Fear-potentiated startle response is unrelated to social or emotional functioning in adolescents with autism spectrum disorders.

It has been suggested that atypical amygdala function contributes to the social impairments characteristic of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Previous research has demonstrated that adolescents and adults with ASD generate normal response during a fear-potentiated startle paradigm, suggesting this aspect of amygdala function is intact and may not account for the social dysfunction associated with the condition. The amygdala also plays a crucial role in the expression of anxiety and may contribute to high rates of reported anxiety in individuals with ASD. The present study partially replicate

Social skills groups for people aged 6 to 21 with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).

BACKGROUND: Since autism was first described, major difficulties in social interaction have been a defining feature of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Social skills groups are a common intervention for individuals with ASD. Although a frequently recommended practice, the few studies that have addressed the efficacy of social skills groups have shown mixed results. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness of social skills groups for improving social competence, social communication, and quality of life for people with ASD who are six to 21 years of age. SEARCH METHODS: We

An immersive virtual peer for studying social influences on child cyclists' road-crossing behavior.

The goal of our work is to develop a programmatically controlled peer to bicycle with a human subject for the purpose of studying how social interactions influence road-crossing behavior. The peer is controlled through a combination of reactive controllers that determine the gross motion of the virtual bicycle, action-based controllers that animate the virtual bicyclist and generate verbal behaviors, and a keyboard interface that allows an experimenter to initiate the virtual bicyclist's actions during the course of an experiment. The virtual bicyclist's repertoire of behaviors includes road f

Negative emotion-driven impulsivity predicts substance dependence problems.

Impulsivity is predominant among users of several drugs of abuse including alcohol, cocaine, and amphetamines, and it is considered a risk factor for later development of alcohol and substance abuse and dependence. However, there is little consensus on how impulsivity should be defined and measured, and there are few studies on the relationship between separate dimensions of impulsivity and substance dependence. We used a multidimensional measure of impulsivity (the UPPS scale) to examine differences between 36 individuals with substance dependence (ISD) and 36 drug-free controls on the dimens

[Cultivating "non-technical skills" in surgeons].

Surgical operations are one of the high-risk activities in modern society, and surgeons in this high-pressure environment require not only excellent technical skills but also well-rounded non-technical skills. Non-technical skills encompass key abilities such as situational awareness, decision-making, communication and teamwork, leadership, and stress management, as well as the capacity for error correction feedback loops, emotional intelligence, and adaptability to complex environments. These "soft skills" help surgeons to more effectively handle emergencies during surgery, optimize team coll…

Emerging Personality Pathology in Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Clinical Correlates and Assessment Implications.

The link between neurodevelopmental and psychiatric conditions is increasingly recognized in developmental psychiatry, yet the relationship between Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Personality Disorders (PDs) remains underexplored in adolescence. Dysfunctional personality traits (DPT) may emerge in individuals with ASD, especially when diagnosis is delayed and comorbidities occur. This study assessed 79 adolescents (mean age = 15.15 ± 1.50; 45.6% females) with ASD without intellectual disability using a multimodal protocol (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Second Edition [ADOS-2], Auti

Subjective norms of paintings: Integrating perceptual, cognitive, and emotional dimensions.

Artworks, such as paintings, are frequently utilized as stimuli in research and interventions. However, the complexity of their perceptual, emotional, and cognitive properties necessitates rigorous validation to ensure the reliability of research outcomes and the efficacy of their application in real-world contexts. A few studies have already established norms for paintings. Still, the type of stimuli (e.g., artificial intelligence [AI]-generated) and the comprehensiveness of the assessed dimensions may not entirely capture the complexity of human-made ecological artworks. The current study es

Neural mechanisms of imitation and 'mirror neuron' functioning in autistic spectrum disorder.

An association between autistic spectrum disorder and imitative impairment might result from dysfunction in mirror neurons (MNs) that serve to relate observed actions to motor codings. To explore this hypothesis, we employed a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) protocol previously used to identify the neural substrate of imitation, and human MN function, to compare 16 adolescent males of normal intelligence with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) and age, sex and IQ matched controls. In the control group, in accord with previous findings, we identified activity attributable to MNs in a

Chronic pain patients are impaired on an emotional decision-making task.

Chronic pain can result in anxiety, depression and reduced quality of life. However, its effects on cognitive abilities have remained unclear although many studies attempted to psychologically profile chronic pain. We hypothesized that performance on an emotional decision-making task may be impaired in chronic pain since human brain imaging studies show that brain regions critical for this ability are also involved in chronic pain. Chronic back pain (CBP) patients, chronic complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) patients, and normal volunteers (matched for age, sex, and education) were studied o

Preventive aspects of mental retardation.

Estimates of the incidence of mental retardation vary from 1 to 3 per cent of the population. Prevention of this disability requires different methods, depending on the cause. Retarded persons are of four broad categories: Those who are the low end of the normal distribution curve of intelligence in the general population, without any specific illness or defect; those in whom retardation is culturally and socially determined; those who are functionally retarded due to emotional disorder; and those with damage of the brain structure. More flexibility is required within our relatively complex so

Wearable Triboelectric Sensors Based on High-Performance Au/TPU Nanofiber Electrodes for Object Recognition, Emotion Recognition, and Wireless Real-Time Robot Control.

Highly conductive and stretchable nanofibers are promising material candidates for wearable devices. However, traditional electrode materials are limited by their tensile strain, rigid material, and impermeability, which often deteriorates the performance of their flexible wearable sensors. Herein, a wearable triboelectric sensor (WTS) based on a highly conductive, stretchable, and breathable Au/TPU nanofiber electrode is developed for object recognition, emotion recognition, and wireless real-time robot control. After Au nanoparticles are uniformly deposited on the surface of TPU nanofibers t
