[Can men be included in the population subjected to puerperal psychosis? A case report].

INTRODUCTION: Puerperal psychosis (PP) is a psychiatric disorder that occurs in 1 out of 1000 pregnancies. Well known since antiquity, its symptoms have often been described in mothers, but few studies have successfully investigated a related disorder in fathers. The characteristic of this pathology is more related to its appearance than to its semiological description which is why its nosographic place is always discussed. The objective here is to focus on the definition of PP and to suggest an entity for both genders. CASE REPORT: Our case report focused on the clinical description of an ei

Parental reports of behavioural outcome among paediatric leukaemia survivors in Malaysia: a single institution experience.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the behavioural impact of chemotherapy in survivors of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) treated with chemotherapy only and to identify treatment-related or sociodemography-related factors that might be associated with behavioural outcome. METHODS: We examined 57 survivors of childhood ALL, who were off treatment for at least 2 years and were in remission, aged 4-18 years, and 221 unrelated healthy controls. The Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL) parent report was used either in English or in Bahasa Malaysia (the national language of Malaysia) to assess the behavioura

Sexual abuse perpetrated by adult and juvenile females: an ultimate attempt to resolve a conflict associated with maternal identity.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to report the descriptive and phenomenological aspects of adult females (AF) and juvenile females (JF) who sexually abuse children and adolescents. A major focus is to study the relational problems during childhood and adulthood of this specific population and how they echo the relational aspects of their own victimization. METHODOLOGY: Since 1992, clinical and evaluative data were collected from a sample of 13 AF and 15 JF who had committed sexual abuse. The subjects were evaluated in the program for adult and adolescent sex offenders at the outpatie

Associations between childhood cancer and ionizing radiation: results of a population-based case-control study in Germany.

In order to investigate the associations between sources of exposure to ionizing radiation and childhood cancer in Germany, a matched case-control study including children under the age of 15 years was conducted. Cases were identified from the German Childhood Cancer Registry; controls came from population registration offices. Exposure was assessed via questionnaires and parental interviews. The study comprises 1184 leukemia cases, 234 non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, 940 solid tumors, and 2588 controls. Preconception parental occupational exposures were positively but not statistically significantly

Juvenile parricide in Turkey: Forensic psychiatric perspectives on child abuse, family violence, and fatal outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile parricide- defined as the killing of a parent by a child or adolescent -is a rare but devastating form of family violence, often rooted in chronic abuse, emotional dysregulation, and untreated psychiatric conditions. Despite its severity, systematic research remains limited, particularly in non-Western contexts. OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study examined the forensic psychiatric, sociodemographic, clinical, and offense-related characteristics of juvenile parricide offenders (JPOs) in Türkiye and identified factors associated with fatal outcomes, victim identity, weapon

Older siblings as supervisors: does this influence young children's risk of unintentional injury?

Unintentional injury is a leading cause of death and hospitalization of young children. Many of these injuries occur in the home when children presumably are being supervised. This study focused on the under-explored issue of sibling supervision in the home, drawing on data collected from a sample of Canadian mothers. Mothers in this sample completed a structured telephone interview and mailed back questionnaires to provide information about the nature and extent of sibling supervision that occurs in the home, as well as the younger child's injury history. Results indicated that older siblings

"He won't be my son": Middle Eastern Muslim men's discourses of adoption and gamete donation.

In the Sunni Muslim world, religious mandates prohibit both adoption and gamete donation as solutions to infertility, including in the aftermath of in vitro fertilization (IVF) failures. However, both of these options are now available in two Middle Eastern countries with significant Shi'ite Muslim populations (Iran and Lebanon). On the basis of fieldwork in multisectarian Lebanon, I examine in this article attitudes toward both adoption and gamete donation among childless Muslim men who are undertaking IVF with their wives. No matter the religious sect, most Muslim men in Lebanon continue to

From 'neurotic' to 'managing' mother: The 'medical career' experienced by mothers of a child diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.

Objective Despite increased research into how caring for a child diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) affects mothers, more needs to be known about ways in which such experiences transform their lives. Insight into the experiences of such mothers was sought through analysis of interviews with eight mothers and one father caring for a child with JIA. Design The study is situated within a larger project involving families with a child with JIA. A social constructionist approach was adopted and grounded theory including a 'negative case,' guided gathering and analysing data. Individ

How to create a family? Decision making in lesbian couples using donor sperm.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the decisions lesbian couples make when creating a family through donor insemination [DI] and to explore the negotiations between the biological and the non-biological mother. METHODS: We included 18 lesbian parents (9 biological and 9 non-biological mothers) with at least one child (7-10 years old) conceived through anonymous DI. We conducted in-depth semi-structured couple interviews at the participants' homes or at the Department of Reproductive Medicine of Ghent University Hospital (Belgium) where participants were treated in the past. The data were analysed using s

Communication patterns and role structure in families of male schizophrenics a study using automated techniques.

Observers used automated methods to code who spoke to whom (Who-to-Whom) while families (mother, father, son) of 30 schizophrenics, 13 psychiatrically hospitalized nonschizophrenic controls, and 26 normal controls interacted on four tasks. From the Who-to-Whom data, measures of activity, channels of communication, and other variables were derived. Clear patterns of dominance were found in families of schizophrenics with fathers most and sons least active, while activity was more evenly distributed among family members in both control groups. The mother-son channel of communication was used mor

Maternal asthma symptoms during pregnancy on child behaviour and executive function: A Bayesian phenomics approach.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal history of inflammatory conditions has been linked to offspring developmental and behavioural outcomes. This phenomenon may be explained by the maternal immune activation (MIA) hypothesis, which posits that dysregulation of the gestational immune environment affects foetal neurodevelopment. The timing of inflammation is critical. We aimed to understand maternal asthma symptoms during pregnancy, in contrast with paternal asthma symptoms during the same period, on child behaviour problems and executive function in a population-based cohort. METHODS: Data were obtained from 8

Poor father-child relationships and more distress in turn predicted poorer health status. There was no interaction between exposure to parent conflict and time with father; thus, more time with father was beneficial in both high- and low-conflict families, and more exposure to …

Attention to infants in the first year.

The time spent by 158 infants in contact with their carers at 6, 13, 26 and 52 weeks was reviewed prospectively. Periods of contact in the categories of (1) physical care, (2) holding the crying or sleeping infant, and (3) playing and interacting with the infant were recorded using 24-h log diaries completed by the mother. The mean total carer contact time over a 24-h day did not change significantly in the first year, varying between 6.5 and 73 h. Between 6 and 52 weeks, time spent by the mother in physical care declined significantly from 207 to 143 min and in holding the crying or sleeping

Risk and resistance factors associated with paternal adjustment to obstetrical brachial plexus injuries.

This study aimed to identify risk and resistance factors associated with the psychological adjustment of fathers of children with obstetrical brachial plexus injuries (OBPI). Participants were 34 fathers of children with OBPI recruited from an Australian OBPI clinic. Measures completed were OBPI severity, disability related stress, family functioning and social support. Together the risk and resistance factors of severity and family functioning accounted for 28% of the total variance in paternal psychological adjustment. Family functioning explained 12% of the variance in psychological adjustm

The long reach of adversity: Intermediary pathways from maternal adverse childhood experiences to child socio-emotional and cognitive outcomes.

BACKGROUND: This longitudinal study with multi-informant (maternal, paternal, and experimenter) and multimethod (questionnaires, behavioral observations, and standardized assessments) data tests an intergenerational model from mothers' adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) to their children's socio-emotional and cognitive outcomes. METHODS: Participants were 501 children (50.7% male) and caregivers (56.5% white) followed from child age 2 months to 5 years. Mothers reported on their ACEs, as well as their postnatal socio-economic status (SES), marital conflict, and depressive symptoms. Observer

Intrafamilial neurological phenotypic variability due to either biallelic or monoallelic pathogenic variants in CACNA1A.

Pathogenic heterozygous variants in CACNA1A are associated with familial hemiplegic migraine, episodic ataxia type 2 and spinocerebellar ataxia type 6, and more recently, neurodevelopmental disorders. We describe a severe, early-onset phenotype including severe muscular hypotonia, early-onset epileptic seizures, apnoea, optic atrophy and dysphagia in three siblings carrying compound heterozygous frameshift variants in CACNA1A. Two male patients died at the age of 5 or 14 months of suspected SIDS or severe developmental epileptic encephalopathy (DEE) with refractory seizures and apnoea. A male

[Fatal child abuse (caused by physical violence) in Germany during 1 January 1985 to 2 October 1990. Results of a multicenter study].

UNLABELLED: No reliable data are available on cases of lethal child abuse (by active force) in the area of Federal Republic of Germany prior to reunification (the former West Germany). In a multicenter study we therefore examined the police and court records for such cases occurring in the period 1 January 1985 to 2 October 1990 in nearly the entire area of Federal Republic of Germany. RESULTS: The study center received information on 58 cases of lethal child abuse. Extrapolated to all institutes of legal medicine, this corresponds to 62 cases in all of West Germany in the period studied. An
