Reduced resting state functional connectivity in the hippocampus-midbrain-striatum network of schizophrenia patients.

Contemporary preclinical models suggest that abnormal functioning of a brain network consisting of the hippocampus, midbrain and striatum plays a critical role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Previous neuroimaging studies examined individual aspects of this model in schizophrenia patients and individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis. However, this exact preclinical brain network has not been translated to human neuroimaging studies with schizophrenia patients and therefore it is currently unknown how functioning of this network is altered in patients. Here we investigated resti

Comprehensive Multimodal Diagnostics and Rehabilitation in Persistent Post-Concussion Syndrome Following Motor Vehicle Collision.

Motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) are among the most common mechanisms of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), and a meaningful proportion of affected individuals develop persistent post-concussion syndrome (PPCS) characterized by prolonged multidomain dysfunction. Conventional neuroimaging frequently fails to capture the underlying pathophysiology, leaving clinicians without objective diagnostic evidence. We describe a 57-year-old woman who sustained mTBI in a rear-end MVC in March 2023. Head computed tomography (CT) performed at the emergency department and a subsequent brain magnetic resonance

Abnormal Local Activity and Functional Dysconnectivity in Patients with Schizophrenia Having Auditory Verbal Hallucinations.

Auditory verbal hallucination (AVH) is emphasized as a pathological hallmark of schizophrenia. Neuroimaging studies provide evidence linking AVH to overlapping functional abnormalities in distributed networks. However, no clear conclusion has still been reached. This study aimed to further explore the brain activity of patients with schizophrenia having AVH from both local activity (LA) and functional connectivity (FC) insights, while excluding confounding factors from other positive symptoms. A total of 42 patients with AVH (AVH patients group, APG), 26 without AVH (non-AVH patients group, NP

The functional neuroanatomy of bipolar disorder: a consensus model.

OBJECTIVES: Functional neuroimaging methods have proliferated in recent years, such that functional magnetic resonance imaging, in particular, is now widely used to study bipolar disorder. However, discrepant findings are common. A workgroup was organized by the Department of Psychiatry, University of Cincinnati (Cincinnati, OH, USA) to develop a consensus functional neuroanatomic model of bipolar I disorder based upon the participants' work as well as that of others. METHODS: Representatives from several leading bipolar disorder neuroimaging groups were organized to present an overview of th…

Individualized resting-state functional connectivity abnormalities unveil two major depressive disorder subtypes with contrasting abnormal patterns of abnormality.

Modern neuroimaging research has recognized that major depressive disorder (MDD) is a connectome disorder, characterized by altered functional connectivity across large-scale brain networks. However, the clinical heterogeneity, likely stemming from diverse neurobiological disturbances, complicates findings from standard group comparison methods. This variability has driven the search for MDD subtypes using objective neuroimaging markers. In this study, we sought to identify potential MDD subtypes from subject-level abnormalities in functional connectivity, leveraging a large multi-site dataset

Genetic mechanisms underlying gray matter atrophy in Parkinson's disease: a combined transcriptome and neuroimaging study.

Extensive studies have demonstrated significant gray matter atrophy in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD); however, the underlying gene expression mechanisms remain largely unknown. To comprehensively characterize the gray matter volume alterations in PD patients, we conducted a neuroimaging meta-analysis and validated the observed atrophic phenotypes in an independent dataset. Leveraging the Allen Human Brain Atlas (AHBA), we linked brain transcriptomic data to neuroimaging phenotypes to identify genes associated with PD-related gray matter atrophy. Further enrichment analyses and functio

Research updates in neuroimaging studies of children who stutter.

In the past two decades, neuroimaging investigations of stuttering have led to important discoveries of structural and functional brain differences in people who stutter, providing significant clues to the neurological basis of stuttering. One major limitation, however, has been that most studies so far have only examined adults who stutter, whose brain and behavior likely would have adopted compensatory reactions to their stuttering; these confounding factors have made interpretations of the findings difficult. Developmental stuttering is a neurodevelopmental condition, and like many other ne

Repeated blast mild traumatic brain injury and oxycodone self-administration produce interactive effects on neuroimaging outcomes.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and drug addiction are common comorbidities, but it is unknown if the neurological sequelae of TBI contribute to this relationship. We have previously reported elevated oxycodone seeking after drug self-administration in rats that received repeated blast TBI (rbTBI). TBI and exposure to drugs of abuse can each change structural and functional neuroimaging outcomes, but it is unknown if there are interactive effects of injury and drug exposure. To determine the effects of TBI and oxycodone exposure, we subjected rats to rbTBI and oxycodone self-administration and me…

Common Brain Networks Between Major Depressive-Disorder Diagnosis and Symptoms of Depression That Are Validated for Independent Cohorts.

Large-scale neuroimaging data acquired and shared by multiple institutions are essential to advance neuroscientific understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms in psychiatric disorders, such as major depressive disorder (MDD). About 75% of studies that have applied machine learning technique to neuroimaging have been based on diagnoses by clinicians. However, an increasing number of studies have highlighted the difficulty in finding a clear association between existing clinical diagnostic categories and neurobiological abnormalities. Here, using resting-state functional magnetic resonance i

Altered topological patterns of brain functional networks in Crohn's disease.

Crohn's disease (CD) has been reported to relate with the functional and structural alterations in several local brain regions. However, it remains unknown whether the possible abnormalities of information transmission and integration between brain regions are associated with CD. The purpose of this study was to investigate the topological alterations of brain functional networks and the potential relationships between the neuroimaging findings and CD clinical characteristics. 43 remissive CD patients and 37 matched healthy controls (HCs) were recruited to obtain their resting-state functional

Maternal Immune Activation and Child Brain Development: A Longitudinal Population-Based Multimodal Neuroimaging Study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal immune activation (MIA) has been hypothesized to have an adverse effect on child neurodevelopment, but only a few neuroimaging studies have been performed to date, mostly in neonates. In this population-based cohort study, we investigated the association between MIA and multiple neuroimaging modalities depicting brain development from childhood to adolescence. METHODS: We used data of mother-child pairs from the Generation R Study. To define our exposure, we measured interleukin (IL) 1β, IL-6, IL-17a, IL-23, interferon gamma, and C-reactive protein at 2 time points during

Altered central pain processing in fibromyalgia-A multimodal neuroimaging case-control study using arterial spin labelling.

Fibromyalgia is characterized by chronic pain and a striking discrepancy between objective signs of tissue damage and severity of pain. Function and structural alterations in brain areas involved in pain processing may explain this feature. Previous case-control studies in fibromyalgia focused on acute pain processing using experimentally-evoked pain paradigms. Yet, these studies do not allow conclusions about chronic, stimulus-independent pain. Resting-state cerebral blood flow (rsCBF) acquired by arterial spin labelling (ASL) may be a more accurate marker for chronic pain. The objective was
