Congenital dislocation of the peroneal tendons is a rare and infrequently reported deformity of the foot in the neonate. Four cases of this deformity associated with a congenital calcaneovalgus deformity of the foot have been treated and followed to the resolution of both of the deformities. The calcaneovalgus foot proved more resistant to correction and required more prolonged and aggressive treatment than was usual when it was found as an isolated deformity. All four patients demonstrated other stigmata of intra-uterine malposition and oligohydramnios or both. Our anatomical studies suggeste

The problem of the varus hindfoot in children ages six to 10 has been discussed. A preliminary follow-up is presented on six patients treated by extensive medial release, multiple tendon lengthenings, and subtalar intra-articular arthrodesis. Two of our patients revealed incomplete correction of the deformity because of technical errors in the medial release. However, there have been no failures of fusion and no progression of the deformity to date. This is a preliminary report and further follow-up is indicated. It should be noted that we have now extended our series to 40 patients.

The proper management of acquired flatfoot deformity requires obtaining a careful patient history and physical examination of the foot, ankle, and lower extremity. Accurate assessment of foot flexibility and localization of pain will aid in decision making. Nonsurgical management may not be successful in patients with advanced disease, particularly with the development of degenerative changes. Surgical management of advanced acquired adult flatfoot deformity (stages III and IV) is indicated with failure of nonsurgical management and consists primarily of arthrodesis for the foot component of t

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the heritability of 3 common disorders affecting the forefoot, i.e., hallux valgus, lesser toe deformities, and plantar forefoot soft tissue atrophy, in white adult men and women.
METHODS: Between 2002 and 2008, a trained examiner used a validated foot examination to document the presence of hallux valgus, lesser toe deformities, and plantar soft tissue atrophy in 2,446 adults from the Framingham Foot Study. Among these, 1,370 participants with an available pedigree structure were included. Heritability was estimated using pedigree structures by the Sequential Oligogeni

The supramalleolar osteotomy is a commonly used surgical procedure to correct congenital or acquired deformities of the distal tibia, ankle, or foot. In children, osteotomy has been used to correct malunion of fractures, physeal growth arrest, tibial torsion, paralytic deformities, and sequelae of a clubfoot.

The reconstruction of lobster-cleft foot is no longer considered from a functional point of view only. The aesthetic appearance of the repaired foot is now considered to be equally important. Since we reported the reconstruction of five toes in 1976, we have operated on 8 patients, totaling 16 cleft foot anomalies. We have followed-up these patients from 3 years to 7 years. As a result, we emphasize that this operative method is excellent in terms of both the function and the aesthetics, and the newly formed toes help to prevent pincer-like deformities. Since those deformities become more seri

Surgeons have questioned whether foot deformity applies abnormal loading on a knee implant. A total of 24 patients with mild knee deformity underwent a static recording of foot loading prior to and at 3 months following knee replacement. Of these patients, 13 had a preoperative varus deformity. The recorded postoperative to preoperative loading in all 6 geographic sites was decreased by an average of 10%. The largest changes were observed in the hallux and lesser toe masks, whereas the postoperative to preoperative foot pressure ratio in the metatarsal head (lateral and medial), heel, and midf

The cavus foot is a deformity characterized by abnormal elevation of the medial arch of the foot. Unique among foot deformities, cavus typically occurs secondary to a spinal cord or neuromuscular pathology, with two-thirds of patients having an underlying neurologic diagnosis. Thus, recognition of cavus foot and appropriate evaluation are essential in the primary care setting. Patients may present with unstable gait, frequent ankle sprains, or pain along the metatarsal heads or the lateral border of the foot. The diagnosis can be confirmed with a lateral weight-bearing radiograph, with several…

BACKGROUND: Foot and ankle problems are especially common in patients with RA, causing significant disability and limitation in daily activities. Previous studies have mainly focussed on foot problems in the adult population whilst the evidence of foot health in the older population is scarce.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to analyse self-assessed foot health and associated factors in older people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
METHODS: The study applied a descriptive cross-sectional survey design and recruited older people with RA from the member register of one patient association.

The authors discuss the frequency, etiology, symptoms and classification as well as treatment of congenital dislocation of the knee. 8 own cases are reported in the article. The authors suggest that congenital dislocation of the may be well influenced by non-operative methods. Etappe redressement by means of plaster does not interfere with the functional treatment of the hip dislocation usually treated with the Pavlik braces. Associated foot deformities may be easily corrected at the same time. The so called "earliest treatment" is most important in all the three deformities (knee-hip dislocat…

BACKGROUND: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is an inherited peripheral neuropathy that is associated with a cavovarus foot deformity that leads to impaired mobility and pain. Structural differences in the hindfoot, midfoot, and forefoot that contribute to this cavovarus deformity have not been fully characterized or described between disease subtypes. This study aimed to identify structural differences in the foot associated with CMT and between demyelinating and axonal subtypes in a retrospective cross-sectional study.
METHODS: In this study, we use statistical shape modeling, a mathematic

A cavovarus foot is characterized by exacerbated medial longitudinal arch (cavus), hindfoot varus, plantar flexed first ray, forefoot pronation (apparent supination), forefoot adduction, and claw toe deformities. It can be broadly divided as flexible and rigid and further classified based on the neurological and non-neurological causes. Diabetes associated peripheral neuropathy complicates individual bony deformities associated with cavovarus foot with early callus which can breakdown to ulceration rapidly. Based on the disease progression in neurological and non-neurological causes of cavovar

Sagittal lesser toe deformities (LTD) are the most common in cavus foot. They are mainly the result of muscular imbalance between intrinsic and extrinsic muscles. Surgery is the second-line treatment if medical treatment fails. The aim of the present study was to provide an update on classification and surgical management of LTD in cavus foot including percutaneous procedures with a special focus on sagittal deformities. Joint sparing procedures are preferred for reducible LTD, whereas lesser toe fusions are used for rigid one in association with tendon transfer or percutaneous procedures depe

Surgery of the rheumatoid foot and ankle Initial presentation of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) will be foot and ankle symptoms in 20% of cases. Eventually, 50-90% of patients will develop foot and ankle alterations. Typical deformities of the forefoot include hallux valgus and dorso-lateral dislocation of the lesser metatarso-phalangeal joints. RA involvement of the hindfoot frequently leads to plano-valgus deformity. Approximately 20% of surgery performed for RA is done at the foot and ankle. Early surgery is efficient against pain and deformity. Patient's satisfaction rate after surgery is high

This study aimed to evaluate joint-preserving procedures by a modified Mann method for rheumatoid forefoot deformities and their functional outcomes in the mid-term. Eleven feet in seven patients underwent forefoot surgery using a modified Mann method for the big toe, combined with offset osteotomy or resection arthroplasty of the lesser toes. The mean follow-up period was 3.6 years. The mean score on the Japanese Society for Surgery of the Foot scale for rheumatoid arthritis foot and ankle joints improved from 44.0 to 72.0. The mean hallux valgus angle improved from 39.4 degrees to 20.5 degre…
