Problem Gambling Risk Among Older Francophones in Ontario Canada: Surprising Results that Contradict Previous Findings of Gambling in Minority Groups.

Gambling is a popular activity among older adults. Despite this increase in popularity little research has examined gambling among this group. This is especially true for minority older adults, like Francophones in Ontario. The purpose of this study was to better understand gambling in a sample of older Francophones from North-Eastern Ontario, the first study to do so. A sample of 181 older (over 55 years) Francophones from Northeastern Ontario (M age = 68.7, SD 7.6) was recruited. This sample was compared to a sample of older adults with English as their native language that had been previous…

Solitary gambling mediates the risk pathway from anxiety sensitivity to excessive gambling: Evidence from a longitudinal ecological momentary assessment study.

Anxiety and gambling problems co-occur at high rates. Social learning theory (SLT) suggests that people high in anxiety engage in excessive gambling to reduce negative affect. Because anxiety sensitivity (AS) is a vulnerability factor associated with addictive behaviors, it is important to identify mediators in this high-risk pathway. Emerging research shows that social context mediates associations between anxiety vulnerability and addictive behaviors. This literature shows that anxiety-prone people are at increased risk for substance problems because they engage in frequent solitary substanc…

Bet Anywhere, Anytime: An Analysis of Internet Sports Bettors' Responses to Gambling Promotions During Sports Broadcasts by Problem Gambling Severity.

Promotions for online sports betting during televised sports broadcasts are regularly viewed by millions of Australians, raising concerns about their impacts on vulnerable groups including at-risk and problem gamblers. This study examined whether responses to these promotions varied with problem gambling severity amongst 455 Australian Internet sports bettors participating in an online survey. Results indicated that young male Internet sports bettors are especially vulnerable to gambling problems, particularly if they hold positive attitudes to gambling sponsors who embed promotions into sport…

Validation of the Chinese version of the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale for Pathological Gambling for individuals with gambling disorder in Mainland China.

INTRODUCTION: The escalating severity of gambling issues in China highlights the need for culturally adapted assessment tools. The Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale for Pathological Gambling (PG-YBOCS) is recognized for its ability to assess both the severity and compulsive features of gambling disorder. METHODS: Given its emphasis on the compulsive features of gambling disorder, this study aimed to validate the Chinese version (PG-YBOCS-C) in clinical assessment. The 10-item PG-YBOCS-C was developed through translation and expert review. A total of 116 individuals with gambling disorder …

Assessing the Risk of Online Gambling Products: A Replication and Validation of Behavioural Markers of Harm Using the Problem Gambling Severity Index.

In this paper, we investigate the validity of objective operator data as proxy indicators for riskier gambling as based upon an independent self-report measure. Such work is important to strengthen the validity of gambling research involving objective behavioral indicators of harm used to detect higher risk gambling or product choices. To address these aims, a total of 21,464 individual customers from a single international operator completed the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI). These data were then mapped to measures of player gambling activity and a range of objective behavioural mark…

The relation between personal relative deprivation and the urge to gamble among gamblers is moderated by problem gambling severity: a meta-analysis.

One psychosocial factor that has been identified to motivate gambling is personal relative deprivation (PRD), which refers to resentment stemming from the belief that one is deprived of a desired and deserved outcome compared to some referent. Although several lines of evidence point to a positive association between PRD and the urge to gamble, the factors that might moderate this relation have yet to be investigated. Through a quantitative research synthesis, we sought to test (a) the overall relation between PRD and gambling urges among people reporting recent gambling experience, and (b) wh…

Test of a potential causal influence of earlier age of gambling initiation on gambling involvement and disorder: a multilevel discordant twin design.

The premise that an association between an earlier age of gambling initiation and the later development of disordered gambling is causal has not yet been empirically examined. The current study used a multilevel discordant twin design to examine the nature of this association. Participants were 3,546 same-sex twins (mean age = 37.7 years) from the Australian Twin Registry who completed a telephone interview that included an extensive assessment of gambling and related behaviors. Multilevel models were employed to estimate individual (within-twin-pair comparison) and family level (between-twin-…

Subtyping pathological gamblers on the basis of affective motivations for gambling: relations to gambling problems, drinking problems, and affective motivations for drinking.

Pathological gamblers who drink when gambling (n=158; 77% men; mean age=36.0 years) completed the Inventory of Gambling Situations (IGS) and gambling and drinking criterion measures. Principal components analysis on the IGS subscales revealed negative (e.g., Unpleasant Emotions) and positive (e.g., Pleasant Emotions) gambling situation factors. Subjecting IGS factor scores to cluster analysis revealed three clusters: (a) enhancement gamblers, with low negative and high positive factor scores; (b) coping gamblers, with very high negative and high positive factor scores; and (c) low emotion regu…

Traditional gambling, betting in video games, and financial trading: Associations with gambling severity and associated harm in young adults.

The digitization of gambling has led to the proliferation of gambling-like products in areas such as video games and financial investment platforms. Although these practices share structural mechanisms and risk profiles with gambling, evidence on their relationship with associated harm and their joint role in predicting gambling severity remains limited. This study examined the association between recent participation (within the last 60 days) in these activities, along with traditional forms of gambling, and gambling severity (PGSI) and related harm (SGHS). The sample is derived from a random…
