Overnight recordings of intracranial pressure and electroencephalography in neurosurgical patients. Part I: Intracranial pressure waves and their clinical correlations.

Simultaneous overnight recordings of intracranial pressure (ICP) and electroencephalography (EEG) were conducted on 85 neurosurgical patients with intracranial hypertension and/or ventriculomegaly. Intracranial pressure waves were classified into five types according to the pattern of appearance, and their correlation with sleep cycles and clinical conditions of patients were investigated. A-waves appeared exclusively in patients with long-standing intracranial hypertension, and episodic B-waves appeared in patients with chronic hydrocephalus or a postoperative tumor-free condition. When these…

The first seizure in adult life. Value of clinical features, electroencephalography, and computerised tomographic scanning in prediction of seizure recurrence.

408 adults (age 16 and over) were followed up after their initial seizure. The actuarial risk of recurrence was highest in the early weeks. For those seen within the first week, the risk of recurrence was 52% by the end of 3 years. In univariate analysis, the only clinical variable that was associated with recurrence was the time of day at which the initial seizure occurred. There was a tendency, that did not reach statistical significance, for younger age (less than 50 years) and a family history of seizures of any type, including febrile convulsions, to be associated with recurrence. Such ri

Electroencephalography-based Alzheimer's disease detection using multi-scale information retention transform: a subject-level comparison of machine learning classifiers.

INTRODUCTION: This exploratory study evaluates Multi-Scale Information Retention Transform (MSIRT), a feature-fusion framework for electroencephalography (EEG)-based Alzheimer's disease (AD) classification. METHODS: Ratios between differential entropies were removed, and all EEG amplitudes were converted to volts before feature extraction because the transform is not invariant to arbitrary physical units. Revised MSIRT combines fuzzy entropy (FE), permutation entropy (PE), and differential entropy (DE) using training-fold normalization and cross-feature products. The framework was evaluated o…

Neurophysiological Signatures of Negative Symptom Improvement After High-Definition Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation: A Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation-Electroencephalography Study.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia remains a major health challenge, partly because conventional antipsychotics show limited efficacy for negative symptoms. High-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) may improve these symptoms, but its neurophysiological mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS: This study included two phases. First, 103 patients with schizophrenia and 76 healthy controls underwent transcranial magnetic stimulation combined with electroencephalography (TMS-EEG) to assess cortical excitation and inhibition; patients also completed PANSS assessments. Second, patients we…

Near-peer learning in neurology residency: a 6-year experience comparing knowledge gains across cerebrovascular, electromyography, and electroencephalography modules.

BACKGROUND: Near-peer learning (NPL) may address challenges in neurology residency training, but its comparative efficacy across subspecialties with different cognitive demands remains unclear. METHODS: The authors conducted a six-year longitudinal study evaluating a structured NPL curriculum within a neurology residency program. The study included residents who participated in three modules: cerebrovascular disease (CVD), electromyography (EMG), and electroencephalography (EEG). Knowledge gains were assessed using pre- and post-course examinations. Linear mixed-effects models with Bonferroni …

Electroencephalography signatures of motor error and stimulus-driven attention in electrical muscle stimulation-induced wrist movements under motor imagery.

This study examines how electroencephalography (EEG) signatures are modulated during passive movements induced by electrical muscle stimulation (EMS). Specifically, we focused on three key factors: (1) motor errors, (2) stimulus-driven attention, and (3) cognitive conditions (motor imagery and waiting). We tested how error-related neural responses are modulated by the mismatch between predictions and actual sensory inputs during motor imagery. To this end, we introduced a wrist-movement paradigm combining motor imagery with EMS. Participants either imagined wrist dorsiflexion toward visual tar…

Electroencephalography-functional magnetic resonance imaging using a familial temporal lobe epilepsy model in cats: an exploratory methodological pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Reliable methods for identifying the epileptogenic zone (EZ) in veterinary medicine remain limited. Although intracranial electroencephalography (EEG) is considered the most dependable approach for EZ localization, noninvasive simultaneous EEG and functional magnetic resonance imaging (EEG-fMRI) has been applied in human medicine as an alternative. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: Develop and evaluate EEG-fMRI methodology for clinical application in veterinary medicine and evaluate the methodological feasibility of EEG-fMRI using cats with familial spontaneous epilepsy (FSECs). ANIMALS: Te…

Individualized Spectral Features in First-Episode and Drug-Naïve Major Depressive Disorder: Insights From Periodic and Aperiodic Electroencephalography Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The detection of abnormal brain activity plays an important role in the early diagnosis and treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD). Recent studies have shown that the decomposition of the electroencephalography (EEG) spectrum into periodic and aperiodic components is useful for identifying the drivers of electrophysiologic abnormalities and avoiding individual differences. METHODS: In this study, we aimed to elucidate the pathological changes in individualized periodic and aperiodic activities and their relationships with the symptoms of MDD. EEG data in the eyes-closed rest…

Mechanistic study of saltiness enhancement induced by three characteristic volatiles identified in Jinhua dry-cured ham using electroencephalography (EEG).

Excessive salt intake is a pressing food health issue, and odor-induced saltiness enhancement (OISE) is a novel strategy for targeted salt reduction. Understanding the neural mechanisms of OISE is essential for salt reduction. In this study, the mechanism of saltiness enhancement induced by three volatile organic compounds (VOCs) identified in Jinhua dry ham was investigated in 20 panelists using electroencephalography (EEG). The study demonstrated that VOCs enhanced salty taste perception, primarily through low-frequency brain waves. Source localization revealed occipital lobe activation duri…

Post-Operative Cognitive Dysfunction in Elderly Patients Receiving Propofol Sedation for Gastrointestinal Endoscopies: An Observational Study Utilizing Processed Electroencephalography.

BACKGROUND: Propofol sedation is commonly administered during gastrointestinal (GI) procedures. The Patient State Index (PSI) is a processed electroencephalography (EEG) parameter obtained with the SedLine® Sedation Monitoring system (Masimo Corporation, Irvine, CA). When used to objectively assess the patient's level of consciousness, PSI may provide a more effective, safer titration of sedation during GI procedures. We hypothesize that having more or longer episodes of deep sedation as assessed by PSI (i.e., PSI<26) would correlate with developing new-onset or worsening post-operative cognit…

The patent foramen ovale may alter migraine brain activity: A pilot study of electroencephalography spectrum and functional connectivity analysis.

BACKGROUND: A link has been shown between patent foramen ovale (PFO) and migraine, particularly migraine with aura. However, it is unknown if PFO might cause migraine by altering cortical excitability and neural network, which may lower the threshold of cortical spreading depression (CSD). This study aims to compare the spectrum power and functional connectivity of the alpha and beta bands of electroencephalography (EEG) across migraine patients with and without PFO. METHODS: Thirty-five migraine patients with PFO (PFO +), 35 migraine patients without PFO (PFO -) and 20 PFO patients without m…

Phase and amplitude electroencephalography correlations change with disease progression in people with idiopathic rapid eye-movement sleep behavior disorder.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Increased phase synchronization in electroencephalography (EEG) bands might reflect the activation of compensatory mechanisms of cognitive decline in people with neurodegenerative diseases. Here, we investigated whether altered large-scale couplings of brain oscillations could be linked to the balancing of cognitive decline in a longitudinal cohort of people with idiopathic rapid eye-movement sleep behavior disorder (iRBD). METHODS: We analyzed 18 patients (17 males, 69.7 ± 7.5 years) with iRBD undergoing high-density EEG (HD-EEG), presynaptic dopaminergic imaging, and clini…

Correlations between cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers, neurocognitive tests, and resting-state electroencephalography (rsEEG) in patients with HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders.

HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) are highly prevalent in people living with HIV (PLWH) despite successful treatment with combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). HAND pathogenesis is complex and definitive surrogate biomarkers are not clearly defined. Brain function has been assessed through the evaluation of cortical source rhythms with delta waves associated with neurological impairment. The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between EEG cortical sources, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers, and neurocognitive tests in PLWH with HAND. PLWH with HAND without sign

Psychometric properties of infant electroencephalography: Developmental stability, reliability, and construct validity of frontal alpha asymmetry and delta-beta coupling.

Resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) provides developmental neuroscientists a noninvasive view into the neural underpinnings of cognition and emotion. Recently, the psychometric properties of two widely used neural measures in early childhood-frontal alpha asymmetry and delta-beta coupling-have come under scrutiny. Despite their growing use, additional work examining how the psychometric properties of these neural signatures may change across infancy is needed. The current study examined the developmental stability, split-half reliability, and construct validity of infant frontal alpha a…
