BACKGROUND: Open pediatric Monteggia fracture-dislocations are a relatively uncommon injury pattern, with limited numbers reported in previous series. Open fracture-dislocations frequently represent more severe injury patterns with potential for contamination. We aim to determine differences in long-term clinical and functional outcomes in the operative management of closed versus open pediatric Monteggia fracture-dislocations.
METHODS: A retrospective review of operatively treated pediatric Monteggia fracture-dislocations was performed. Closed versus open injuries were compared in both clini

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the curative effect of closed reduction and external fixation in the treatment of grade IV supination-external rotation fractures of the ankle joint.
METHODS: Fifty-six patients treated with closed reduction and external fixation from February 2016 to March 2020 were included in this retrospective study, all with sprains. After receiving nerve block anesthesia, the patient underwent closed reduction under C-arm fluoroscopy, and the ankle joint was fixed in a dorsiflexion-inversion position with casting and splints after the end of the fracture met the reduction stand

CASE: A 58-year-old woman underwent successful reverse total shoulder arthroplasty for a proximal humerus fracture. Three years later, she sustained a periprosthetic humerus fracture after a fall and was treated conservatively. She healed with an abundance of callus and subsequently developed delayed-onset radial nerve palsy at 3 months, despite minimal change in humeral alignment and avoidance of the use of any compressive external braces or splints.
CONCLUSIONS: Minimally displaced periprosethetic humerus fractures can lead to delayed radial nerve palsy from callus entrapment, and there sho

INTRODUCTION: Dislocation after bipolar hip hemiarthroplasty is an uncommon complication. Although closed manoeuvre reduction under general anaesthesia is a common and effective method for dislocation of the hemiarthroplasty. However, closed reduction leads to preprosthesis fracture of femoral and loosening of femoral prosthesis is a rare situation, which requires incision reduction and a revision hemiarthroplasty.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 80-year-old female had cementless bipolar hip hemiarthroplasty due to a right femoral neck fracture. At the 11 days of postoperation, the patient had a disl

OBJECTIVE: To better characterize nonunion endochondral bone healing and evaluate novel therapeutic approaches for critical size defect healing in clinically challenging bone repair, a segmental defect model of bone injury was adapted from the three-point bending closed fracture technique in the murine femur.
METHODS: The mouse femur was surgically stabilized with an intramedullary threaded rod with plastic spacers and the defect adjusted to different sizes. Healing of the different defects was analyzed by radiology and histology to 8 weeks postsurgery. To determine whether this model was eff

Clinical concerns have been raised over prior exposure to bisphosphonates impairing fracture healing. To model this, groups of male Wistar rats were assigned to saline control or treatment groups receiving 0.15 mg/kg (low dose), 0.5 mg/kg (medium dose), and 5 mg/kg (high dose) Pamidronate (PAM) twice weekly for 4 weeks. At this point, closed fractures were made using an Einhorn apparatus, and bisphosphonate dosing was continued until the experimental endpoint. Specimens were analyzed at 2 and 6 weeks (N = 8 per group per time point). Twice weekly PAM dosing was found to have no effect on early

BACKGROUND: Since 2015, we have performed arthroscopy-assisted closed reduction and percutaneous pinning (A/S-CRPP) for children with a displaced lateral condylar humeral fracture (LCF). The purpose of this study is to introduce our A/S-CRPP method and present its outcomes.
METHODS: In total, 39 displaced (>2 mm) LCFs for which A/S-CRPP was initially attempted and with available follow-up data of >12 months were retrospectively reviewed. A/S-CRPP is performed in the following order: closed reduction, 1 provisional K-wire fixation, arthroscopic verification of the reduction status, rereduction

PURPOSE: Handheld ultrasound technology is increasingly used in health care. Its use for fracture care has not been adequately evaluated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate handheld, pocket-sized ultrasound in the diagnosis and assessment of reductions in distal radius fractures.
METHODS: A total of 23 patients with distal radius fractures (average age, 53 years; 13 women) and 20 control patients (average age, 53 years; 10 women) were prospectively enrolled. All patients with distal radius fractures underwent standard, 3-view radiographic and ultrasonographic examinations of the wrist

BACKGROUND: This study compared the radiological outcomes of adult closed distal radius fractures (DRFs) reduction with and without fluoroscopy. We hypothesized that fluoroscopy-assisted reduction would not improve radiographic alignment or decrease the need for surgery.
METHODS: Hospital medical records and radiographic images of all patients who presented with DRFs between April to June 2009 and April to June 2013 were reviewed. All patients underwent closed reduction and immobilization with or without fluoroscopic assistance. Reduction attempts were noted and pre- and postreduction postero

Ankle fractures represent an exciting field of traumatology because of the wide variety of clinical presentations, injury mechanisms, and treatment options. Rupture of the posterior tibialis tendon (PTT) with ankle fracture can occur during trauma that involves pronation and external rotation of the foot or, less commonly, secondary to direct trauma to the ankle. This tendon injury is uncommon and probably misdiagnosed in many cases, because of the difficult clinical examination secondary to the pain and swelling. The identification and early treatment of PTT tears is essential for good functi

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the proximal third of the ulna and radius with associated anterior radial head dislocation are uncommon in children. Early recognition and appropriate management are essential to prevent long-term consequences of loss of forearm rotation, cubitus valgus, elbow instability and chronic pain.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 3-year-old Caucasian boy who attended the emergency department following an un-witnessed fall, resulting in right elbow and forearm pain, swelling and deformity. Clinical and radiological examination revealed a Monteggia type IV fracture-d

Introduction. Cervical spinal cord injuries due to traumatic fractures are associated with persistent neurological deficits. Although clinical evidence is weak, early decompression, defined as <24-72 h, has been frequently proposed. Animal studies show better outcomes after early decompression within one hour or less, which can hardly ever be achieved in clinical practice. Case Presentation. A 37-year-old patient was hospitalized after being hit by a shying horse. After diagnosis of C4/5 fracture dislocation and complete paraplegia, she was intubated and sedated with deep relaxation. Emergency

We report an acute rupture of a macroscopically normal tibialis posterior tendon in the setting of an acute closed ankle fracture. This injury is considered to be rare, although it is probably frequently overlooked preoperatively because of limitations of the clinical examination secondary to pain. The tibialis posterior tendon rupture was identified at the time of operative repair of the ankle fracture, and direct suture repair of the tendon was undertaken. After primary suture and osteosynthesis, the patient's progress was favorable and a satisfactory outcome was achieved. A clear history of

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The aim with high tibial valgus osteotomy (HTO) is to correct the mechanical axis in medial compartmental osteoarthritis of the knee. Loss of operative correction may threaten the long-term outcome. In both a lateral closing-wedge procedure and a medial opening-wedge procedure, the opposite cortex of the tibia is usually not osteotomized, leaving 1 cm of bone intact as fulcrum. A fracture of this cortex may, however, lead to loss of correction; this was examined in the present study.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We used a prospective cohort of 92 consecutive patients previous

The diagnosis and the treatment of an unusual posttraumatic occlusion of a femoral superficial artery during skeletal traction has been described. Angiography of the arteries of lower extremities was done because a sharp pain, cold, parestesia of the foot and absent pulsies had been found. The occlusion of the right femoral superficial artery was seen in the place of the compression of the artery by a fragment of femur. The fracture of the femur was stabilized with Ender's rods immediately and the injured part of the artery was resected and replaced by a venous graft. The healing was without a
