The purpose of this study was to examine whether gallbladder function as assessed by a hepatobiliary scintigraphy was related to the symptomatology in gallstone patients and to the outcome 1 year after either cholecystectomy or watchful waiting. The study included 100 patients with uncomplicated gallstone disease. Fifty-six patients had a functioning gallbladder and 44 had a nonfunctioning gallbladder. Patients with a nonfunctioning gallbladder had significantly more vomiting and received more pain-killing injections during pain attacks. Otherwise, there were no differences in pain patterns or

Gallbladder torsion is a rare disease that requires immediate surgical intervention to avoid maternal and/or foetal sepsis and death. However, preoperative diagnosis is challenging because the disease has no specific symptoms. A 37-year-old pregnant woman at 34 weeks of gestation presented with severe epigastric pain. Ultrasonography and computed tomography scan findings showed a distended gallbladder without stones, floating from the hepatic bed, and laboratory examination demonstrated normal liver function; therefore, we made a diagnosis of gallbladder torsion and performed a caesarean secti

AIM: To investigate the prevalence, risk factors, and selection of the study population for cholecystolithiasis in an urban population in Germany, in relation to our own findings and to the results in the international literature.
METHODS: A total of 2 147 persons (1,111 females, age 42.8+/-12.7 years; 1,036 males, age 42.3+/-13.1 years) participating in an investigation on the prevalence of Echinococcus multilocularis were studied for risk factors and prevalence of gallbladder stone disease. Risk factors were assessed by means of a standardized interview and calculation of body mass index (B

Gallbladder cancer, although rare in most Caucasian populations, is among the most frequently observed cancers in native populations of North and South America, and in the Maori population of New Zealand. In all populations, there is a strong correlation between gallstones and gallbladder cancer: the risk of gallbladder cancer is approximately 4-5 times higher in patients with gallstones, than in patients without gallstones. In those populations where the onset of gallstone disease occurs in the first few decades, the risk is much higher. Obesity, which is also a risk factor for gallstones, in

BACKGROUND: There are few endoscopic retrograde cholangiographic studies dealing with the relationship between the presence of a common channel and associated pancreaticobiliary diseases.
AIMS: To endoscopically determine the incidence of common channels and assess whether the anatomy of the pancreaticobiliary ductal drainage into the duodenum has any bearing on pancreaticobiliary diseases.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We prospectively examined a common channel formation in 354 endoscopic retrograde cholangiographic cases. Cases with a common channel were divided into three groups: pancreaticobilia

Acute cholecystitis is a common disease with gallbladder dysmotility. Disease pathogenesis involves immune cell infiltration as well as changes in gallbladder interstitial Cajal-like cells (ICLCs). However, it remains unclear if or how the immune cells affect ICLC morphology, density, distribution, and function in gallbladder tissue during acute cholecystitis. In this study, we explored the acute cholecystitis-related alterations in gallbladder ICLCs in a guinea pig model, focusing on the effects of neighboring neutrophils. Adult guinea pigs were randomly divided into four groups (control, 24

The action of the motilin receptor agonist erythromycin on human gallbladder contraction, measured by ultrasound, both in normal subjects and those with gallstone disease was studied. In 17 normal subjects, oral erythromycin administration (500 mg; vs. placebo) reduced fasting gallbladder volume at 2 hours (26.2 vs. 19.0 mL; P less than 0.001), and postprandial residual gallbladder volume (9.0 vs. 4.4 mL; P less than 0.001) and the rate constant of gallbladder emptying following the meal was significantly increased. Erythromycin also reduced fasting and residual gallbladder volumes in 13 patie

The aim of this study was to identify and map the literature regarding human consumption of legumes and potential relationships with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and gallbladder diseases. Consuming legumes might reduce lipid accumulation in the liver, while potentially impeding the functionality of the bile duct and gallbladder. As dietary trends shift toward promoting legume consumption, exploring the positive and negative impacts on hepatobiliary health becomes crucial. This scoping review explored the intake of dietary pulses and legumes (excluding broade…

OBJECTIVE: Information on mortality after cholecystectomy in defined populations is limited. In this study we examined the case fatality rates and mortality ratios, based on register data.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Hospital discharge and death certificate data were linked for all patients undergoing cholecystectomy in Sweden in 1987-99. Mortality risk was calculated as the standardized mortality ratio (SMR).
RESULTS: From 1 January 1987 to 1 December 1999, 123,099 patients underwent cholecystectomy for acute or chronic gallbladder disease. Between 1987-91 and 1995-99, the incidence of cholecyste

Background Incidental gallbladder cancer is relatively rare, with an incidence ranging between 0.19 and 5.5% of all the cholecystectomies for benign disease, and carries a poor prognosis. Currently, in the literature, there appears to be some controversy about whether all gallbladder specimens should be sent for routine histopathology. The aim of this study was to investigate the need for either routine or selective histopathological evaluation of all gallbladder specimens following cholecystectomy in our institution. Methods The records of all patients who underwent a cholecystectomy (lapar

Treatment of 3 children with rare abdominal diseases are presented in the article: acute gangrenous cholecystitis in newborn, gallbladder torsion, vermiform appendix torsion. The authors recall the existence of such rare diseases, especially in those cases when clinical symptoms of acute surgical abdominal pathology do not fit into the well-known canons. Diagnosis was established intraoperatively in all children that confirms difficult diagnosis of these diseases.

Adenomyomatosis of the gallbladder (AMG) is not very common, however inherited and degenerative disease of the gallbladder with premalignant to malignant potential through metaplasia, occurring especially in a segmental form at higher-age patients, although the fundal form occurs more often. It can be found in 2-8.7% of resected gallbladder after cholecystecomy. In some cases, but extremely rarely, it has been found also in extrahepatic bile ducts. Correct pre-operative diagnosis does not exceed 30%, as it is often considered as an acute or chronic inflammatory gallbladder disease, same as in

Perforation of the gallbladder occurred in 19 (3.8%) of 496 patients with acute cholecystitis treated at one hospital in an 8-year period. The average age of the 19 patients was 69 years and the female:male ratio was 3:2. Most had a history suggestive of gallbladder disease and most had coexisting cardiac, pulmonary, renal, nutritional or metabolic disease. The duration of the present illness was short, perforation occurring within 72 hours of the onset of symptoms in half the patients; the diagnosis was not suspected preoperatively in any. In the elderly patient with acute cholecystitis who h
