Copper and ceruloplasmin (Cp) concentrations during the acute inflammatory process in the rat.

We have measured the concentration of copper and ceruloplasmin in serum of rats with carrageenan foot-oedema and in serum and exudate of rats with carrageenan pleurisy. Both serum copper and ceruloplasmin were found to increase in both models of inflammation. In these experimental conditions we have shown a strong positive correlation between copper and ceruloplasmin, in the serum of both normal and inflamed rats.

Tuberculous meningitis--a CT study.

This study comprises 60 cases of tuberculous meningitis including both adults and children. Only three cases showed a normal scan. Severe hydrocephalus was present in 87.09% children and only 12.09% adults. The incidence of hydrocephalus increased with the duration of the illness and decreased with age. Exudates in the basal cisterns were graded from mild to severe, the latter being seen only in children. Visible infarcts were shown in 28.33% of cases, 10% showed associated parenchymal tuberculomas. Cytologic studies for the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.

Endoscopically obtained fluid from the ampulla of Vater was subjected to cytologic examination in 141 of 159 patients with suspected pancreatic disease, most of whom were undergoing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) examination. Of 26 patients with proven carcinoma of the pancreas, cannulation of the ampulla was successful in 22, and in 12 of these the cytology was positive (54%). One hundred and twelve eyes of 103 patients were analyzed during a 9 1/2-year period after surgical drainage of a choroidal (ciliochoroidal) detachment (CD). Choroidal detachment in five groups of postoperative patients was studied. CD after surgery for cataract, for cataract and glaucoma, and for glaucoma alone had different time courses, but in all of these, there were similar amounts of protein (67% of plasma protein concentration) in the suprachoroidal fluid (SCF). [Clinical significance of diamine oxidase (DAO) in serous effusions of neoplastic and non neoplastic origin (author's transl)].

Diamine oxidase (DAO) levels were investigated in pleural and ascitic fluids of 142 patients suffering from neoplastic and non neoplastic diseases. While in serous effusions of non neoplastic origin or of neoplastic origin (but non containing neoplastic cells) DAO levels were similar to serum levels; in the malignant fluids containing cells of epithelial origin, DAO was very elevated and largely superior to serum values. This results seems to be of practical importance for diagnostic purposes because points out the presence of carcinomatous cells in the effusions.

Continuous intraperitoneal antibiotic lavage in the management of purulent sepsis of the pelvis.

Fourteen patients with generalized purulent peritonitis of gynecologic origin were treated intraoperatively and postoperatively by continuous peritoneal lavage with an antibiotic solution in conjunction with conventional surgical management. Lavage was maintained for a period of 16 to 36 hours. This proved to be a safe and highly effective method. No major complications were encountered.

There are two extreme types of middle ear effusion leading to hearing loss (a) a rubber-like effusion seen in secretory otitis media and (b) a water-like effusion seen in serous otitis media. This study analysed clinical features and laboratory investigations in 145 patients with tuberculous peritonitis diagnosed by peritoneoscopy at this hospital between 1984 and 1988.
