Taphonomic signatures of early scavenging by black and turkey vultures.

Scavenging is critical for nutrient cycling and maintenance of healthy ecosystems. While there is substantial research into the identification of taphonomic signatures from facultative mammalian scavengers, early stage scavenging signatures by vultures remain unknown. Further, some vulture species are opportunistic predators, highlighting the need to define signatures observed in the course of normal scavenging behavior. We placed stillborn neonatal calves in an unoccupied pasture and used motion-trigger camera traps to quantify scavenging effort, then conducted necropsies to evaluate the effe

Linking hunting weaponry to attack strategies in sailfish and striped marlin.

Linking morphological differences in foraging adaptations to prey choice and feeding strategies has provided major evolutionary insights across taxa. Here, we combine behavioural and morphological approaches to explore and compare the role of the rostrum (bill) and micro-teeth in the feeding behaviour of sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) and striped marlin (Kajikia audax) when attacking schooling sardine prey. Behavioural results from high-speed videos showed that sailfish and striped marlin both regularly made rostrum contact with prey but displayed distinct strategies. Marlin used high-spee

Orthogonality in Principal Component Analysis Allows the Discovery of Lipids in the Jejunum That Are Independent of Ad Libitum Feeding.

Ad libitum feeding of experimental animals is preferred because of medical relevance together with technical and practical considerations. In addition, ethical committees may require ad libitum feeding. However, feeding affects the metabolism so ad libitum feeding may mask the effects of drugs on tissues directly involved in the digestion process (e.g., jejunum and liver). Despite this effect, principal component analysis has the potential of identifying metabolic traits that are statistically independent (orthogonal) to ad libitum feeding. Consequently, we used principal component analysis to

Metarhizium anisopliae infection-associated metabolites act upon LmOBP2 to suppress locust feeding.

Entomopathogenic fungi can manipulate host behavior to promote infection success, but the molecular effectors remain largely unknown. Here w … on) decreased antennal electrophysiological (EAG) responses and significantly suppressed host-plant feeding behavior, resulting in a ≈ 30% decline in corn-leaf consumption relative to controls. Dual-choice assays further showed that LmOBP2 silencing abolished preference for leaf alcohol and linalool, while preference for ethyl 2-hydroxyacetate remained largely unc …

Brain and intestinal expression of galanin-like peptide (GALP), galanin receptor R1 and galanin receptor R2, and GALP regulation of food intake in goldfish (Carassius auratus).

Galanin-like peptide (GALP) is a 60 amino acid neuropeptide originally discovered from porcine hypothalamus, and is involved in the regulation of food intake in mammals. Since its discovery, GALP and its receptors (GALR1 and GALR2) have been characterized in mammals, but no publications are available on GALP in fish and other non-mammals. The present study aimed to characterize brain and intestinal GALP and its receptors using immunohistochemistry in a teleost, the goldfish (Carassius auratus), and to study its effects on feeding behavior. Immunostaining of brain sections shows the presence of…

Analysis of Drosophila larval feeding response to quinine-adulterated food.

The food responses of Drosophila larvae offer an excellent opportunity to study the genetic and neural regulation of feeding behavior. Compared with fed larvae, hungry larvae are more likely to display aggressive foraging, rapid food intake, compensatory feeding, and stress-resistant food procurement. Omnivores, including humans, tend to avoid noxious or unfamiliar food. Fly larvae avoid bitter substances such as quinine. As an increasing amount of quinine is added to an otherwise palatable liquid medium containing sugar and inactivated yeast, larvae become less likely to consume the tainted f…

Screening and Functional Analysis of a Novel Salivary Effector DcE13 from the Asian Citrus Psyllid, Diaphorina citri.

The lack of sequence similarity among insect effectors necessitates the independent identification of effectors in the Asian citrus psyllid … fector that facilitates psyllid feeding. These results enrich our current understanding of D. citri feeding behavior while simultaneously offering a potential target gene for controlling this pest.

The mPVN mediates blockade of NPY-induced feeding by a Y5 receptor antagonist: a c-FOS analysis.

To identify the site(s) of NPY Y5 receptor (Y5R) mediation of NPY-induced feeding, we employed c-Fos immunostaining and a selective Y5R anta … us similar finding of Y1R involvement, these results suggest that NPY receptor sites concerned with feeding behavior reside selectively in the mPVN and Y1 and Y5 receptors are either coexpressed or expressed separately in those target neurons that promote appetitive drive.

Executive functioning is linked to feeding practices and food insecurity in Head Start mothers.

Lower executive functioning is associated with more reactive, coercive general parenting practices. Parents who experience poverty, a chronic stressor, may have compromised executive functioning that impacts parenting practices, but less is known about the impact on parent feeding practices. This study examined associations between maternal executive functioning and feeding practices among families living in low-income contexts. Participants included 137 mothers of children enrolled in Head Start who completed the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Adult version, Child Feeding Que

Persistent Feeding and Swallowing Deficits in a Mouse Model of 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome.

Disrupted development of oropharyngeal structures as well as cranial nerve and brainstem circuits may lead to feeding and swallowing difficulties in children with 22q11. 2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS). We previously demonstrated aspiration-based dysphagia during early postnatal life in the LgDel mouse model of 22q11DS along with disrupted oropharyngeal morphogenesis and divergent differentiation and function of cranial motor and sensory nerves. We now ask whether feeding and swallowing deficits persist in adult LgDel mice using methods analogous to those used in human patients to evaluate feedi

Cyclical loading, daily feeding modality and the saturation response in the developing skull.

Diet-induced cyclical loading causes elevated bony responses in mammal jaws, an adaptive phenomenon likewise observed between increased locomotor stresses and limb growth. Mammal limbs exhibit reduced mechanosensitivity and osteogenesis after prolonged cyclical loading, with rest periods between loading bouts mitigating this “saturation response”. This phenomenon has never been investigated in the skull despite documented variation in feeding modalities among diverse mammals. We have demonstrated, with a long-term dietary experiment, that domestic white rabbits raised unimodally (unrestricted

Link Between Anhedonia, Reward Dysfunction, and Eating Behavior Across Mental and Physical Health Conditions: A Narrative Review.

Background/Objectives: Anhedonia, the inability to derive pleasure from typically enjoyable activities, is prevalent in psychiatric and neurological disorders, and is linked to conditions such as obesity and eating disorders. Simultaneously, characteristics of altered eating behavior have been observed amongst these segments, yet the link between anhedonia and eating behavior, and its mechanisms remain underexplored. Methods: This current narrative review synthesizes evidence for a relationship between pleasure perception and eating behavior among individuals with anhedonic traits, emphasizing

Pathological Eating Patterns in Adults Displaying Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms: A Scoping Review.

AIM: Numerous studies have now shown that those with eating disorders have statistically higher rates of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, much less is known about the eating behaviours of adults with OCD. This scoping review aimed to identify and synthesise the existing literature describing pathological eating behaviours in adults with OCD and/or obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms. METHOD: The databases PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect and PsychNet were searched in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. RESULTS: Fift

Orthorexia nervosa.

INTRODUCTION: Some clinicians have argued that 2-week wait suspected colorectal cancer patients can go 'straight-to-test' to facilitate time to diagnosis and treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the currently used referral letters are reliable enough to allow that pathway. PATIENTS AND METHODS: General practitioner (GP) letters referring patients under the Two Week-Wait Rule for suspected colorectal cancer were prospectively reviewed over a 6-month period. Three examining consultants were asked to outline the tests they would perform having only read the letter, and then a

Eating disorder animal model.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this review is to describe animal models that simulate the features of eating disorders. The literature pertaining to animal models that are of relevance for clinical eating disorders and the possible underpinning mechanisms was reviewed using PubMed, Ovid database and Google Scholar. RECENT FINDINGS: New refinements of the circuits regulated by neurotransmitters and neuropeptides which instigate eating behaviours and the various feedback pathways which monitor acute and chronic nutrient status continue to be discovered. Moreover, work with the animal models that

A Web-Based Intervention (MotivATE) to Increase Attendance at an Eating Disorder Service Assessment Appointment: Zelen Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Early assessment and treatment of eating disorder patients is important for patient outcomes. However, up to a third of people referred for treatment do not access services and 16.4% do not attend their first scheduled assessment appointment. MotivATE is a fully automated, novel, Web-based program intended to increase motivation to change eating disorder behaviors, designed for delivery at the point of invitation to an eating disorder service, with the aim of increasing service attendance. OBJECTIVE: This paper assesses the impact of MotivATE on attendance at assessment when compa

An Overview of Conceptualizations of Eating Disorder Recovery, Recent Findings, and Future Directions.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review delineates issues in the conceptualization and operationalization of eating disorder recovery, highlights recent findings about recovery (since 2016), and proposes future directions. RECENT FINDINGS: A longstanding problem in the field is that there are almost as many different definitions of recovery in eating disorders as there are studies on the topic. Yet, there has been a general shift to accepting that psychological/cognitive symptoms are important to recovery in addition to physical and behavioral indices. Further, several operationalizations of recovery

Integrated circuits and molecular components for stress and feeding: implications for eating disorders.

Eating disorders are complex brain disorders that afflict millions of individuals worldwide. The etiology of these diseases is not fully understood, but a growing body of literature suggests that stress and anxiety may play a critical role in their development. As our understanding of the genetic and environmental factors that contribute to disease in clinical populations like anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder continue to grow, neuroscientists are using animal models to understand the neurobiology of stress and feeding. We hypothesize that eating disorder clinical phe

Eating and ruminating behavior of steers fed Coastal Bermudagrass hay at four levels.

Effects of feeding level on chewing behavior and physical reduction of particles during ingestive mastication and rumination were examined in four ruminally cannulated steers fed Coastal bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon [L.] Pers.) hay in the long form. The experimental design was a 4 x 4 latin square with 18-d periods. Treatments based on previous intakes were set at 50, 70, 90 and 110% of feed consumed per animal. Steers were fed at 12-h intervals. Chewing behavior was monitored over 4 d with a computerized system. Boli of ingested, masticated hay (MH), collected at the cardia, and serial samp
