Despite lack of supporting evidence from epidemiologic studies and/or confirmed case reports over the last 30 years, maps in non-specialist works on tropical medicine as well as in documents from specialized organizations (e.g. WHO) systematically include Congo and Gabon, two French-speaking countries, within the zone of endemic filariasis due to Wuchereria bancrofti. One certainty is that no cases were found in field studies carried out in these countries in the late 1970s and 1980s but unfortunately published only in French. Studies that we carried out in the Congo between 1982 and 1987 as p

Lymphoedema is a symptom of a malfunctioning lymphatic system. It is characterised by chronic swelling caused by the accumulation of lymph. Rebecca Penzer examines the nursing management of lymphoedema and the ways in which non-specialist nurses can offer support and promote self-care in patients with this potentially debilitating condition.

An investigation of lymphatic filariasis vectors in Malawi is reported. Anopheles funestus, A. arabiensis, and A. gambiae sensu stricto had high rates of filarial infection (2.2-3.1%) and carried infective larvae. Anopheles funestus was the predominant species collected (77.6%) and was the primary vector during the study period of April to May 2002.

Human filariasis caused by lymphatic dwelling nematodes, affecting 120 million persons worldwide, is a major public health problem. Efforts towards development of vaccines for such large tissue-dwelling nematodes depends significantly on identification and demonstration of protective immunity in the exposed population. Immunological studies conducted in human filariasis so far are essentially attempts to establish a correlation of the immune response phenotypes with presence or absence of filarial infections/disease in the host, and the cause-effect relationship between the observed immune res

The global initiatives to eliminate lymphatic filariasis as a public health problem by the year 2020 have generated a great deal of debate in India, the largest endemic country. This has led to a shift in the focus from control to elimination of the disease. Although the campaign to eliminate filariasis has begun, much more needs to be done. Several recent research studies have provided an insight into various operational issues and prospects of elimination of lymphatic filariasis. In this article, the current scenario, recent research results, logistics and the prospects of eliminating lympha

This paper is a review of lymphatic bancroftian filariasis in the State of Pernambuco. Brazil. It shows that reports have existed since the 1st decade of the century. Knowledge of the disease in several areas during different periods makes a retrospective analyses very interesting, particularly in Great Recife. It is in the city that the epidemiological and control aspects of the diseases are examinations in details.

Lymphatic filariasis is the most widespread of human filarial infections, a group of vector-borne infestations. After the discovery of diethylcarbamazine (DEC), little advance was made in the development of new chemotherapeutic agents for the treatment of lymphatic filariasis until 1985. Since then, several new initiatives have occurred as the result of a global effort by the World Bank/UNDP/WHO Special Programme on Tropical Diseases and the Onchocerciasis Control Programme. Some of these global research initiatives are reviewed in this paper. Recent observations throw a new light on the ratio

Acute lymphatic filariasis developed in an American traveling recreationally to Asia. The illness was characterized by fatigue, eosinophilia, and lymphedema of the arm and chest wall, but no lymphangitis, lymphadenitis, or pain. Complete resolution occurred over 1-2 years. We discuss this syndrome and describe the use of new diagnostic tests in its diagnosis and management.

The transmission role of the residual microfilaremia cases was studied in Pingle Village, Liangqing Township, Yongning County where bancroftian filariasis had been virtually eradicated during 1984-1988. The results indicated that after the microfilarial rate of the human population met the criterion of elimination of filariasis, namely below 1% of the total population in all the administrative villages, and the average density of microfilaria being around 5 per 60 microliters peripheral blood, subsequent control measures might be no longer instituted while the microfilaria rate and its density
