Single case study of brain FDG PET imaging in a patient with catatonia.

We report a case of bilateral occipitotemporal and thalamic hypometabolism on FDG PET in a 19-year-old male patient who presented with altered mental status. He had a history of static encephalopathy and presented with visual hallucinations and decreased verbal output, sleep, and appetite 7 days after starting amoxicillin for otitis media. Extensive evaluation failed to demonstrate any infectious, inflammatory, autoimmune-mediated (including negative testing for NMDA receptor antibody), paraneoplastic, or toxic-metabolic etiology. Ultimately, he responded well to a benzodiazepine challenge and

18F-FDG uptake in diffuse peritoneal lymphomatosis.

A 38-year-old man presented with declining appetite and progressive abdominal distention. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed omental and bowel wall thickening. Histopathologic examination showed a high-grade lymphoblastic Burkitt-like B-cell lymphoma. 18F fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography images showed diffusely increased metabolic activity in the thickened omentum, intestines, mesentery, and peritoneum (omental caking). Diffuse peritoneal and omental seeding are well-known forms of dissemination of metastatic carcinoma. However, omental and peritoneal lymphom

Positron emission tomography features of hidradenitis suppurativa.

A 35-year-old male with classical Hodgkin's lymphoma (nodular sclerosing, grade 1 histology, clinical stage 2A) underwent a positron emission tomography (PET) scan to assess response to treatment. Half body CT PET imaging was obtained using a Siemens Biograph scanner from eyes to thighs. 405 MBq of 18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) was injected with acquisition starting at 60 min. There was unexpected intense focal uptake in the superficial subcutaneous tissues of the abdomen, pelvis and lateral chest wall with overlying skin thickening seen on the CT component. This was initially of concern, but th

Bone infarct-associated sarcoma detected on FDG PET/CT.

Secondary sarcomas arising on the background of a bone infarct are extremely uncommon. Based on the knowledge of classic imaging patterns, however, lesions like bone infarcts can be recognized during positron emission tomography/computed tomography studies, which are now being performed increasingly in cancer patients. We demonstrate the detection of this rare entity on positron emission tomography/computed tomography and its correlation on magnetic resonance imaging in a 56-year-old man with asymptomatic multifocal osteonecrosis secondary to steroid treatment for polymyositis.

Metastatic meningioma: positron emission tomography CT imaging findings.

The imaging findings of a case of metastasing meningioma are described. The case illustrates a number of rare and interesting features. The patient presented with haemoptysis 22 years after the initial resection of an intracranial meningioma. CT demonstrated heterogeneous masses with avid peripheral enhancement without central enhancement. Blood supply to the larger lesion was partially from small feeding vessels from the inferior pulmonary vein. These findings correlate with a previously published case in which there was avid uptake of fluoro-18-deoxyglucose peripherally with lesser uptake ce

Exceptionally low metabolic activity in aggressive peripheral T-cell lymphoma.

PURPOSE: To investigate metabolic behavior of aggressive peripheral T-cell (PTC) lymphoma compared with other aggressive T-cell (OTC) nonHodgkin's lymphomas (NHLs) and the various grades (1, 2, 3) of follicular B-cell (FC) NHL as a reference cell type for indolent to aggressive behavior. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pretreatment 2-deoxy-2-[¹⁸F] fluoro-d-glucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography scans of 33 patients with pathologic diagnosis of aggressive T-cell NHL and FC (FC1 = 6, FC2 = 8, FC3 = 9, PTC = 6, OTC = 4) were analyzed. The maximal standardized uptake value (SUV) was meas

Early documentation of therapeutic response at 6 weeks following corticosteroid therapy in extensive sarcoidosis: promise of FDG-PET.

A 52-year-old man, who was treated with antitubercular drugs for 1 year without any benefit for an initial diagnosis of tuberculosis, and was referred for further evaluation. An FDG-PET study was performed to evaluate the whole-body disease status, which showed multiple abnormal foci in bilateral neck nodes, mediastinal, axillary, and multiple abdominal (para-aortic and inguinal) nodes, and the liver, spleen, and thyroid. A rebiopsy of the inguinal nodes for a definitive diagnosis was confirmatory of sarcoidosis. He had a history of hypothyroidism, which is a frequent accompaniment of sarcoido

Pitfalls of diagnosis based on abnormal flow cytometry and [(18)F]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography.

A 30-year-old, HIV-positive man with a previous history of an atypical nasopharyngeal Burkitt lymphoma developed fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) avidity on a routine FDG-positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography scan performed 10 months after the completion of all treatment. This new FDG-avid disease was in the area of his initial disease. Flow cytometric assessment of a fine needle aspiration showed a CD10-expressing B-cell population with kappa predominance. The corresponding cytology smears had large atypical lymphoid cells along with smaller lymphocytes and macrophages. Because of th

Diagnostic usefulness of FDG-PET for malignant somatostatinoma of the pancreas.

A 24-year-old female complaining of diarrhea and back pain was admitted to hospital where a tumor of the pancreatic head was revealed on a computed tomography (CT) scan. Abdominal ultrasonography, CT and celiac angiography revealed a hypervascular lesion on the pancreas. An endocrine tumor, particularly a somatostatinoma, was suspected and hormone levels in the blood were examined. Serum hormone levels were normal, so FDG-PET was performed. An abnormally high accumulation of FDG was detected on the FDG-PET image at the head of the pancreas, and the SUV of the lesion was 3.2, so the mass was co

Hypermetabolic activity in patients with active retroperitoneal fibrosis on F-18 FDG PET: report of three cases.

Idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis is an uncommon disease characterized by periaortic inflammation with gradual fibrosis and distortion of retroperitoneal structures such as the ureter. Several earlier case reports have documented hypermetabolic retroperitoneal activity on fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET) in patients with active disease, and a decrease in the activity following immunosuppressive therapy. We report FDG PET positive findings in three patients presenting with active retroperitoneal fibrosis. In two cases, enhancing periaortic soft tissue seen on computed

FDG-PET is useful in staging and follow-up of primary uterine cervical lymphoma.

A 35-year old woman presented with vaginal bleeding. She had a normal gynecologic examination and Papanicolaou test. A CT scan of the pelvis showed a cervical mass, which on biopsy proved to be B-cell lymphoma. PET before preoperative staging demonstrated a large area of increased FDG uptake in the pelvis, corresponding to the mass seen on the CT scan. There were no other abnormal F-18 FDG avid sites. The patient received chemotherapy followed by total abdominal hysterectomy. Histopathology was consistent with large B-cell lymphoma of the uterine cervix. Posttherapy CT scan and PET scan showed

Can brain-imaging studies provide a 'mood stabilizer signature?'.

Brain-imaging investigations have attempted to characterize the neurobiological basis of bipolar disorder. Preliminary studies have also focused on in vivo brain correlates of treatment response with antidepressants, mood stabilizers and other psychotropic medications. A MEDLINE literature search was conducted dating back to 1966. Selected in vivo brain-imaging studies that examined neurobiological correlates of treatment response in mood disorder patients were identified. Discrete anatomical abnormalities in subregions of the prefrontal cortex, medial temporal lobe and cerebellum have been id

FDG positron emission tomography in diffuse Lewy body disease: a case report.

Lewy body disease is a clinicopathologic condition that includes Parkinson's disease at one end and diffuse Lewy body disease at the other hand. The latter is often associated with progressive cognitive deterioration, levodopa-responsive parkinsonism, fluctuations of cognitive and motor functions, and visual and auditory hallucinations. In addition, it can be a familial disease. Clinical and positron emission tomographic findings are described in a patient with atypical dementia and movement disorder and a pathologically proved diagnosis of diffuse Lewy body disease.
