Development of a new miniaturized system for ultrafiltration.

Acute decompensated heart failure and fluid overload are the most common causes of hospitalization in heart failure patients, and often, they contribute to disease progression. Initial treatment encompasses intravenous diuretics although there might be a percentual of patients refractory to this pharmacological approach. New technologies have been developed to perform extracorporeal ultrafiltration in fluid overloaded patients. Current equipment allows to perform ultrafiltration in most hospital and acute care settings. Extracorporeal ultrafiltration is then prescribed and conducted by special

Why animals can outrun robots.

Animals are much better at running than robots. The difference in performance arises in the important dimensions of agility, range, and robustness. To understand the underlying causes for this performance gap, we compare natural and artificial technologies in the five subsystems critical for running: power, frame, actuation, sensing, and control. With few exceptions, engineering technologies meet or exceed the performance of their biological counterparts. We conclude that biology's advantage over engineering arises from better integration of subsystems, and we identify four fundamental obstacl

Multi-target field control for matrix gradient coils.

OBJECTIVE: Conventional single-target field control for matrix gradient coils will add control complexity in MRI spatial encoding, such as designing specialized fields and sequences. This complexity can be reduced by multi-target field control, which is realized by optimizing the coil structure according to target fields. METHODS: Based on the principle of multi-target field control, the X, Y and Z gradient fields can be set as target fields, and all coil elements can then be divided into three groups to generate these fields. An improved simulated annealing algorithm is proposed to optimize

An EM-Tracked Approach for Calibrating the 3D Pose of Flexible Endoscopes.

Flexible endoscopes are ideal instruments for visualizing and diagnosing the inner surfaces of organs via a minimally invasive incision. Calibrating a flexible endoscope is a troublesome yet inevitable process in image-based tools tracking. Aiming to simplify the calibration process, we propose an electromagnetic (EM)-tracked calibration approach that does not require any predefined poses of the EM sensor. A three-stage calibration protocol was presented in an extensor. First, the orientation of the endoscope tube was derived by conducting a circular rotation of the endoscope around its axis u

Research on dynamic urine volume detection system based on smart flexible textile sensors.

Urine leakage volume is an important indicator reflecting the severity of incontinence in patients. Currently, there are limited smart diapers capable of continuous dynamic monitoring of urine volume. This study developed two types of urine volume sensors, resistive and capacitive, which were integrated with traditional diapers to assess urine leakage levels: mild leakage (0-5 mL), moderate leakage (6-12 mL), and severe leakage (above 12 mL). Three patterns of resistive urine volume sensors were designed, and the results showed that the A pattern could accurately determine urine volume and fre

Preliminary Study of a Capacitive Diaper Sensor System for Urine Absorption Estimation.

Disposable adult diapers are used in medical and nursing care for people with dementia or bedridden patients who are unable to go to the toilet by themselves because of incontinence. To determine if a diaper needs to be changed, the blanket must be turned up, clothing removed, and the diaper opened for inspection. Several studies and products detect urination in diapers. However, most of them are specialized for urination detection, and it is not easy to evaluate the urination time and voided volume. Thus, we are developing a capacitive diaper sensor system that allows nurses and caregivers to

[Design and application of a new type of biliary-intestinal nutrient tube].

The establishment of a nutritional pathway is the premise and basis of nutritional therapy for patients with malignant tumor. The nasogastric tube, nasoenteric tube, and percutaneous endoscopic gastric/jejunostomy are commonly used clinical pathways for enteral nutrition (EN) therapy. However, these EN pathways are often difficult to establish in patients with malignant obstructive jaundice (MOJ) with pyloric or duodenum primary obstruction. For this reason, a new type biliary-intestinal nutrient tube placed through percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography drainage (PTCD) pathway was designed

DITES: A Lightweight and Flexible Dual-Core Isolated Trusted Execution SoC Based on RISC-V.

A Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) is an efficient way to secure information. To obtain higher efficiency, the building of a dual-core system-on-chip (SoC) with TEE security capabilities is the hottest topic. However, TEE SoCs currently commonly use complex processor cores such as Rocket, resulting in high resource usage. More importantly, the cryptographic unit lacks flexibility and ignores secure communication in dual cores. To address the above problems, we propose DITES, a dual-core TEE SoC based on a Reduced Instruction Set Computer-V (RISC-V). At first, we designed a fully isolated mu

SATA-LRS: A modular and novel steerable hand-held laparoscopic instrument platform for low-resource settings☆.

BACKGROUND: Hospitals in low resource settings (LRS) can benefit from modern laparoscopic methodologies. However, cleaning, maintenance and costs requirements play a stronger role while training and technology are less available. Steerable laparoscopic instruments have additional requirements in these settings and need extra identified adaptations in their design. METHOD: Several modular detachability and tip steerability features were applied to the SATA-LRS instrument platform designed specifically for LRS. Ten subjects participated a dis- and reassembly experiment to validate the modularit

Design, Analysis and Experimental Validation of a Novel 7-Degrees of Freedom Instrument for Laparoscopic Surgeries.

Laparoscopic surgery is widely used for treating intra-abdominal conditions involving the gallbladder, pancreas, liver, intestines and reproductive organs. Conventional laparoscopy instruments used in manual surgeries usually have straight shafts and four degrees of freedom (DOF) plus grasping. However, these are insufficient for the complete rotation of the instrument tip. This makes it challenging to access difficult-to-reach organs inside the abdomen during the surgeries. A few robotic instruments available in the market have higher maneuverability but are expensive. Instruments incorporati

Research on Vibration Reduction Performance of Electromagnetic Active Seat Suspension Based on Sliding Mode Control.

Vehicle seats have a significant impact on the comfort of passengers. The development of seats is a field in which scholars are widely concerned. In this study, we add an electromagnetic levitation structure and design a new active seat suspension based on the passive seat suspension. Then, simulation research is carried out based on a C-level road surface combined with integral sliding mode control and state feedback control. The results show that both state feedback control and integral sliding mode control positively affect vehicle seat vibration reduction, and integral sliding mode control

Learning-Based Slip Detection for Robotic Fruit Grasping and Manipulation under Leaf Interference.

Robotic harvesting research has seen significant achievements in the past decade, with breakthroughs being made in machine vision, robot manipulation, autonomous navigation and mapping. However, the missing capability of obstacle handling during the grasping process has severely reduced harvest success rate and limited the overall performance of robotic harvesting. This work focuses on leaf interference caused slip detection and handling, where solutions to robotic grasping in an unstructured environment are proposed. Through analysis of the motion and force of fruit grasping under leaf interf

Stiffness-Tunable Soft Gripper with Soft-Rigid Hybrid Actuation for Versatile Manipulations.

Highly flexible and environmentally adaptive soft robots have received considerable attention. There remains a demand for soft robots to realize the stiffness modulation and variable workspace for robust and versatile manipulations. This article presents a compact soft gripper with a polylactic acid-based variable stiffness module (VSM) and a rigid retractable mechanism to achieve soft-rigid hybrid actuation. The soft gripper can enhance its stiffness by 18-fold without sacrificing flexibility due to the VSM. A heating circuit is designed to divide the VSM into three regions. Each region can b

A hydraulic soft microgripper for biological studies.

We have developed a microscale hydraulic soft gripper and demonstrated the handling of an insect without damage. This gripper is built on Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with the soft material casting technique to form three finger-like columns, which are placed on a circular membrane. The fingers have a length of 1.5 mm and a diameter of 300 µm each; the distance between the two fingers is 600 µm of center-to-center distance. A membrane as a 150 µm soft film is built on top of a cylindrical hollow space. Applying pressure to the interior space can bend the membrane. Bending the membrane causes th

Stabilizing interventional instruments in the cardiovascular system: A classification of mechanisms.

Positioning and stabilizing a catheter at the required location inside a vessel or the heart is a complicated task in interventional cardiology. In this review we provide a structured classification of catheter stabilization mechanisms to systematically assess their challenges during cardiac interventions. Commercially available, patented, and experimental prototypes of catheters were classified with respect to their stabilizing mechanisms. Subsequently, the classification was used to define requirements for future cardiac catheters and persisting challenges in catheter stabilization. The clas

Three-Fingered Soft Pneumatic Gripper Integrating Joint-Tuning Capability.

Compared with traditional rigid grippers, soft grippers are made of lightweight and soft materials and have the characteristics of flexible contact and strong adaptability, which are widely utilized to grasp fragile objects with complex contours and shapes. In this article, we design and fabricate a three-fingered stiffness-tunable soft gripper by integrating the joint-tuning capability. The soft fingers are composed of an internal bending actuator and an external fiber-jamming jacket, under an actuation of pneumatic pressure. Static and kinematic models are established to detect the bending a

Constructing and measuring domain-specific emotions for affective design: a descriptive approach to deal with individual differences.

Assessing design solutions via domain-specific emotions has been widely concerned and explored in the field of affective design. However, the examination and accommodation of individual differences have not been settled sufficiently in the literature. To address this research gap, this paper proposes a descriptive approach to draw calibrated collective emotion patterns in survey-based affective design assessment. A 'Repertory Grid Interview linked with Rate-All-That-Apply' (RGI/RATA) procedure is firstly conducted to elicit and code the individual's personal emotional descriptions into mid-lev

Scalability of Sterilizing-Grade Filters in Different Filtration Modes.

Scalability of filter throughput in normal flow filtration runs is an important consideration in the development of biopharmaceutical downstream processes. Depending on the filtration mode used, filter device geometry can significantly affect scalability. In this study, scaling of different polyethersulfone sterilizing-grade filters was performed in two filtration modes-at constant flow and at constant pressure-using a particulate model solution as well as a cell-free mAb solution as a representative example. Both filtration methods were compared regarding their practicability as well as their
