint was preserved, the muscle strength was 3. Anatomical investigatio…

INTRODUCTION: The primary symptoms of elbow osteoarthritis are the progressive development of stiffness along with pain at the end range of motion due to osteophyte impingement. Surgical treatment involves resecting these "bone stops". In the literature, these osteophytic lesions are more common than cartilage lesions, which suggests they may occur beforehand. The aim of our study was to confirm osteophytes are more common than cartilage lesions, and also to establish a link between these lesions and the functional outcomes.
METHODS: This was a prospective multicenter (8 hospitals) study cond

BACKGROUND: The elbow is one of the most commonly dislocated joints, and dislocation is usually accompanied with an assortment of soft tissue injuries. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively analyze and describe the patterns of ligamentous, tendinous, and muscular injuries in patients with an acute elbow dislocation and subsequent magnetic resonance image (MRI) evaluation.
METHODS: From 2008 to 2020, 235 patients clinically diagnosed with an elbow dislocation were seen in the department, of which only 19 underwent an MRI of the affected elbow. Twelve patients met inclusion criteria,

Background: Posterolateral rotatory instability (PLRI) is a common form of recurrent elbow instability. The aim of this systematic review is to present the outcomes and complications of lateral ulnar collateral ligament (LUCL) reconstruction surgery for PLRI. Methods: A literature search of LUCL reconstructions was performed, identifying 99 potential papers; 11 of which met inclusion/exclusion criteria, accounting for 148 patients. Papers were included if they reviewed cases of PLRI from 1976 to 2016 with reported outcome measures. Data were pooled and analyzed focusing on patient demographics

Individuals with cerebellar ataxia face significant challenges in controlling reaching, especially when multi-joint movements are involved. This study investigated the effects of kinematic and dynamic demands on reaching using a home-based virtual reality task. Participants with and without cerebellar ataxia reached to target locations designed to elicit a range of coordination strategies between shoulder and elbow joint movements. Compared with control subjects, cerebellar subjects presented greater initial reaching direction errors, larger hand trajectory curvatures, and more variability. Ki…
