Tooth brushing is considered a superior technique for reducing plaque accumulation. Chemical agents may be used to reduce plaque accumulation on tooth surfaces since many owners may not be willing or able to brush their dog's teeth. To develop a localized drug delivery system that offers prolonged administration of metronidazole into the periodontal pocket, muccoadhesive gel formulations containing 5% w/w metronidazole were prepared using the bioadhesive polymers: carboxymethylcellulose, methylcellulose, hydroxyethylcellulose, polyvinylpirrolidone, and carbopol. Detection of specific proteins separated by SDS-PAGE is the basis for studying specific antigens. Immunodetection of antigens is commonly performed using Western blotting technique. In this paper we have shown that it is possible to eliminate Western blotting and to detect the antigens directly within the precast polyacrylamide gels by pretreating the gels with 50% isopropanol followed by distilled water treatment. This method would be valuable for large or difficult to transfer proteins.

A case of iatrogenic granulomatous pleurisy in a 36-year-old female developed after cosmetic correction of the mammary gland shape with polyacrylamide gel (an interfall injection). Symptoms of spontaneous left-side pneumothorax developed one month after the manipulation. Histological examination of the parietal and visceral pleura biopsy revealed multiple non-immune corpuscular mature macrophagal granulomas around gel particles resulting in the pleura damage and pneumothorax. A complete recovery. This is the first publication of pneumothorax of such genesis.

In three pregnant women aged 26, 31 and 26 years with post-term pregnancy and (or) worsening preeclampsia and an immature cervix, parturition was induced by intracervical application of dinoprostone. This was followed within a few hours by bradycardia of the infants, with a labour frequency of about 5 per 10 minutes and contractions lasting at least 1 minute. After suppression of labour (in two patients, one of whom meanwhile had developed placental detachment), caesarean section was performed without delay. We studied the effects of a silicone gel bandage that was worn for at least 12 hours daily on the resolution of hypertrophic burn scar. In a second cohort, the prevention of hypertrophic scar formation in fresh surgical incisions by this bandage was also evaluated. The method was based on the inhibition of fibrin formation in a plasma-agarose gel plate, which was described as a method for assaying hemophilic factor VIII-inhibitor (Bird, 1975). A prospective, controlled clinical trial was designed to assess the efficacy of a new treatment of hypertrophic scars. Silicone gel sheeting was applied to 14 hypertrophic scars in 10 adults for 8 weeks. The treated scars and untreated, mirror-image or adjacent control scars were photographed, biopsy specimens were taken, and they were measured elastometrically before and after treatment. We used the micro- and macroimmunodiffusion test for the qualitative and quantitative measurement of anti--P. brasiliensis antibodies in serum of patients with paracoccidioidomycosis. Vidisic, a liquid gel derived from a polymerisate of acrylic acid for the treatment of dry eyes, was tested for 3 months in an open prospective study in 55 patients with severe dry eye. Vidisic spreads well over the cornea and conjunctiva and does not cause streaks. Compared with other tear substitutes so far available, Vidisic has a much longer viability, so that no more than 3 or 4 drops a day are necessary. Also, Vidisic is better tolerated and more effective. Moreover, there was a significant improvement, both subjectively and objectively, in the patients' conditions.

Gel formulations are often used in topical drug delivery, and the drug release is controlled by two factors, the thermodynamic activity of the drug and the microviscosity of the gel. The latter property has been probed by observing the dynamic light scattering from polystyrene lattices of known particle size dispersed within Carbopol gels. The effect of gel concentration and temperature has been observed and related to the ability of the gel to release a series of salicylates.

In a one-year study we tested the skin care and protective action of a new hydrocarbon gel. This gel is made of a two-component gel of petrolatum fractions in which the easily volatile and irritant white oils have been diminished. The gel contains no additives or perfumes and is therefore free of these allergens. The tests on different groups of "wet workers" ( gardeners and fish- sellers as well as workers in the fish preparation and canned-food industries) showed both objectively and subjectively good results.

An analogue of ethoxzolamide, 6-hydroxyethoxzolamide, was synthesized to enhance corneal permeability yet retain carbonic anhydrase inhibitory activity for use in lowering intraocular pressure. In a 1% suspension, the analogue caused a small but statistically significant unilateral reduction of IOP when applied to one eye of normal rabbits. When formulated in a gel vehicle, 6-hydroxyethoxzolamide caused a more prolonged and larger reduction in IOP in normal and ocular hypertensive rabbits compared with its effect in suspension or with the parent compound.
