This study explored the immediate effect of 20 days of climatotherapy at the Dead Sea on quality of life, coping with the disease, general well-being and individual stress levels in a group of 71 patients with vitiligo and 42 matched controls. The authors describe a new method of the treatment of patients with trigeminal neuralgias using electroconvulsive therapy. The method is based on the increase of beta-endorphin concentration as a result of electroconvulsive treatment. The treatment of 12 patients in accordance with the suggested method provided beneficial results and significant enhancement of the efficacy of therapy as compared to patients undergoing conventional treatment.

The involvement of endogenous opioid peptides in the antihypertensive action of acutely administered clonidine, a centrally acting adrenergic agonist, was studied in humans. Eight hypertensive subjects received clonidine 0.2 mg orally, naloxone 8 mg i.v. followed by a 0.13 mg/min infusion, and both drugs together on separate days. Clonidine resulted in a significant decrease in mean blood pressure, which was not affected by concomitant treatment with naloxone. Naloxone alone or with clonidine caused significant elevations in plasma aldosterone, not mediated by increased plasma renin activity.

The effect of Morphiceptin (H-Tyr-Pro-Phe-Pro-NH2) on opioid inhibition of field stimulated rat vas deferens (RVD) was studied. The morphiceptin was found to produce a weak inhibition of the twitch response of the RVD. In addition morphiceptin antagonized full agonists acting on the same receptor system (i.e. beta-endorphin selective antagonist for the delta receptor system of RVD by virtue of being a weak partial agonist.

The relationship between premenstrual tension syndrome and dietary intake was studied in a population of 20 young adult women. Caloric intake was measured during the 10 days preceding and following the menstrual cycle. Those women with more severe symptoms recorded a greater increase in caloric intake. Caloric intake during the premenstrual period also increased with age. It is hypothesized that this caloric intake may be due to increased beta-endorphin levels.

We studied the hormonal responses to a generalized tonic-clonic convulsion in 20 patients with idiopathic or posttraumatic epilepsy (6 patients) or alcohol-withdrawal seizures (14 patients).
