A case of giant osteoma of frontal sinus passing into anterior fossa of the skull, ethmoid and orbit at the right side in a 17-year-old boy was introduced. The osteoma has been surgically removed with neurosurgeon cooperation. Considering the large damage of bone, reconstruction of the frontal part by "Codubix" was done. Post-surgical course without complications and good cosmetic effect were obtained.

Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a rare non-neoplastic bone lesion that involves mostly the long bones and vertebrae and may occur very rarely in the craniofacial bones. ABCs may occur as secondary bony pathologies in association with various benign and malignant bone tumors and with fibrous dysplasia (FD). FD is a common non-neoplastic bony pathology mostly affecting craniofacial bones. Secondary ABC occurring in craniofacial FD is extremely rare, with only approximately 20 cases reported in the literature to date. Here, we report on a case of secondary ABC in a 25-year-old woman who has had a c

OBJECTIVE: The anterior skull base is a location of many pathologic lesions. These pathologic lesions are treated by bifrontal craniotomy and anterior skull base approach, either primarily or combined with facial osteotomies. To obtain wide exposure, low-profile craniotomies are preferred. In this article, we attempt to describe our own technique of frontal craniotomy for anterior skull base approach. In this technique, the frontal bone, frontal sinus, and the superior supraorbital bar are elevated in en bloc fashion.
METHODS: Bicoronal skin incision is followed by dissection and retraction o…

In 20 patients with fronto-basal CSF fistulae, radiograms, tomograms and CTs in the axial and coronal projection were taken before operation. The evaluation showed that small fractures of the cribriform lamina could be demonstrated most clearly by CT with narrow coronal sections. Although the resolution properties of CT is still inferior to that of tomography for small osseous fissures, good CT results could be achieved by the better demonstration of accompanying mucosal swelling and/or small effusions. Fractures of the walls of the frontal sinuses, on the other hand, where shown better by tom

BACKGROUND: The objectives of this study were first to compare the results of osteosynthesis with standard Metaizeau (MS) nails versus Metaizeau Junior Flex or MJF Orthofix (MJF) in terms of the stability of long-bone fractures in children, and to study the preoperative and postoperative safety of these new nails. We also carried out an analysis by computer modeling of a femur, in order to compare the biomechanical stability of the 2 nails. The interest in the MJF nails lies in the improvements they bring in terms of stability for long-bone fractures in pediatric patients, as well as the simpl

Objective:Anatomical variation or scar atresia of the drainage channel of the frontal sinus on the affected side, and opening the frontal sinus through the drainage channel of the frontal sinus on the affected side may lead to surgical failure. The purpose of this study is to explore a modified Draf Ⅲ operation to complete the drainage of the affected frontal sinus by removing the floor wall and septum of the frontal sinus and connecting the bilateral frontal sinus through the healthy side of the frontal sinus. Methods:Through the anatomical study of 2 skull bone specimens and 2 fresh frozen s

Hyperostosis frontalis interna (HFI) is a condition manifested by thickening of the inner surface of the frontal bone and it could be useful when dealing with the identification of human remains in various anthropological and forensic investigations. We compared the macroscopic appearance and morphologic (metric) features of the skulls in cases with and without HFI, in both sexes, and wanted to establish whether age determined occurrence of HFI. To achieve this aim, we performed prospective autopsy study, covering ten-year period (2007-2016). Study group consisted of southeast Europe Caucasian…

General considerations about frontal sinus development are discussed. This retrospective radiological study concerns 90 craniosynostoses among 850 cases operated in the Cranio-Facial Unit (1976-88, Hôpital Necker des Enfants Malades, Paris, France). The incidence of frontal sinus development is compared between a control group and the craniosynostoses group with a mean age at surgery of 3 years and a mean follow-up of 6.5 years. Pneumatization of the frontal bone seemed to vary according to the type of surgery and the age at review, but was not linked to sex and age at surgery. A classificatio…

Post-traumatic infectious complications of the frontal sinus occur more frequently after multiple fractures than after isolated fractures. The greatest frequency is found with open traumas of the sinus, due to the presence of foreign bodies and to bone and mucosal destruction. Such infectious complications are curatively treated both medically and surgically, to eliminate the bony and mucosal infection and to restore the normal physiology of the frontal sinus. Stress is laid on the preventive treatment, especially on the quality of the initial surgical treatment, either by restoring the sinus

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this paper is to present a rare case of frontal intersinus septal air cell inflammation as a cause of headaches.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 23-year-old patient was admitted to the Department of Otolaryngology and Laryngological Oncology for severe headaches during an upper respiratory tract infection. After neurological consultation including brain MRI and CT scanning of the paranasal sinuses, the inflammation of the frontal intersinus septal air cell was diagnosed. After examination, the patient was qualified for external osteoplasty. Under general endotracheal anaesthe

Draf III frontal sinusotomy is one of the most complex surgical procedures on the frontal sinus, designed to limit the risks of restenosis by ensuring unification of the two ostia and resection of the floor of the sinus. This procedure requires a good knowledge of anatomy and sufficient surgical expertise to avoid the risk of CSF leak and to limit the risk of restenosis. The surgeon can use various landmarks, consisting of foramina, bone grooves and arteries located on the anterior part of the cribriform plate to guide the procedure. The purpose of this technical note is to explain the use of

Pott's puffy tumor is a rare and serious complication of frontal sinusitis, characterized by the development of osteomyelitis and subperiostal abscess in the frontal bone. Paranasal sinus osteomas are benign osteoblastic tumors, usually seen in the 3rd and 4th decades of life. In this report, we present a case of Pott's puffy tumor due to frontal sinus osteoma in an adolescent male patient. In the literature, we found no similar case in the pediatric age group and we wanted to emphasize the development of Pott's tumor as a rare complication of chronic or recurrent sinusitis and draw attention …

The analysis of 16th century graves from Zagreb, Croatia, revealed a case of frontal sinus osteoma in a middle-aged female. This lesion was discovered during visual examination, due to postmortem breakage of the frontal bone. The significance of this finding is based on the fact that frontal sinus osteomas are very rarely reported in the palaeopathological literature, despite the fact that they account for 80% of all paranasal sinus osteomas in modern populations. This paper presents results of macroscopic and radiographic analyses of the lesion, accompanied by a detailed differential diagnosi…

Frontal sinus mucoceles are benign but locally aggressive expansile lesions that may occur years after trauma or previous sinus surgery. Their progressive enlargement can lead to bone remodeling, facial deformity, orbital involvement, and intracranial complications. Endoscopic marsupialization is currently considered the standard treatment in most cases; however, recurrence remains possible, particularly in patients with altered anatomy secondary to trauma or previous surgical manipulation. This report describes the case of a 55-year-old man with a history of severe frontal trauma after a moto

BACKGROUND: The supraorbital rim often interferes with the required upward movement of the instruments for resection of large frontal-lobe tumours through a classic supraorbital craniotomy. Here, we present the expanded trans/supraorbital approach to overcome these limitations.
METHODS: After an eyebrow skin incision, a one-piece bone flap was created incorporating the orbital rim and roof. Basal extension of the craniotomy allowed for a better intracranial visualisation with improved manoeuvrability and angulation of the instruments without using brain retraction.
CONCLUSIONS: This approach

Traditionally forehead bony lesion is approached directly through the forehead skin or invasive coronal incision resulting prominent scar. An endoscopic approach through mini hairline incisions may provide a unique way to achieve the best esthetic results, but often time the authors encounter potential soft tissue injury from the high-speed burr. The authors present a case with multiple frontal bone osteoma lesions which were successfully removed through 2 small hairline incisions with the help of an otorhinolaryngological system and an innovative mini-trocar. Significant improvement in forehe…

Benign osseous tumors of the frontal bone can be treated with endoscopic surgery, minimizing postoperative complications associated with the coronal approach and guaranteeing more functional and aesthetic results. The authors describe a case of a patient who had endoscopic removal of osteoma of the forehead using two 1 cm incisions behind the hairline. No complications such as hematoma and edema were detected. Endoscopic technique offered both good illumination and excellent magnification; it permitted safe anatomic dissection, minimum bleeding, avoiding visible scars. The outcome achieved wit…

Using morphological, histological, and TEM analyses of the cranium, we provide a detailed description of bone and suture growth in zebrafish. Based on expression patterns and localization, we identified osteoblasts at different degrees of maturation. Our data confirm that, unlike in humans, zebrafish cranial sutures maintain lifelong patency to sustain skull growth. The cranial vault develops in a coordinated manner resulting in a structure that protects the brain. The zebrafish cranial roof parallels that of higher vertebrates and contains five major bones: one pair of frontal bones, one pair…
