Therapeutic Efficacy of Nasoenteric Tube Feeding in Children Needing Enteral Nutrition.

Background: There is limited information on therapeutic benefits and tube-related complications of pediatric nasoenteric (NE) tube feeding. We viewed, from different clinical aspects, NE tube feeding in children who are under intolerable conditions. Methods: A 10-years retrospective study enrolled 77 pediatric patients who underwent an endoscopic-guided placement of the NE tube for enteral nutrition. The evaluated data, including growth parameters, feeding volume, parenteral nutrition (PN) dependence, and nutritional markers [serum hemoglobin (Hb) and albumin] before and after NE tube feeding

The effect of non-nutritive sucking combined with oral motor stimulation and oral support on feeding performance in premature infants: A single-blind randomized-clinical trial.

PURPOSE: Feeding problems are common in premature infants (PIs) and may lead to negative consequences such as malnutrition, dehydration, excessive weight loss, as well as developmental and psychological deficits. Moreover, they are associated with increased length of hospital stay/cost. There is not enough evidence on how feeding problems should be treated in PIs. The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of non-nutritive sucking combined with oral motor stimulation and oral support on feeding performance in PIs. METHODS: A single-blind randomized clinical trial was performed on 4

Persistent Feeding and Swallowing Deficits in a Mouse Model of 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome.

Disrupted development of oropharyngeal structures as well as cranial nerve and brainstem circuits may lead to feeding and swallowing difficulties in children with 22q11. 2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS). We previously demonstrated aspiration-based dysphagia during early postnatal life in the LgDel mouse model of 22q11DS along with disrupted oropharyngeal morphogenesis and divergent differentiation and function of cranial motor and sensory nerves. We now ask whether feeding and swallowing deficits persist in adult LgDel mice using methods analogous to those used in human patients to evaluate feedi

The Broader Economic Value of School Feeding Programs in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Estimating the Multi-Sectoral Returns to Public Health, Human Capital, Social Protection, and the Local Economy.

Introduction: Globally, there are 370 million children receiving school meals every day. Coverage is least in low-income countries, where the need is greatest and where program costs are viewed as high in comparison with the benefits to public health alone. Here we explore the policy implications of including the returns of school feeding to other sectors in an economic analysis. Methods: We develop an economic evaluation methodology to estimate the costs and benefits of school feeding programs across four sectors: health and nutrition; education; social protection; and the local agricultural

The timing of complementary feeding in preterm infants and the effect on overweight: study protocol for a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: In term infants, there is evidence that early complementary feeding is a risk factor for childhood obesity. Therefore, timely introduction of complementary feeding during infancy is necessary. The World Health Organization (WHO) and European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) both developed recommendations for the start of complementary feeding for term-born infants. However, these guidelines cannot be directly translated to preterm infants. Recent literature looking at the introduction of complementary feeding in preterm infants gives contra

The comparative study of the outcomes of early and late oral feeding in intestinal anastomosis surgeries in children.

BACKGROUND: A leakage of intestinal anastomosis is typically regarded as a devastating post-operative complication. Traditionally its believed that long fasting after intestinal surgery protect anastomosis site and most surgeons applied this method. Post-operative long fasting has many physical and mental adverse effects, especially in children, but its benefit has not proven yet. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of early and late oral feeding in intestinal resection and anastomosis surgery in children. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This randomized, double-blind controlled trial evaluated the

Breast-feeding and overweight in adolescence: within-family analysis [corrected].

BACKGROUND: Previous reports have found associations between having been breast-fed and a reduced risk of being overweight. These associations may be confounded by sociocultural determinants of both breast-feeding and obesity. We addressed this possibility by assessing the association of breast-feeding duration with adolescent obesity within sibling sets. METHODS: We surveyed 5,614 siblings age 9 to 14 years and their mothers. These children were a subset of participants in the Growing Up Today Study, in which we had previously reported an inverse association of breast-feeding duration with o

Effects of the prone position and kangaroo care on gastric residual volume, vital signs and comfort in preterm infants.

AIM: Prone and kangaroo care positioning of preterm infants during intragastric tube feeding were compared with regard to post prandial gastric residual volume, vital signs and infant comfort. METHODS: The study sample included 30 28-36-birth-week old preterm infants who were hospitalized at the neonatal intensive care unit. Infants were fed in two positions: prone and kangaroo care. All the infants were placed in the prone position after feeding. Vital signs and comfort scores were recorded 30 min after feeding, and the gastric residual volume was measured 3 h after feeding. RESULTS: After

Influence of duration of total breast-feeding on bone mineral density in a Turkish population: does the priority of risk factors differ from society to society?

INTRODUCTION: Despite numerous studies on risk factors for osteoporosis the effect of breast-feeding on bone mineral density (BMD) is unclear. In this study our aim was to determine the influence of total duration of breast-feeding on BMD, and subsequent risk of osteoporosis. METHODS: A total of 1,486 postmenopausal women over the age of 40 were included in the study. Women with diseases or who were under drug treatments known to affect bone metabolism were excluded. The BMD of the lumbar spine and femoral neck were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry technique, using either the Norl

LGBTQ+ Parents and Infant Feeding: An Analysis of the Household Pulse Survey Dataset.

PURPOSE: Human milk is the optimal food for newborns; however, infant feeding practices of parents who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, or sexual and gender minorities (LGBTQ+) are largely unknown. The purpose of this study was to describe infant feeding practices in LGBTQ+ families and compare to heterosexual or cisgender families. METHODS: Secondary analyses of parents with an infant less than 12 months from the Household Pulse Survey (April-July 2024) were conducted. Demographic characteristics to include sexual orientation and gender identification were extracted. Infant feeding

In-hospital direct breastfeeding is linked to improved oral feeding and human milk intake at discharge and beyond in neonates with CHD.

BACKGROUND: Feeding neonates with CHD is clinically and emotionally challenging. Although human milk improves outcomes-including reduced necrotising enterocolitis, sepsis, and neurodevelopmental delays-its use remains suboptimal. Prior studies have focused on clinical endpoints, with limited attention to modifiable maternal or prenatal influences on feeding. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate how maternal expectations, prenatal counselling, and early lactation behaviours affect feeding outcomes in infants with prenatally diagnosed CHD. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study of 49 mother-infant

Breastfeeding and interdental spacing in primary dentition: a digital cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Interdental spacing in the primary dentition is a key physiological feature that facilitates proper eruption and alignment of permanent teeth. While genetic factors play a central role, environmental influences such as early feeding practices may also affect jaw development and spacing, although quantitative evidence is limited. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the relationship between early feeding practices-including breastfeeding, formula feeding, bottle and pacifier use, and timing of complementary feeding-and interdental spacing in the primary dentition. METHODS: A descriptive cross-se
