Central nervous system effects of H1-receptor antagonists in the elderly.

BACKGROUND: The potential adverse central nervous system effects of H1-receptor antagonists have not been optimally studied in the elderly. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that newer H1-receptor antagonists such as cetirizine and loratadine would cause less central nervous system dysfunction than the older H1-receptor antagonists diphenhydramine and chlorpheniramine in this population, as they do in younger subjects. METHODS: We performed a randomized, double-blind, single-dose, placebo-controlled, 5-way crossover study in 15 healthy elderly subjects (mean age 71 +/- SD 5 years). On study days at

Neurotoxic effects of aluminium among foundry workers and Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: In a cross-sectional case-control study conducted in northern Italy, 64 former aluminium dust-exposed workers were compared with 32 unexposed controls from other companies matched for age, professional training, economic status, educational and clinical features. The findings lead the authors to suggest a possible role of the inhalation of aluminium dust in pre-clinical mild cognitive disorder which might prelude Alzheimer's disease (AD) or AD-like neurological deterioration. METHODS: The investigation involved a standardised occupational and medical history with particular attent

The effects of childhood disruptive disorder comorbidity on P3 event-related brain potentials in preadolescents with ADHD.

The present study examined the degree to which the P300 component of the visual brain event-related potential and associated task performance deficits often observed in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are attributable to comorbid childhood disruptive disorders using a community sample of 11-year olds from the Minnesota Twin Family Study. Subjects were divided into "ADHD-pure" (ADHD without oppositional defiant disorder, ODD, or conduct disorder, CD), "ADHD-comorbid" (ADHD with ODD or CD), and comparison (no childhood disruptive disorder) groups using DSM-III-R dia

Low doses of LSD reduce broadband oscillatory power and modulate event-related potentials in healthy adults.

RATIONALE: Classical psychedelics, including psilocybin and lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), are under investigation as potential therapeutic agents in psychiatry. Whereas most studies utilize relatively high doses, there are also reports of beneficial effects of "microdosing," or repeated use of very low doses of these drugs. The behavioral and neural effects of these low doses are not fully understood. OBJECTIVES: To examine the effects of LSD (13 μg and 26 μg) versus placebo on resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) and event-related potential (ERP) responses in healthy adults. METHO

Neurophysiological Correlates of the Near-Miss Effect in Gambling.

The near-miss effect in gambling refers to a losing situation that is (or perceived to be) close to a win by the gambler. This effect is one of the many cognitive distortions that can occur during gambling games. The main objective of the present study was to analyze the electrophysiological correlates of the near-miss effect via an event-related potential (ERP) study examining four distinct gambling outcomes: win, full miss, near-miss before the payline, and near-miss after the payline. This study comprised 23 healthy voluntary participants (10 women) with ages ranging between 19 and 34 years

P300 Source Localization Contrasts in Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors and Tic Disorders.

Tic disorders (TD) and body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRB) have similar phenotypes that can be challenging to distinguish in clinical settings. Both disorders show high rates of comorbid psychiatric conditions, dysfunctional basal ganglia activity, atypical cortical functioning in the prefrontal and motor cortical regions, and cognitive deficits. Clinicians frequently confound the two disorders and it is important to find reliable objective methods to discriminate TD and BFRB. Neuropsychological tests and event-related potential (ERP) studies have yielded inconsistent results regarding a

EEG-ERP Correlates of Cognitive Dysfunction in Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) has been shown to affect the psychological and cognitive status of a woman. However, amidst various conflicting reports in this regard, very few studies attempted to assess these aspects objectively using electroencephalography (EEG) and event-related potential (ERP). PURPOSE: To assess changes in neurocognitive and psychological parameters of PCOS women without any other comorbidities. METHODS: PCOS women aged 18 years to 35 years, diagnosed from obstetrics and gynecology OPD who are otherwise free of any other comorbidities, were assessed for

Auditory Oddball Responses Across the Schizophrenia-Bipolar Spectrum and Their Relationship to Cognitive and Clinical Features.

OBJECTIVE: Neural activations during auditory oddball tasks may be endophenotypes for psychosis and bipolar disorder. The authors investigated oddball neural deviations that discriminate multiple diagnostic groups across the schizophrenia-bipolar spectrum (schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, psychotic bipolar disorder, and nonpsychotic bipolar disorder) and clarified their relationship to clinical and cognitive features. METHODS: Auditory oddball responses to standard and target tones from 64 sensor EEG recordings were compared across patients with psychosis (total N=597; schizophrenia,

Neuroelectrophysiological approaches in heroin addiction research: A review of literatures.

Neuroelectrophysiological properties have been used in human heroin addiction studies. These studies vary in their approach, experimental conditions, paradigms, and outcomes. However, it is essential to integrate previous findings and experimental methods for a better demonstration of current issues and challenges in designing such studies. This Review examines methodologies and experimental conditions of neuroelectrophysiological research among heroin addicts during withdrawal, abstinence, and methadone maintenance treatment and presents the findings. The results show decrements in attentiona

Evaluation of cholinergic treatment in demented patients by P300 evoked related potentials.

Centrally acting cholinesterase inhibitors (ChEls) improve cognitive functions in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other forms of dementia. Evaluation of treatment efficacy is based mainly on subjective assessment tools which includes standardized neuropsychological tests. Therefore, an additional objective tool for the evaluation of drug response is necessary. Thirty two patients were treated with ChEls for dementia (tacrine 19, donepezil 5, rivastigmine 8). Cognitive response was assessed before ChEls (baseline) and after 26 weeks, as optimal tolerated doses were achieved and maintained (endpoin

The brain's orienting response (novelty P3) in patients with unilateral temporal lobe resections.

The brain's orienting response is a biologically primitive, yet critical cognitive function necessary for survival. Though based on a wide network of brain regions, the lateral prefrontal cortex and posterior hippocampus are thought to play essential roles. Indeed, damage to these regions results in abnormalities of the novelty P3 or P3a, an event-related potential (ERP) sign of the orienting response. Like other ubiquitous markers of orienting, such as the galvanic skin response, the P3a habituates when novel events are repeated. Here, we assessed habituation of the P3a in patients who had un

Effects of Transcendental Meditation practice on brain functioning and stress reactivity in college students.

This randomized controlled trial investigated effects of Transcendental Meditation (TM) practice on Brain Integration Scale scores (broadband frontal coherence, power ratios, and preparatory brain responses), electrodermal habituation to 85-dB tones, sleepiness, heart rate, respiratory sinus arrhythmia, and P300 latencies in 50 college students. After pretest, students were randomly assigned to learn TM immediately or learn after the 10-week posttest. There were no significant pretest group differences. A MANOVA of students with complete data (N=38) yielded significant group vs treatment inter

Effects of dual-task training in patients with post-stroke cognitive impairment: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Evidence for the efficacy of cognitive-motor dual-task (CMDT) training in patients with post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) and no dementia is still lacking. More importantly, although some studies on the cognitive effect of CMDT training show an improvement in cognitive performance, the results are still controversial, and the intervention mechanism of CMDT training on cognitive function improvement is not clear. The main purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of CMDT training on cognitive function, neuron electrophysiology, and frontal lobe hemodynamics in patients

Magnitude comparison and automaticity in number processing in adolescents with prenatal alcohol exposure: An event-related potentials study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders may exhibit a distinct pattern of dysmorphic facial features, growth restriction, and cognitive deficits, particularly in arithmetic. Magnitude comparison, a fundamental element of numerical cognition, is modulated by the numerical distance effect, with numbers closer in value more difficult to compare than those further apart, and by the automaticity of the association of numerical values with their symbolic representations (Arabic numerals). METHODS: We examined event-related potentials acquired during the Numerical Stroop numeri

Implications of depressive mood in OSAHS patients: insights from event-related potential.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is a chronic breathing disorder characterized by recurrent upper airway obstruction during sleep. Although previous studies have shown a link between OSAHS and depressive mood, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying mood disorders in OSAHS patients remain poorly understood. This study aims to investigate the emotion processing mechanism in OSAHS patients with depressive mood using event-related potentials (ERPs). METHODS: Seventy-four OSAHS patients were divided into the depressive mood and non-depressive mood groups according t
