Phylogenetic analysis of lice infested chicken (Gallus gallus domisticus) with new records in Kurdistan of Iraq.

The domestic chickens are the most important protein sources of human populations in every part of the world; many parasites' species may affect birds. Ectoparasites can be found practically in all birds. They feed on their body components like blood, feathers. The effects of louse parasitism on birds are often severe, including retarded growth, low egg production and susceptibility to other infections and due to lice possess chewing mouthpart, it feeds on dry skin scales, scab tissues, and feather parts and it causes skin irritation and sucks blood (anemia), discomfort, loss of plumage, and d…

High susceptibility of magpie (Pica pica) to experimental infection with lineage 1 and 2 West Nile virus.

West Nile virus (WNV), a zoonotic pathogen naturally transmitted by mosquitoes whose natural hosts are birds, has spread worldwide during the last few decades. Resident birds play an important role in flavivirus epidemiology, since they can serve as reservoirs and facilitate overwintering of the virus. Herein, we report the first experimental infection of magpie (Pica pica) with two strains of West Nile virus, lineages 1 (NY-99) and 2 (SRB Novi-Sad/12), which are currently circulating in Europe. Magpies were highly susceptible to WNV infection, with similar low survival rates (30% and 42.8%) f

Egg production and welfare of laying hens kept in different housing systems (conventional, enriched cage, and free range).

The aim of this study was to compare egg production performance and welfare traits of laying hens kept in conventional cage (CC), enriched cage (EC), and free range (FR). Lohmann Brown laying hens (n = 480 with 160 per housing type) were studied across a production cycle from placement at 17 wk until depopulation at 66 wk. The hens were randomly allocated into cages or pens of housing system groups; within each system there were four replicates with 40 hens in each pen or cage. The hen day egg production (P = 0.037), feed intake (FI) (P < 0.001), egg mass (EM) (P < 0.001), and dirty egg ratio

[Effects of the environment on health of feral pigeons (Columba livia)].

We examined 80 feral pigeons and their fecal samples from two feral pigeon lofts of the "Pigeon Action of Basel" (Switzerland) for different pathogens. The tested material harbored four pathogenic agents transmissible to humans (Chlamydia spp., Salmonella spec., Campylobacter jejuni, Cryptococcus neoformans) In addition several pathogens were found which are no zoonotic agents but potentially pathogenic for the pigeons themselves, such as Trichomonas gallinae, coccidia, helminths, ectoparasites and fungi. The number of pathogens and parasites detected in the fecal samples varied significantly

Response of naked neck (Nana) and normal (nana) broiler chickens to dietary energy levels in a subtropical climate.

1. The comparative response of naked neck (Nana) broiler chickens and their normally feathered (nana) full sibs to varied dietary energy lev … creasing dietary energy had a positive influence on AR of DM, CP and EE. 5. The relative weights of feathers and skin were lower in Nana chickens than in their normal counterparts. Ready-to-cook yields were greater at the high dietary energy content, while abdominal fat increased with increasing energy content. Nana chickens had more skin protein and less …

A case of pulmonary cryptococcosis with large pericardial effusion diagnosed using cervical lymph node biopsy.

Pulmonary cryptococcosis (PC) is a relatively rare infectious disease. It mainly involves the lungs; however, in some patients, the infection could spread to other parts of the body. PC mostly occurs in patients with immune deficiencies. However, PC infections have been reported in non-immunocompromised patients. The diagnosis of PC is challenging in patients without immune deficiencies. Here, the case of a 27-year-old immunocompetent woman who was diagnosed with PC was report. She had unexplained fever and a history of close contact with poultry feathers. Lesions were observed in the lungs, p…

Tyrosine Hydroxylase-Immunopositive Cells and Melanin in the Mesencephalon of Yugan Black-Bone Fowl.

BACKGROUND: The Yugan blackbone fowl (YBF) is a special poultry with hyperpigmentation in various organs, including feather. However, the mechanism of hyperpigmentation is limited, and the melanic information of other organs except skin is rare. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: In this study, we attempt to get an insight of the mechanism of melanogenesis of birds. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The mesencephalon of YBF was observed by light microscopy with hematoxylineosin and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: The TH immunopositive cells were found in the mesencephalon. Moreover, the mel

[A case of bird related hypersensitivity pneumonitis had a progressive course].

A 50-year-old woman was admitted due to productive cough continuing for 3 years. A chest computed tomography showed appearance of nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP). Thoracoscopic lung biopsy specimens showed mainly a pattern of NSIP with multinucleated cells and cholesterol clefts. She was not a bird fancier, but had indirect exposure to birds in her living environment, and had been using feather-filled duvets for a long time. We established a diagnosis of bird-related hypersensitivity pneumonitis based on antibodies in serum positive to pigeon dropping extracts. She was treated by coa

The behavioural and physiological stress responses are linked to plumage coloration in the rock pigeon (Columbia livia).

In wild vertebrates, conspicuousness often signals a high phenotypic quality and is therefore associated with fitness benefits ("the handicap principle hypothesis"). However, conspicuous individuals usually face a higher risk of predation because they are easier to detect. Therefore, conspicuous individuals are expected to modify their behavioural and their physiological stress responses to limit the negative effect of their conspicuousness on survival. We examined the link between plumage coloration and the stress response in a bird species (the rock pigeon, Columbia livia) by comparing two g

Social huddling and physiological thermoregulation are related to melanism in the nocturnal barn owl.

Endothermic animals vary in their physiological ability to maintain a constant body temperature. Since melanin-based coloration is related to thermoregulation and energy homeostasis, we predict that dark and pale melanic individuals adopt different behaviours to regulate their body temperature. Young animals are particularly sensitive to a decrease in ambient temperature because their physiological system is not yet mature and growth may be traded-off against thermoregulation. To reduce energy loss, offspring huddle during periods of cold weather. We investigated in nestling barn owls (Tyto al

Description of the life stages of quill mite Mironovia lagopus sp. nov. (Acari: Syringophilidae) parasitizing the rock ptarmigan Lagopus muta (Phasianidae) from Iceland.

A new species of syringophilid mites, Mironovia lagopus sp. nov. (Acari: Syringophilidae) is described from feather quills of the rock ptarigman Lagopus muta (Montin) (Phasianidae) from Iceland. Females of this new species differ from the closely related Mironovia rouloul Skoracki and Sikora by setae d2, which are subequal or 1.1-1.2 times shorter than setae e2 (vs. d2 1.4-1.5 times longer than e2 in Mironovia rouloul) and by setae ag1, which are 1.3-1.5 times shorter than ag2 (vs. ag1 1.7-1.8 times shorter than ag2). The postembryonic stages of this new species are figured and described in de

Mercury in wetland birds of Iran and Iraq: contrasting resident moorhen, Gallinula chloropus, and migratory Common Teal, Anas crecca, life strategies.

We document mercury distribution in tissues of two waterfowls; moorhen (Gallinula chloropus; n=6), and Common Teal (Anas crecca; n=6) from Shadegan wetlands in Southwestern Iran. Mean value of mercury in moorhen liver was (0.36 Hg microg g(-1) dry weight), Common Teal had (4.34 Hg microg g(-1) dry weight) mercury. In all tissues, Common Teals had significantly higher mercury concentrations than moorhens (U test, p <or= 0.05). Mercury was 12, 9, 8, and 6 times higher in liver, muscle, kidney, and feather of Common Teals. These birds have comparable diets but Common Teals are migratory and moorh

Avian extremity reconstruction via osseointegrated leg-prosthesis for intuitive embodiment.

For large avians such as vultures, limb loss leads to loss of ambulation and eventually death from malnutrition. Prosthetic devices may replace the limb, however, conventional prosthetic sockets are not feasible in feathered limbs and the extreme stress and strain of unreflected daily use in animals. Osseointegration is a novel technique, where external prosthetic parts are connected directly to a bone anchor to provide a solid skeletal-attachment. This concept provides a high degree of embodiment since osseoperception will provide direct intuitive feedback allowing natural use of the limb in

The emergence of the ectodysplasin pathway.

The genes coding for the proteins of the ectodermal dysplasin pathway, EDA, EDAR and EDA2R are found in genomes of animals that long predate vertebrates. We show that EDA, EDAR and EDA2R are expressed in the sea anemone. A fourth gene in the pathway, EDARADD, only appears with the cyclostomes. With the appearance of EDARADD, the ectodermal dysplasin system was now complete, and the skin appendages emerged, first in the form of the cyclostome's keratinized proto-teeth, until finally, feathers and then mammalian hair and eccrine glands evolved. We elaborate on the specific roles of the ectoderma…

Cysteic Acid in Dietary Keratin is Metabolized to Glutathione and Liver Taurine in a Rat Model of Human Digestion.

Poultry feathers, consisting largely of keratin, are a low-value product of the poultry industry. The safety and digestibility of a dietary protein produced from keratin (KER) was compared to a cysteine-supplemented casein-based diet in a growing rat model for four weeks. KER proved to be an effective substitute for casein at 50% of the total dietary protein, with no changes in the rats' food intake, weight gain, organ weight, bone mineral density, white blood cell counts, liver glutathione, or blood glutathione. Inclusion of KER in the diet reduced total protein digestibility from 94% to 86% …

Mercury in the body of the most commonly occurring European game duck, the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos L. 1758), from northwestern Poland.

The aim of this study was to determine the concentration of mercury (Hg) in liver (L), kidney (K), breast muscle [BM (musculus pectoralis major)], breast feathers (BF), and stomach contents (SC) of mallard (Anas platyrhynchos L. 1758). Among the edible parts of mallard, the greatest concentrations of Hg were observed in K and L, although they did not exceed 1.5 mg/kg dry weight (dw). Average concentrations in K, L, and BM were 0.27, 0.25, and 0.13 mg/kg dw, respectively. Significant correlations were observed between Hg concentrations in BM and K and in BM and L (r s = 0.92) as well as between…

Pathogenicity of CL-1 chicken anemia agent.

Twelve-day-old broiler-type chickens had hemorrhagic necrotic wing tips. After 10 blind subcultures in an MDCC-MSB1 cell line, a virus (so-called chick anemia agent [CAA]) was isolated and designated CL-1 CAA. Five-day-old specific-pathogen-free chicken embryos from a commercial breeder flock that were found not to possess antibody against CAA were infected with CL-1 virus via yolk-sac injection. Many (49%) infected embryos were small and apparently had died from severe systemic hemorrhage. Hatched chicks were small and had pale feathers, skin, skeletal muscles, bone marrow, and viscera. All i…

The effect of triamcinolone on the development of the bursa of Fabricius in chick embryos.

Triamcinolone acetonide (TAC), a long-acting synthetic glucocorticoid, markedly reduces survival rates in chick embryos when injected in small (10--100 ng) single-injection doses on days 5 or 9 of incubation. In addition to its embryotoxic effect, TAC causes such gross malformations as gastroschisis, reduced body weight, encephalocele, micrognathia, curled toes, and club feathers. These effects of TAC are more severe in 5-day-old chick embryos than in 9-day-old ones. A comparison with cortisol (hydrocortisone), a structurally similar, naturally occurring steroid, indicates that TAC is approxim…
