Automatic pain classification in older patients with hip fracture based on multimodal information fusion.

Given the limitations of unimodal pain recognition approaches, this study aimed to develop a multimodal pain recognition system for older patients with hip fractures using multimodal information fusion. The proposed system employs ResNet-50 for facial expression analysis and a VGG-based (VGGish) network for audio-based pain recognition. A channel attention mechanism was incorporated to refine feature representations and enhance the model's ability to distinguish between different pain levels. The outputs of the two unimodal systems were then integrated using a weighted-sum fusion strategy to c

Re-examination of the role of the human acoustic stapedius reflex.

The "rollover" seen in the word recognition performance scores of patients with Bell's palsy (facial nerve paralysis) has historically been taken as an indicator of the role of the stapedius reflex in the protection from upward spread of masking. Bell's palsy, however, may be a polyneuropathy, so it is not clear that the poor word recognition performance at high levels is necessarily attributable specifically to impaired facial nerve function. The present article reports two new experiments that probe whether an isolated impairment of the stapedius reflex can produce rollover in word recogniti

Historical considerations of the diagnosis and treatment of facial pain.

Most forms of facial pain remain neurologic disorders that, although not life threatening, can be debilitating. Modern descriptions of the various forms of facial pain according to their clinical and anatomic patterns did not develop until after the contributions of the early modern neuroanatomists and physiologists in the first quarter of the nineteenth century. These contributions allowed the recognition of relatively distinct painful afflictions of the face, and permitted surgeons in the late nineteenth century to embark confidently on a variety of approaches to cranial and peripheral nerve

Social-cognitive difficulties in former users of methamphetamine.

OBJECTIVES: Methamphetamine (MA) abuse is associated with neurocognitive impairment. We investigated whether important aspects of social-cognitive function are similarly disrupted. METHODS: A total of 12 adults with a history of MA dependence (average duration of use, 3.9 years), currently engaged in rehabilitation and abstinent for an average period of 6 months, and 12 MA naive participants completed measures of facial affect recognition, theory of mind, executive function and memory. RESULTS: MA users were impaired on the measures of facial affect recognition and theory of mind (ds = 1.75

Imagery and perception in acquired prosopagnosia: Functional variants and their relation to structure.

Current models of face perception and the face-processing network suggest that acquired prosopagnosia may not be a single disorder but rather a family of variants differing in mechanism. It has been proposed that tests of face perception and face imagery can probe component processes to support apperceptive, associative, and amnestic distinctions. However, validating this proposal is hampered by the rarity of this condition. Here we report observations gathered over two-and-a-half decades on the perception of facial shape and the imagery for famous faces of twenty-three patients. Patients with

Prosopagnosia is highly comorbid in individuals with probable developmental coordination disorder.

Developmental co-ordination disorder (DCD) is characterised by difficulties in motor control and coordination from early childhood. While problems processing facial identity are often associated with neurodevelopmental conditions, such issues have never been directly tested in adults with DCD. We tested this possibility through a range of tasks and assessed the prevalence of developmental prosopagnosia (i.e. lifelong difficulties with faces), in a group comprising individuals who self-reported a diagnosis of, or suspected that they had, DCD. Strikingly, we found 56% of this probable DCD group

Flowers in the Attic: Lateralization of the detection of meaning in visual noise.

The brain is a slave to sense; we see and hear things that are not there and engage in ongoing correction of these illusory experiences, commonly termed pareidolia. The current study investigates whether the predisposition to see meaning in noise is lateralized to one hemisphere or the other and how this predisposition to visual false-alarms is related to personality. Stimuli consisted of images of faces or flowers embedded in pink (1/f) noise generated through a novel process and presented in a divided-field paradigm. Right-handed undergraduates participated in a forced-choice signal-detectio

Laterality for recognizing written words and faces in the fusiform gyrus covaries with language dominance.

Recognizing words and faces engages highly specialized sites within the middle fusiform gyrus, known as the visual word form area (VWFA) and fusiform face area (FFA) respectively. The VWFA and FFA have clear but opposite population-level asymmetries, with the VWFA typically being lateralized to the left and the FFA to the right hemisphere. The present study investigates how language dominance may relate to these asymmetries. We hypothesize that individuals with left hemisphere dominance for word production (i.e., left language dominance, LLD) will have typical lateralization for word and face

The role of experience-based perceptual learning in the face inversion effect.

Perceptual learning of the type we consider here is a consequence of experience with a class of stimuli. It amounts to an enhanced ability to discriminate between stimuli. We argue that it contributes to the ability to distinguish between faces and recognize individuals, and in particular contributes to the face inversion effect (better recognition performance for upright vs inverted faces). Previously, we have shown that experience with a prototype defined category of checkerboards leads to perceptual learning, that this produces an inversion effect, and that this effect can be disrupted by A

Embodied emotion impairment in Huntington's Disease.

Theories of embodied cognition suggest that perceiving an emotion involves somatovisceral and motoric re-experiencing. Here we suggest taking such an embodied stance when looking at emotion processing deficits in patients with Huntington's Disease (HD), a neurodegenerative motor disorder. The literature on these patients' emotion recognition deficit has recently been enriched by some reports of impaired emotion expression. The goal of the study was to find out if expression deficits might be linked to a more motoric level of impairment. We used electromyography (EMG) to compare voluntary emoti

Face affect recognition deficits in personality-disordered offenders: association with psychopathy.

BACKGROUND: There is a limited literature examining face affect recognition in offenders. In line with the Integrated Emotion Systems (IES) model, existing studies suggest a psychopathy-related deficit in sad/fear recognition. However, many of these studies have small samples, and few include a healthy control group in order to examine the contribution of criminality. METHOD: We compared the performance of male criminals with dissocial (antisocial) personality disorder (PD group) and healthy male IQ-matched controls, on a morphed face affect-processing task and examined the relationship betwe

"The Butcher on the Bus" Is Less Familiar to Older Adults Than She Is to Younger Adults.

OBJECTIVES: The "butcher on the bus" is a term describing recognizing someone as familiar but failing to recollect how we know them. Previous studies probing this phenomenon have not used paradigms that mimic real life, and age-related differences have not been adequately addressed. METHODS: In two studies, younger and older adults studied faces in scene contexts a variable number of times. In the test phases, studied faces were presented identical to the study phase, new faces were presented with new scenes, or studied faces were presented in a different context. In Study 1, this different c

A Serious Games Platform for Cognitive Rehabilitation with Preliminary Evaluation.

In recent years Serious Games have evolved substantially, solving problems in diverse areas. In particular, in Cognitive Rehabilitation, Serious Games assume a relevant role. Traditional cognitive therapies are often considered repetitive and discouraging for patients and Serious Games can be used to create more dynamic rehabilitation processes, holding patients' attention throughout the process and motivating them during their road to recovery. This paper reviews Serious Games and user interfaces in rehabilitation area and details a Serious Games platform for Cognitive Rehabilitation that inc

Voice-associated static face image releases speech from informational masking.

In noisy, multipeople talking environments such as a cocktail party, listeners can use various perceptual and/or cognitive cues to improve recognition of target speech against masking, particularly informational masking. Previous studies have shown that temporally prepresented voice cues (voice primes) improve recognition of target speech against speech masking but not noise masking. This study investigated whether static face image primes that have become target-voice associated (i.e., facial images linked through associative learning with voices reciting the target speech) can be used by lis

Craniofacial Injury Patterns and Predictors for Pediatric Non-Accidental Trauma.

BACKGROUND: Non-accidental pediatric craniofacial trauma (NAT) requires prompt recognition and treatment to ensure optimal patient outcomes and prevent recurrence. However, there are limited comprehensive analyses contrasting pediatric non-accidental to accidental trauma (AT). This study aimed to identify distinct injury patterns, demographic factors, and outcomes that characterize NAT in the pediatric facial trauma population. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the National Trauma Data Bank from 2017 to 2019, identifying pediatric patients (0-18 years) with facial injuries. NA

Social Skills and Emotion Recognition in Children With Elevated Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome Symptoms: A Comparative Study With Children Diagnosed With ADHD and Typically Developing Peers.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome (CDS) is increasingly viewed as a distinct childhood condition. Although it overlaps with ADHD in some features, emerging evidence suggests a unique behavioral and cognitive profile. However, research examining social functioning and emotion recognition in children with pure CDS remains limited. METHODS: This study compared social competence and facial emotion recognition abilities among children aged 8 to 12 years across three groups: those with elevated CDS symptoms (n = 43), those with ADHD (n = 40), and healthy controls (n = 43). Social function

Subthalamic nucleus oscillations during facial emotion processing and apathy in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is primarily characterized by motor symptoms, but patients also experience a relatively high prevalence of non-motor symptoms, including emotional and cognitive impairments. While the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is a common target for deep brain stimulation to treat motor symptoms in PD, its role in emotion processing is still under investigation. This study examines the subthalamic neural oscillatory activities during facial emotion processing and its association with affective characteristics. METHODS: Twenty PD patients who underwent subthalamic deep brai

Alexithymia predicts face emotion perception after acquired brain injury.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the presence and level of alexithymia and examined the relationship between alexithymia and affect recognition abilities after acquired brain injury (ABI), accounting separately for etiology due to stroke or traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: Ninety-nine neurologically healthy adults (NHA) and 119 adults with moderate-to-severe ABI (63 TBI, 56 stroke) participated. Main measures included the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20 (TAS-20) and Multicultural Facial Emotion Perception Test (MFEPT). RESULTS: ABI groups endorsed greater alexithymia than NHA, but TBI

Right-hemisphere lateralisation evidenced from the chimeric face task predicts self-reported social competencies.

Observing and understanding faces is a critical component of social interactions. The neural correlates of face processing have been well established to be preferentially lateralised to the right hemisphere, though the functional role of this brain asymmetry has received less attention. Here we investigated the hypothesis that a left-visual-field (right-hemisphere) bias in face perception would be associated with a broader set of self-reported social competencies. Participants (n = 348) completed a chimeric face task, requiring judgements of which side of chimeric face stimuli were more emotio

Mind reading dysfunctions in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea: A neuropsychological approach.

Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is a prevalent sleep-related breathing disorder that has been extensively studied for its effects on cognitive functions. However, little attention has been given to investigating Mind Reading (MR) skills in patients with OSAS. In this study, we employed a neuropsychological approach to thoroughly assess various facets of MR skills in patients with OSAS. Forty-two patients with untreated moderate or severe OSAS (AHI ≥15; 30 men, 12 women) and 16 healthy controls (7 men and 9 women), matched by age, were enrolled. To assess MR skills, we used: (i) The St
