Migration of surgical materials into the urinary tract is very rare. We present a case of spontaneous migration of a metal clip into renal pelvis after laparoscopic pyeloplasty. A 44-year-old woman who had a long history of multiple sclerosis presented with symptomatic left hydronephrosis due to ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction. Since antegrade endopyelotomy was unsuccessful, the patient underwent laparoscopic Anderson-Hynes pyeloplasty. Aspiration of particulate matter is a well-recognized complication in debilitated patients at autopsy but is not widely recognized in surgical pathology material. We have encountered a surprising number of cases on biopsy or resection specimens, and most were unsuspected clinically and pathologically. A key goal for implanted medical devices is that they do not elicit a detrimental immune response. Macrophages play critical roles in the modulation of the host immune response and are the cells responsible for persistent inflammatory reactions to implanted biomaterials. Pseudofolliculitis barbae is a common dermatologic conditions primarily affecting black men who shave closely on a regular basis. Figures cited in the literature indicate 10 to 83% of black men have some form of it. Commonly encountered in the military, pseudofolliculitis barbae has caused significant problems in all commands, both medically and administratively. This article will review the pathogenesis of pseudofolliculitis barbae and provide a variety of treatment modalities. Proper treatment is essential to avoid unnecessary scarring, pigmentation, and keloid formation.

A study of cytologic smears from 26 women using intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUDs) confirmed our previous findings for mast cells and further defined the averages, proportions and types of cells in IUD smears. The authors present a report on a successfully operated cholesterol granuloma of the urinary bladder in a 73 years old female. As suggested by its topography, the granuloma is best explained, in terms of its origin, as a cyst of the urachus. Its development is thought to be due to an inflammatory mechanism with resultant tissue destruction which triggered the endogenous release of the cell-bound cholesterol. These cholesterol substances, when freely deposited in the tissue, appear to give rise to extensive granulomatous foreign body reactions.

PURPOSE: Subepidermal calcified nodule of the eyelid is considered as one of the types of calcinosis cutis. It generally occurs in children, and is not known to be associated with systemic disease. The authors report histopathological and clinical findings in 14 cases of subepidermal calcified nodule of the eyelid, including 3 older patients with unique microscopic features.
