Migration of Broken Kirschner Wire to the Brachial Plexus after Fixation of Fracture Dislocation of the Acromioclavicular Joint.

A complication of Kirschner (K) wire fixation is the migration of the wire. We report a patient who had undergone fixation of a right clavicle fracture associated with acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) dislocation 15 years ago. He presented with features of pain and dysaesthesia in the right ulnar nerve dermatome on the movement of the neck and shoulder. Radiographic investigations showed a broken K-wire that had migrated to the lower brachial plexus. He underwent surgical removal of the K-wire and recovered uneventfully. We summarise the literature on K-wire migration reported following clavicle

Lung destruction secondary to intrapulmonary migration of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt catheter: report of an unusual case and literature review.

Ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement for the treatment of hydrocephalus is one of the most common pediatric neurosurgical procedures. Complications, including infections, catheter obstruction, shunt breakdown, and hemorrhage, have been described in the literature. Occasionally, however, uncommon and devastating complications occur. We report a case of a 10-year-old female patient who at birth underwent surgical closure of lumbar myelomeningocele and placement of a CSF shunt at another center. Her neurosurgical follow-up was poor. She presented at our institution with a history of recurrent pne

Migration of Feeding Tubes Assessed by Using an Electromagnetic Device: A Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Bedside methods to verify placement of a feeding tube are not accurate for detecting placement within the gastrointestinal tract, increasing risk of pulmonary aspiration. Current guidelines recommend verifying placement every 4 hours, yet the rationale for this recommendation is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To assess spontaneous migration of small-bore feeding tubes in critically ill adults. METHODS: A prospective, repeated-measures cohort study was performed in 2 intensive care units. An electromagnetic placement device was used to assess distal feeding tube location every 24 hours for 7

[Unfixed Mesh Plug Migration from Inguinal Ring to Urinary Bladder].

A 65-year-old man presented to a clinic with a chief complaint of macrohematuria and frequent urination. The computed tomographic scan and cystoscopy revealed a dome of bladder tumor. He was referred to our hospital with the diagnosis of bladder tumor. He had undergone bilateral inguinal hernia repair and magnetic resonance imaging suggested mesh plug migration on the urinary bladder inserted into the right inguinal lesion 11 years previously. Under the diagnosis of mesh plug migration, partial cystectomy with extraction of the foreign body was performed. After the surgery he was well and symp

Filler migration to the forehead due to multiple filler injections in a patient addicted to cosmetic fillers.

Filler migration is a potential complication following the injection of multiple fillers. With the increasing popularity of multiple filler injections, migrated granulomas should be an essential differential diagnosis for newly growing facial lumps. It is important for all physicians to be aware that complication induced by dermal fillers can occur in locations other than the planned injected sites. We described a case of filler migration to the forehead in a patient addicted to cosmetic fillers. To our knowledge, it has never been published in dermatology literature so far. A detailed history

Understanding the Mechanical forces of Self-Expandable Metal Stents in the Biliary Ducts.

Self-expandable metallic stent (SEMS) was an effective biliary endoprosthesis. Mechanical properties of SEMS, radial and axial force (RF, AF), may play important roles in the bile duct after placement. RF was well known dilation force and influenced on the occurrence of migration. AF, newly proposed by this author, was defined as the recovery force when the SEMS vended. AF was related with the cause of bile duct kinking, pancreatitis, and cholecystitis due to the compression of the bile duct, orifice of the cystic duct, and pancreatic orifice. Ideal SEMS may show high RF and low AF.

Migration of rigid gas permeable contact lens into the upper eyelid after trauma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Migration of a rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lens after trauma is rare, and its clinical characteristics have not been fully discussed. CASE PRESENTATION: A 36-year-old female showed mild swelling in the right upper eyelid. She lost her RGP contact lens seven months prior to her first visit, from trauma by her child's kick to the right eye. At the first examination, we felt a firm lump inferior to the right brow. Eversion of the upper eyelid also revealed a firm subconjunctival mass superior to the upper tarsus. After incising the conjunctiva, the RGP contact lens was found wi

[Catch me if you can: endoscopic remove of a needle from the jejunum].

INTRODUCTION: The ingestion of foreign bodies is a frequently observed problem in daily clinical practice. In order to avoid complications such as perforation, endoscopic removal of potentially penetrating foreign bodies should be attempted quickly. The use of various endoscopic techniques has been reported for this purpose. However, extraction of foreign bodies from the mid gastrointestinal tract has rarely been reported. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a patient who had swallowed a safety needle which could safely be removed from the jejunum by means of double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE).

[Shunt dysfunction secondary to peritoneal catheter migration to the scrotum].

INTRODUCTION: Valvular dysfunction secondary to obstruction of proximal catheter is relatively frequent at emergency room. However non-infectius obstruction of distal catheter is exceptional. CASE REPORT: A 6-year-old boy with dysfunction shunt due to migration of the abdominal catheter into the right scrotum. The patient was operated urgently for peritoneum-vaginal processus closure. DISCUSSION: Permeability of the peritoneum-vaginal processus (until 60% of boys younger than one year) causes hydrocele in patients with ventricle-peritoneal shunt. However migration of the peritoneal cateter i

Accidental migration of a dental implant into the ethmoid sinus following a transalveolar sinus elevation procedure.

BACKGROUND: Migration of a dental implant into the paranasal sinuses may be the result of sinus membrane perforation, loss of osseointegration, and lack of initial stability. The majority of displaced implants migrate into the maxillary sinus, which may cause sinusitis. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to report an extremely rare ethmoid sinus migration of a dental implant after crestal approach in a resorbed posterior maxilla. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 60-year old Korean male with a noncontributory medical history was referred from a local clinic to remove the migrated dental implant in

Serious complications during aural impression-taking for hearing aids: a case report and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVES: Complications during aural impression-taking for hearing aids are relatively rare. We present a case to highlight the need for vigilance when taking an aural impression and review the literature to identify other cases in order to assess the range of complications encountered and the sequelae of this potentially serious problem. METHODS: We present a case report and a review of the literature. RESULTS: The most common complication was the entry of mold material into the middle ear cavity. This frequently occurred in patients with a preexisting perforation of the tympanic membrane

[Perforation of the intestine--rare complication of choledocholithiasis].

Endoscopic biliary stent insertion is a well-established treatment for hepatic, biliary or pancreatic disorders. A routine change of endoprostheses after 3 mo is a common practice but this can be prolonged to 6 mo. An bowell perforation resulting from a migrated biliary stent is a rare complication of endoscopic stent placement for benign or malignant biliary tract disease. We describe the case of a 84-year-old woman with a history of abdominal surgery in which a migrated biliary stent resulted in an ileal perforation. Patients with comorbid abdominal pathologies, including abdominal hernia, p
