OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of surgical treatment for compound fracture of nasal bone and frontal process of maxilla with endoscopy and small local incision.
METHOD: Twenty-two cases with compound fracture of nasal bone and frontal process of maxilla were treated with surgery, and the postoperative effect were analysed.
RESULT: Twenty-two cases healed well.
CONCLUSION: CT scan and 3D reconstruction before operation can help the diagnosis. Corresponding incision and assisted endoscopy can make good surgical field and achieve surgical success. Rigid internal fixation is also the key for

BACKGROUND: The symptoms of a stress fracture are almost identical to those of most bone tumours. Even with the use of various imaging techniques, it can be difficult to establish the correct diagnosis. Although a primary bone tumour requires early treatment to improve its prognosis, the discriminative factor in the diagnosis of a stress fracture is its clinical development over time.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 10-year-old boy was referred to our outpatient clinic on the suspicion of a primary bone tumour in his right tibia.
CONCLUSION: A case was once described in this journal in which a stress fr

Study of the efficacy of fracture prevention approaches has been neglected in men, in comparison with women. Guidelines from the Endocrine Society for the management of osteoporosis and fracture risk in men are thus welcome, but further research into fracture prevention in men is required.

BACKGROUND: Pathological fractures signify a potentially more aggressive subset of the original disease with higher misdiagnosis rates and inferior oncologic results. The purpose of the present study was to explore the clinical features of neoplastic pathological fracture in extremities.
METHODS: From August 2002 to December 2010, a consecutive series of 139 patients suffering neoplastic pathological fracture were recruited, including 79 males and 60 females with a mean age of 31.3 years. Fractures were classified into five groups: tumor-like lesions (55), benign bone tumors (13), giant cell

OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence and patterns of contrecoup injury in traumatic temporal bone fracture cases.
METHOD: A prospective, cohort study was undertaken of all patients with traumatic head injury admitted to a tertiary referral hospital in Malaysia within an 18-month period. High resolution computed tomography scans of the brain and skull base were performed in indicated cases, based on clinical findings and Glasgow coma score. Patients with a one-sided temporal bone fracture were selected and subsequent magnetic resonance imaging performed in all cases. Contrecoup injury incidence,

Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to enhanced bone fragility and a consequent increase in fracture risk. One of the leading causes of secondary osteoporosis are thyroid diseases; this fact carries special importance for Georgia because of thyroid disease prevalence in Georgian population. In the present article we discuss the mechanisms, by which thyroid hormones and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) act on bone. We also present the data of meta-analysis of large studies, which demonstrate the

Demineralized bone matrix (DBM) has been touted as an excellent grafting material; however, there are no Level I studies that use DBM alone in humans to back up this claim. DBM functions best in a healthy tissue bed but should be expected to have little impact in an anoxic or avascular tissue bed, a situation often encountered in traumatic orthopaedic pathologies. Moreover, there is some evidence of differential potencies of DBM preparations based on donor variability and the manufacturing process. DBM efficacy may also be related to its formulation and the various carriers used. The fact that

BACKGROUND: Delay in fracture healing is a complex clinical and economic issue for patients and health services.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the incremental effectiveness and costs of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) on fracture healing in acute fractures and nonunions compared with standards of care.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched The Cochrane Library (2008, Issue 4), MEDLINE, and other major health and health economics databases (to October 2008).
SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and full or partial economic evaluations of BMP for fracture healing in skeletally mature adult

The life expectancy of individuals infected with HIV has improved greatly since the institution of combination antiretroviral therapy. However, many metabolic derangements have been discovered with long-term combination antiretroviral treatment, including lipodystrophy; insulin resistance; and, more recently, abnormal bone metabolism. It is well-documented that bone mineral density (BMD) in HIV-positive patients is lower compared with the expected BMD in non-HIV-positive patients. The underlying cause of lower BMD is unknown but is thought to be a multifactorial process. Conflicting evidence e

BACKGROUND: Displaced tibial plateau fractures are traditionally treated with internal fixation using autologous bone grafting to provide structural support. In comminuted and osteoporotic fractures, there can be insufficient autograft available for this. Fresh-frozen bone allograft is readily available in sufficient quantity to fill all voids, is relatively inexpensive, and avoids donor site morbidity.
METHODS: We describe our technique and the early clinical and radiologic results of compaction morselized bone grafting (CMBG) for displaced tibial plateau fractures using fresh-frozen allogra

Bone health is a major lifelong concern in caring for women and girls with Turner syndrome (TS). There is an approximately 25% increase in fracture risk most of which is related to medium or high impact trauma. The long bones, especially of the forearm are predominantly affected. This fact may be due to a selective cortical bone deficiency in TS which is unrelated to hypogonadism. In addition, lack of adequate estrogen replacement can lead to trabecular bone deficiency and increase in vertebral compression fractures after age 45. Evaluation of bone density by dual X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) i

Results of treatment of 282 patients with 288 fractures of tubular bones of the hand were analyzed. In 190 (67.4%) cases conservative methods of treatment were used, in 92 (32.6%)--surgical methods. In cases of fractures without displacement plaster immobilization was used, in patients with stable fractures of finger phalanx and metacarpal bones with fragment displacement we made closed reposition and plaster immobilization. We applied intramedullary osteosynthesis with Kirschner's wire after closed reposition in unstable oblique and transverse fractures with fragment displacement. In open fra

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an inflammatory disorder of the peripheral nerves and nerve roots characterised by lymphocytes and macrophage infiltration and myelin destruction. Two-thirds of cases of GBS emerge from viral or bacterial infection. GBS following facial bone fracture is rare. This article discusses a case of classical GBS following facial bone fracture and its correlative mechanism. The association of GBS with head injury per se is not well recognised. This case highlights the possibility of GBS following facial bone fracture and indicates that medical staff should be alerted t

The radiographic density of the proximal fragments of 16 scaphoid fractures was assessed on scaphoid series radiographs taken at 6 to 12 weeks. In addition, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry measurements of bone mineral density in the distal radius and proximal and distal fracture fragments were performed at 1 to 2 weeks and 6 to 12 weeks. Median reductions of 9% and 10% were observed in bone mineral density in the proximal fracture fragment and the distal radius respectively, but these did not correlate with the radiographic density of the proximal fragment. A greater median reduction in bone

Vitamin D inadequacy is pandemic in adults. Vitamin D deficiency causes osteopenia, precipitates and exacerbates osteoporosis, causes the painful bone disease osteomalacia, and increases muscle weakness, which worsens the risk of falls and fractures. Vitamin D deficiency can be prevented by sensible sun exposure and adequate supplementation. Monitoring serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D is the only way to determine vitamin D status. Recent recommendations suggest that in the absence of sun exposure, adults should ingest 1000 IU of vitamin D3 per day. The ideal healthy blood level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D

Fractures of hyoid bone resulting from trauma other than strangulation are very rare, isolated hyoid bone fractures are even rarer, and occur more frequently in young individuals, and in men more than in women. A comprehensive review of the world literature, also two rare cases of isolated hyoid bone fractures induced by direct trauma onto the anterior neck are presented. Additionally, a table summarizing 31 cases from 1954 to 2003, is included. Mechanism of injury, diagnosis, complications, prognosis, and treatment are discussed.

Our aim was to correlate the health status with objective and radiological outcomes in patients treated by open reduction and internal fixation for fractures of both bones of the forearm. We assessed 23 patients (24 fractures) subjectively, objectively and radiologically at a mean of 34 months (11 to 72). Subjective assessment used the disability of the arm, shoulder and hand (DASH) and musculoskeletal functional attachment (MFA) questionnaires. The range of movement of the forearm and wrist, grip and pinch strength were measured objectively and standardised radiographs were evaluated. In gene
