Combined use of modulated ultrasound and electric current stimulation for diabetic foot ulcers: a case series.

OBJECTIVE: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a significant challenge in wound care practice. Our aim was to evaluate the combined use of of two therapies, ultrasound and electrostimulation, in the treatment of DFUs. METHOD: This study employed a prospective, non-comparative, case series design, undertaken in a podiatry-led diabetic foot clinic, in an acute hospital setting, in an urban location in Ireland. We recruited patinets with hard-to-heal DFUs who were treated twice a week with combined modulated ultrasound and electric current stimulation. RESULTS: We recruited seven patients with eigh

SPET monitoring of auditory cortex activation by electric stimulation in a patient with auditory brainstem implant.

Auditory cortex activation following multifrequency acoustic stimulation has been evaluated by means of single photon emission tomography (SPET) in one patient before and after an auditory brainstem implant (ABI). No activation could be observed after acoustic stimulation before ABI. After ABI stimulation in the coronal and axial slices, the activation within the temporal cortex contralateral to the stimulated ear was twice (43.76%) that of normal controls (23.94 +/- 2.74%). This marked difference was not present in other selected cortical auditory areas (homolateral temporal, homolateral and

[Impact of electric cardiac stimulation on ventricular function and the natural history of patients with myocardiopathy].

There has recently been an increasing interest in beneficial effects of cardiac pacing in patients with myocardial diseases, especially in Obstructive Hypertrophic and Dilated Cardiomyopathy. The experience with dual-chamber pacing for obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is now important. DDD pacing for sinus rhythm patients and VVI pacing in patients with atrial fibrillation have shown considerable symptomatic improvement, with a significant decrease of angina, dyspnea, presyncope and frank syncope. It has been suggested that DDD pacing may prevent sudden death and improve survival rates

[Stellate ganglion block with transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS): a double-blind study with healthy probands].

OBJECTIVE: Blockade of the stellate ganglion is an established and highly effective diagnostic and therapeutic procedure for management of certain acute and chronic pain syndromes or other disorders. The paratracheal injection of a local anaesthetic is the simplest and most frequently used approach for blocking the cervicothoracic sympathetic nerves (ganglion stellate). However, since serious complications can occur during or following the anterior paratracheal technique including accidental intravenous or intraarterial injection, non-invasive methods for blockade of the stellate ganglion have

[Restorative electric stimulation of the optic nerve in patients with diseases of the chiasmal-sellar area].

Presented is the clinical experience with vision restitution by direct electrostimulation (ES) of lesioned visual nerves in 128 operated patients with chiasmal-sellar diseases (chiasmal-sellar tumors and optico-chiasmatic arachnoiditis). Comparative analysis of ES-treated and control group was performed. Indications for this technique were determined in different forms of the disease depending on its severity and duration. ES showed positive results increasing the reliability and speed of vision restitution in operated patients.

The effect of the acoustic nerve chronic electric stimulation upon the guinea pig cochlear nucleus development.

14 newborn guinea pigs have been deafened three days after birth by bilateral destruction of the organ of Corti, and among them 8 have been supplied with a chronic auditory electric stimulation by means of an intracochlear implanted electrode. The histological study and the anatomical reconstructions of these animals' cochlear nuclei demonstrate that this chronic stimulation prevents, at least partially, these auditory pathway medullary formations from atrophy due to the cochlear destruction.

Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Working Memory Enhancement: A Comparative Study of Electrical and Ultrasound Stimulation.

OBJECTIVES: Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a noninvasive neuromodulation technique that has shown potential to enhance cognitive function, including working memory. This study investigated the acute effects of both electrical taVNS (E-taVNS) and ultrasound taVNS (U-taVNS) modalities on working memory by using a 3-back task in healthy young adults. We hypothesized that active taVNS would enhance working memory performance compared with sham and that both stimulation modalities would engage similar neuromodulatory mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-nine partic

Effects of multiple motor point stimulation on knee joint torque compared with conventional functional electrical stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Functional electrical stimulation (FES) delivers transcutaneous electrical current to motor nerves to artificially evoke muscle contractions and produce joint torque. In neurorehabilitation, FES is commonly applied via a large surface electrode pair placed over a muscle group-an approach that we here refer to as single-electrode stimulation (SES). However, the torque-generating capacity of SES is limited, possibly due to spatial-fixation of recruited motor units. Targeting specific regions of high electrical excitability, or motor points, may enhance neuromuscular activation and in
