Arboviruses impose a serious threat to public health services. We report a case of a patient returning from a work trip to the Amazon basin with myalgia, arthralgia, fever, and headache. During this travel, the patient visited riverside communities. Both dengue and Chikungunya fevers were first suspected, tested for, and excluded. Mayaro fever was then confirmed by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction followed by next-generation sequencing and phylogenetic reconstruction. The increased awareness of physicians and consequent detection of Mayaro virus in this case was only possible du…

In Indonesia as well as in many developing countries both typhoid fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) are still endemic and prevalent. In Indonesia the incidence of DHF in 1994 was 9.72/100,000 population with CFR of 2.5% and each year about 640,000-1,500,000 cases of typhoid fever were reported with mortality of 1.6-3%. The concurrent infection of both diseases may occur in one patient.

Brazilian purpuric fever (BPF) is a fulminant, often fatal childhood illness that was first recognised in 1984. An outbreak in Serrana, São Paulo State in March to May, 1986, resulted in 11 cases. Haemophilus aegyptius was isolated from normally sterile body fluids in 10 children (9 from blood and 1 from cerebrospinal fluid contaminated with blood), consistent with a direct role for H aegyptius in the pathogenesis of BPF. The ability to define cases by positive blood cultures permitted an evaluation of the spectrum of illness of this disease. 5 culture-positive cases were clinically similar to…

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autoinflammatory genetic disorder characterized by prolonged periods of fever and serosal inflammation such as peritonitis, pleuritis, and arthritis. FMF is due to a mutation of the MEFV gene encoding pyrin. Although this disorder typically presents in early childhood with recurrent episodes that are self-limiting, atypical and long-lasting febrile episodes may cause significant diagnostic challenges, especially in regions where genetic testing for FMF is not easily available. In this study, we report a case of a four-year-old Syrian girl who presented …

After the mass campaign of Measles and Rubella vaccination in 2003 in Iran, the cases of measles and rubella infection decreased but still, the cases of rash and fever were reported. It is worth noting that some other viral infections show signs similar to measles and rubella such as some arboviruses. Considering the epidemic outbreak of arbovirus infections in countries neighbouring Iran, we performed this study to estimate the possibility of chikungunya and dengue fever among measles and rubella IgM negative patients presenting with rash and fever from December 2016 to November 2017 in the N…

BACKGROUND: Fever of unknown origin (FUO) is a perplexing medical problem. The causes for FUO are more than 200 diseases. The aim of the study was to present human clinical cases of Coxiella burnetii infection debuting as FUO.
METHODS: The following methods were conducted in the study: literature search, laboratory, imaging, and statistical methods. Criteria of Durack and Street were applied for FUO definition. For the etiological diagnosis indirect immunoenzyme assay (ELISA) for antibodies detection against Coxiella burnetii was used (cut-off = 0.481-0.519).
RESULTS: From 2008 until 2015, n…

OBJECTIVE: To study the adverse reactions and therapeutic effects of fluoroquinolones to investigate whether they can be used for the treatment of patients with typhoid fever and paratyphoid fever.
METHODS: The adverse reactions and therapeutic effects of fluoroquinolones were studied retrospectively in patients with typhoid fever and paratyphoid fever.
PATIENTS: 58 patients (54 Japanese) with typhoid fever, 42 patients (41 Japanese) with paratyphoid fever, and 1 Japanese patient with both typhoid fever and paratyphoid fever, who were admitted in hospitals in Tokyo, Kawasaki, Yokohama, Kyoto…
