Clinicopathologic characteristics of familial versus sporadic papillary thyroid carcinoma.

It is unclear whether familial non-medullary thyroid carcinoma (FNMTC) is more aggressive than sporadic carcinoma, and its prevalence is still under debate. In this study, we investigated the clinicopathologic features of familial papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) compared with its sporadic counterpart. We used data from our hospital between 2008 and 2014 to compare the features of 24 familial PTC with 80 sporadic PTC. The prevalence of familial PTC was 1.5%; 25% of familial PTC exhibited a parent-offspring relationship, and 75% exhibited a sibling relationship. There were significant differen

Familial juvenile hyperuricemic nephropathy: detection of mutations in the uromodulin gene in five Japanese families.

BACKGROUND: Familial juvenile hyperuricemic nephropathy (FJHN) is an autosomal-dominant disease characterized by hyperuricemia of underexcretion type, gout, and chronic renal failure. We previously reported linkage on chromosome 16p12 in a large Japanese family designated as family 1 in the present study. Recent reports on the discovery of mutations of the uromodulin (UMOD) gene in families with FJHN encouraged us to screen UMOD mutations in Japanese families with FJHN, including family 1. METHODS: Six unrelated Japanese families with FJHN were examined for mutations of the UMOD gene by direc

[Mental health of mothers of children with cancer treated in Pediatric Oncology at the mother and child hospital in Ivory Coast].

Scientific literature has shown that the management of pediatric cancer affects the mental health of parents. We therefore undertook this research to describe the psychosocial experiences of mothers of children with cancer in Ivory Coast. This mixed, cross-sectional, prospective, descriptive and analytical study involved 30 mothers of children with cancer. In terms of socio-demographic characteristics, the mothers surveyed had an average age of 39.37 years, and 83.4% of them were living as a couple. A proportion of 66.7% were employed. All had more than one child, except for one mother. Psycho

Assessing the Needs of Military-Connected Children and Resources to Address Those Needs.

There is a growing concern around the mental and behavioral health of children and youth as such conditions as anxiety disorders, depression … lives of children and youth, military-connected children and youth face distinct challenges-such as family separation and frequent moves-that can directly or indirectly affect children's mental health and exacerbate an already stressful time in their development. To help inform an ongoing commitment to military-connected children and youth, the Office of the Deputy …

Depression in left-behind adolescents from single-parent families: a nomogram based on multidimensional risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a significant issue affecting adolescents' mental health. While depression research is relatively extensive, studies focusing on left-behind adolescents from single-parent families remain limited. Due to their unique family structure, this group is more susceptible to multiple stressors, increasing their risk of depression. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to construct a predictive model based on a nomogram to identify the multidimensional characteristics of depression risk among left-behind adolescents from single-parent families, providing theoretical and practical evide

Reimagining Supportive Approaches at the Intersection of Mandatory Reporting Policies for the Mother-Infant Dyad Affected by Substance Use.

BACKGROUND: As rates of substance use during pregnancy persist, the health and optimal development of infants with prenatal substance exposure remain a key priority. Nurses are tasked with identifying and reporting suspected cases of child maltreatment, including abuse and neglect, which is often assumed to be synonymous with substance use during pregnancy. While policies aimed at protecting infants from child abuse and neglect are well intentioned, literature regarding the short- and long-term social and legal implications of mandatory reporting policies is emerging. PURPOSE: In this article

Chaperone-Mediated Autophagy Protein BAG3 Negatively Regulates Ebola and Marburg VP40-Mediated Egress.

Ebola (EBOV) and Marburg (MARV) viruses are members of the Filoviridae family which cause outbreaks of hemorrhagic fever. The filovirus VP40 matrix protein is essential for virus assembly and budding, and its PPxY L-domain motif interacts with WW-domains of specific host proteins, such as Nedd4 and ITCH, to facilitate the late stage of virus-cell separation. To identify additional WW-domain-bearing host proteins that interact with VP40, we used an EBOV PPxY-containing peptide to screen an array of 115 mammalian WW-domain-bearing proteins. Using this unbiased approach, we identified BCL2 Associ

Deletion of an enhancer near DLX5 and DLX6 in a family with hearing loss, craniofacial defects, and an inv(7)(q21.3q35).

Precisely regulated temporal and spatial patterns of gene expression are essential for proper human development. Cis-acting regulatory elements, some located at large distances from their corresponding genes, play a critical role in transcriptional control of key developmental genes and disruption of these regulatory elements can lead to disease. We report a three generation family with five affected members, all of whom have hearing loss, craniofacial defects, and a paracentric inversion of the long arm of chromosome 7, inv(7)(q21.3q35). High resolution mapping of the inversion showed that th

The role of psychosocial and biological variables in separating chronic and non-chronic major depression and early-late-onset dysthymia.

Psychosocial (sociodemographic characteristics, loss and separation and family atmosphere in childhood, recent life events) and biological (family history, DST, TRH-test) variables were investigated in 180 patients with Major Depression (MD) and Dysthymic Disorder (DD). The aim of the study was to reveal certain differences between the chronic and non-chronic course of MD and the early- and late-onset subtypes of dysthymia. When comparing the two course patterns of MD, a higher rate of malignant tumours among first-degree relatives, a greater number of long-lasting stress situations before the

Immunohistochemical localization of rat submandibular gland esterase B (homologous to the RSKG-7 kallikrein gene) in relation to other serine proteases of the kallikrein family.

The rat submandibular gland contains several members of the kallikrein family. In the present study we purified and raised an antiserum against one of these enzymes, i.e., esterase B, which was first described by Khullar et al. in 1986. N-terminal amino acid analysis revealed complete homology between esterase B and the kallikrein family gene RSKG-7. For characterization of the antiserum, flat-bed isoelectrofocusing with immunoblotting was superior to immunoelectrophoresis and double immunodiffusion in detecting and identifying crossreacting proteins. This was due to the fact that kallikrein-l

The syndromes described by Kanner and Rett-Hagberg: overlap in an extended family.

An extended family is reported in which Rett-Hagberg syndrome, autism with mild ataxia and autism with profound mental retardation occurred separately in three female second-cousins. The authors suggest alternative explanations for the possible association between autism and Rett-Hagberg syndrome: that they may be closely related genetic disorders, or that they may constitute relatively homogeneous phenotypes with several possible aetiologies.

Blunt duct adenosis: a separate entity from columnar cell lesions?

Blunt duct adenosis (BDA) is a breast lesion first described by Foote and Stewart in 1945 as a proliferative benign lesion of the terminal duct lobular unit. Throughout recent decades, further literature descriptions of BDA have been confusing. Some consider BDA to be a separate entity, some a growth pattern of columnar cell changes. The WHO 2012 considered BDA and columnar cell changes to be synonyms, while columnar cell lesions, especially those with atypia, are part of a spectrum of early precursors of the low nuclear grade breast neoplasia family. In the updated WHO 2019 version, BDA is me

Including expectant fathers in antenatal education programmes in Istanbul, Turkey.

In this article we present the results of three studies investigating methods for including men in antenatal education in Istanbul, Turkey. Participants were first-time expectant parents living in low and middle-income areas. After a formative study on the roles of various family members in health during the period surrounding a first birth, an antenatal-clinic-based education programme for women and for couples was carried out as a randomised, controlled study. Based on the results, separate community-based antenatal education programmes for expectant mothers and expectant fathers were tested

Mosaic variegated aneuploidy with multiple congenital abnormalities: homozygosity for total premature chromatid separation trait.

Separation of chromatids of all mitotic chromosomes, here called total premature chromatid separation (total PCS), was observed in 67 to 87.5% of repeated cultures of peripheral blood lymphocytes from two unrelated infants. Also noted was a variety of mosaic aneuploidies, especially trisomies, double trisomies, and monosomies, to be called mosaic variegated aneuploidy. The infants both showed severe pre- and postnatal growth retardation, profound developmental retardation, uncontrollable seizures, severe microcephaly, hypoplasia of the brain, Dandy-Walker anomaly, abnormal facial appearance, a

Congenital conductive or mixed deafness, preauricular sinus, external ear anomaly, and commissural lip pits: an autosomal dominant inherited syndrome.

Branchiogenic syndromes such as branchio-oto-renal syndrome, Treacher Collins syndrome, and hemifacial microsomia are well delineated. From a clinical study in a large family spanning three generations, it can be concluded that the association of conductive deafness, commissural lip pits, preauricular sinuses, and external ear anomalies can be differentiated from the above-mentioned syndromes and is a separate autosomal dominant syndrome.

Screen positive rates among six family history screening protocols for breast/ovarian cancer in four cohorts of women.

It has been estimated that approximately 2% of the general population has a family history that is indicative of hereditary breast/ovarian cancer. We aim to further document the proportions of women identified by several protocols as having a positive family history of breast/ovarian cancer, as a prelude to offering genetic counseling and BRCA1/2 mutation testing. This is a critical component of the evidence base needed when considering implementation of family history screening in primary care. We apply six separate family history screening protocols for breast/ovarian cancer to four cohorts

Familial occurrence of oral submucous fibrosis: report of eight families from northern Kerala, south India.

BACKGROUND: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is an archetype of pathological fibrosis due to possibly its presence for centuries amongst people of Indian ethnic extraction. The WHO criteria for a precancerous condition accords well with this disease. The fact that the disease has been reported in at least few subjects who do not practice the habit of areca nut chewing and the inability to prove a dose-effect relationship in almost all cases, the question arose whether there is a predisposition for the disease. METHODS: A house- to-house survey was carried out in northern Kerala, South India, for

Mutation of the FOXC2 gene in familial distichiasis.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the FOXC2 gene in a family with hereditary distichiasis. BACKGROUND: Distichiasis, ie, a second row of eyelashes arising from the meibomian glands of the eyelids, can be inherited either alone (Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man [OMIM] no. 126300) or, more commonly, as part of the lymphedema-distichiasis (LD) syndrome (OMIM no. 153400). More than 45 families with mutations in the FOXC2 gene and LD have been described. Both lymphedema and distichiasis are highly penetrant. Distichiasis without lymphedema is not commonly seen. METHODS: We examined three generations of a
