Comparative genomic analysis of Staphylococcus spp. and Mammaliicoccus sciuri suggests potential sharing between dogs and their owners.

INTRODUCTION: Staphylococci are a diverse group of bacteria commonly found on the skin and mucosal surfaces of humans and animals. Members of the genus can transition from commensalism to opportunistic pathogenicity. The extent to which close contact facilitates transmission of staphylococci remains misunderstood, particularly at the genomic level. In this context, the present study aimed to investigate the possible transmission of Staphylococcus spp. and Mammaliicoccus sciuri between dogs and their owners. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For this, we used a comparative genomics framework to investiga

Predictions of cognitive detriments from galactic cosmic ray exposures to astronauts on exploration missions.

For the first-time we report on predictions on cognitive detriments from galactic cosmic ray (GCR) exposures on long-duration space missions outside the protection of the Earth's magnetosphere and solid body shielding. Estimates are based on a relative risk (RR) model of the fluence response for proton and heavy ion in rodent studies using the widely used novel object recognition (NOR) test, which estimates detriments in recognition or object memory. Our recent meta-analysis showed that linear and linear-quadratic dose response models were not accurate, while exponential increasing fluence res

Skeletal adaptation to external loads optimizes mechanical properties: fact or fiction.

The skeleton adapts to a changing mechanical environment but the widely held concept that bone cells are programmed to respond to local mechanical loads to produce an optimal mechanical structure is not consistent with the high frequency of bone fractures. Instead, the author suggests that other important functions of bone compete with mechanical adaptation to determine structure. As a consequence of competing demands, bone architecture never achieves an optimal mechanical structure.

Perspective on the consequences of short- and long-duration space flight on human physiology.

During the past three decades, humans have made significant progress in accomplishing their aspirations for exploring the Moon and the planets. It is now appreciated that humans undergo a remarkable number of physiologic adaptations in microgravity that affect most physiologic systems. Space motion sickness was one of the first adaptations that humans experienced in microgravity. However, it is self-limiting and, most of the time, is effectively treated pharmacologically. Of particular concern is that, in microgravity, there is marked wasting of the skeletal musculature and skeleton that appea

Medical monitoring in long-term space missions.

The following principles, derived from the experience of medical support during past spaceflights, can provide a basis for a system of health monitoring and diagnosis during long-term and interplanetary missions: a system of preflight medical screening; medical screening on a systemic basis, which may include purposeful diagnosis in subsystems following the method of hierarchic structure; use of an individual approach; correction of the medical program with respect to the space crew status; assessment of the interrelations of the entire complex of parameters; utilization of the methods of corr

Space motion sickness and space vestibulology.

Given the relatively short period of the space flight missions and more inexperienced personnel expected to be aloft, if the time in space should be optimized, the critical processes which occur in the body equilibrium system during the period of initial exposure to space environment must be thoroughly investigated. It is most important that improved management of space motion sickness (including the prediction, prevention and countermeasures) is properly developed. The improvement will fully depend on advances in our research on the etiology and pathology of this debilitating condition.

In vivo tracking of grape marc biomarkers, bioconversion, metabolic tracers, and microbiota modulation in swine fed a polyphenol-rich extract diet.

This work evaluated the addition of the polyphenol-rich bioactive extract "e-Vitis", derived from grape marc (the main by-product of the wine industry), into swine feed. This was performed with the aim of testing the in vivo bioavailability of functional compounds, mainly phenolics, through the digestive system and excreta, together with the detection of bioconversion products associated with gut microbiota improvements. Additionally, the palatability of e-Vitis feed was evaluated, as well as the absence of metabolites that could compromise its innocuity. Through a pilot trial, a global method

Sounds of danger and post-traumatic stress responses in wild rodents: ecological validity of a translational model of post-traumatic stress disorder.

In the wild, animals face a highly variable world full of predators. Most predator attacks are unsuccessful, and the prey survives. According to the conventional perspective, the fear responses elicited by predators are acute and transient in nature. However, the long-term, non-lethal effects of predator exposure on prey behavioral stress sequelae, such as anxiety and post-traumatic symptoms, remain poorly understood. Most experiments on animal models of anxiety-related behavior or post-traumatic stress disorder have been carried out using commercial strains of rats and mice. A fundamental que

Myosin dilated cardiomyopathy mutation S532P disrupts actomyosin interactions, leading to altered muscle kinetics, reduced locomotion, and cardiac dilation in Drosophila.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a life-threatening disease characterized by pathological heart enlargement, can be caused by myosin mutations that reduce contractile function. To better define the mechanistic basis of this disease, we employed the powerful genetic and integrative approaches available in Drosophila melanogaster. To this end, we generated and analyzed the first fly model of human myosin-induced DCM. The model reproduces the S532P human β-cardiac myosin heavy chain DCM mutation, which is located within an actin-binding region of the motor domain. In concordance with the mutation's

Species Identification And Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing Of The Nocardia Genus: Advances And Clinical Challenges.

The genus Nocardia comprises bacteria widely distributed in nature that can cause infections in both humans and animals. Due to their diverse clinical manifestations and prolonged culture time, infections are frequently misdiagnosed or overlooked. In recent years, advances in biological techniques have markedly improved molecular diagnostic methods, enabling more precise species identification. However, the increasing issue of antimicrobial resistance poses significant challenges for clinical management, particularly among immunocompromised patients, for whom treatment is more complex. Application of a comprehensive approach to pathogen screening in a stowaway rat on an airplane.

In April 2017, a rat was observed on an airplane during a flight from Miami (USA) to Berlin (Germany). After landing in Berlin, significant efforts were made to trap the rat and disinfect the airplane. As rats are known reservoir hosts for a variety of zoonotic pathogens, this event necessitated the establishment of a standard workflow for the detection of rodent-borne pathogens. Tissue and blood samples were collected to screen for zoonotic pathogens and other known and novel infectious agents using an array of open-view methods (cultivation and characterization of bacteria, high-throughput s

A global view on quantitative proteomic and metabolic analysis of rat livers under different hypoxia protocols.

Hypobaric hypoxia causes altitude sickness and significantly affects human health. As of now, focusing on rats different proteomic and metabolic changes exposed to different hypoxic times at extreme altitude is blank. Our study integrated in vivo experiments with tandem mass tag (TMT)- and gas chromatography time-of-flight (GC-TOF)-based proteomic and metabolomic assessments, respectively. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to long-term constant hypoxia for 40 days or short-term constant hypoxia for three days, and their responses were compared with those of a normal control group. Post-hyp

Quantification of Anopheles gambiae Olfactory Preferences under Semi-Field Conditions.

Anopheles gambiae is a highly anthropophilic (human-preferring) malaria vector that prefers to blood feed frequently and selectively on humans. This mosquito species exhibits a strong innate olfactory preference to seek out human scent over other animals, and certain humans over others-key behavioral traits with the potential to drive heterogeneity in biting risk and malaria transmission. Here, we describe the application of a large-scale, semi-field system in Zambia for the quantification of An. gambiae olfactory preferences toward whole body odor sourced from individual humans. We detail ste

Enterococcus hirae bacteremia associated with acute pyelonephritis in a patient with alcoholic cirrhosis: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Infections caused by Enterococcus hirae are common in animals, with instances of transmission to humans being rare. Further, few cases have been reported in humans because of the difficulty in identifying the bacteria. Herein, we report a case of pyelonephritis caused by E. hirae bacteremia and conduct a literature review on E. hirae bacteremia. CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old male patient with alcoholic cirrhosis and neurogenic bladder presented with fever and chills that had persisted for 3 days. Physical examination revealed tenderness of the right costovertebral angle. Matrix

Air Travel, Circadian Rhythms/Hormones, and Autoimmunity.

Biological rhythms are fundamental for homeostasis and have recently been involved in the regulatory processes of various organs and systems. Circadian cycle proteins and hormones have a direct effect on the inflammatory response and have shown pro- or anti-inflammatory effects in animal models of autoimmune diseases. The cells of the immune system have their own circadian rhythm, and the light-dark cycle directly influences the inflammatory response. On the other hand, patients with autoimmune diseases characteristically have sleep disorders and fatigue, and in certain disease, such as rheuma

Noradrenaline transmission reducing drugs may protect against a broad range of diseases.

1 A growing body of evidence suggests that the signalling molecule, noradrenaline (NA), plays a pathophysiological role in a broad range of psychiatric, neurological and peripheral disorders. Both preclinical and clinical data suggest that elevated NA signalling may be involved in the aetiology of major diseases such as depression, Alzheimer's disease and diabetes mellitus. 2 The molecular pathways by which NA may cause the manifestation of disease remain poorly understood, although they may include G protein-coupled receptor modulation of the Ras/MAP kinase, Stat3 and PI3K pathways, among oth

Rapid detection of GM1 ganglioside in cerebrospinal fluid in dogs with GM1 gangliosidosis using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry.

The concentration of GM1 (monosialotetrahexosyl ganglioside) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is markedly increased in dogs with GM1 gangliosidosis due to GM1 accumulation in the central nervous system and leakage to the CSF. The present study established a rapid and simple method for detection of accumulated GM1 in the CSF in dogs with GM1 gangliosidosis using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI TOF MS) and discusses the usefulness of this method for the rapid diagnosis and/or high-risk screening of this disease in domestic animals.
