Fluency test generation and errors in focal frontal and posterior lesions.

The number produced on fluency tasks is widely used to measure voluntary response generation. To further evaluate the relationship between generation, errors, and the area of anatomical damage we administered eight fluency tasks (word, design, gesture, ideational) to a large group of focal frontal (n = 69) and posterior (n = 43) patients and controls (n = 150). Lesions were analysed by a finer-grained frontal localisation method, and traditional subdivisions (anterior/posterior, left/right frontal). Thus, we compared patients with Lateral lesions to patients with Medial lesions. Our results sh

Sulfonylurea Therapy Benefits Neurological and Psychomotor Functions in Patients With Neonatal Diabetes Owing to Potassium Channel Mutations.

OBJECTIVE: Neonatal diabetes secondary to mutations in potassium-channel subunits is a rare disease but constitutes a paradigm for personalized genetics-based medicine, as replacing the historical treatment with insulin injections with oral sulfonylurea (SU) therapy has been proven beneficial. SU receptors are widely expressed in the brain, and we therefore evaluated potential effects of SU on neurodevelopmental parameters, which are known to be unresponsive to insulin. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted a prospective single-center study. Nineteen patients (15 boys aged 0.1-18.5 years)

Reversal of lifelong mutism after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion for myelopathy.

A 34-year-old man with a history of spina bifida occulta, fetal alcohol syndrome and mutism presented with an acute on chronic decline of unsteady gait and right arm and leg weakness over the period of a few months. The patient was non-verbal and communicated using hand gestures. MRI of the cervical spine showed severe stenosis at C4-5 with T2 signal abnormalities. Brain MRI demonstrated mild ventriculomegaly. The patient underwent an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion for severe cervical spine stenosis. Postoperatively the patient's myelopathic symptoms improved. He also became verbal an…

[Bacteremia of oral origin].

Transient bacteremia from oral cavity related to oral anaerobic bacteria may occur as a result of dental healthcare procedures but also as a result of daily gestures involving the gums (chewing and oral hygiene). The risk of presenting a transient bacteremia is related to oral cavity bacterial load and to the severity of inflammation in the oral cavity. Although bacteremia is transient, in patients with immunodeficiency or comorbidity, this bacteremia may cause extra-oral infections. The bacteremia rate and the identified bacteria vary from one study to the next, depending on the method used t…

Abuse and toxicity of methylphenidate.

The therapeutic use of methylphenidate for the management of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in children is increasing. As therapeutic use increases, the risk increases of unintentional overdoses, medication errors, and intentional overdoses caused by abuse, misuse, or suicide gestures and attempts. Side effects during therapy, which include nervousness, headache, insomnia, anorexia, and tachycardia, increase linearly with dose. Clinical manifestations of overdoses include agitation, hallucinations, psychosis, lethargy, seizures, tachycardia, dysrhythmias, hypertension, and hypertherm…

Opercular syndrome without opercular lesions: Foix-Chavany-Marie syndrome in progressive supranuclear motor system degeneration.

A patient is described with slowly progressive supranuclear motor system degeneration (primary lateral sclerosis) characterized by pure bulbar spasticity for six years until a spastic tetraparesis developed. Clinically and electrophysiologically there was and still is no evidence of lower motor neuron involvement. Recently the patient presented with a syndrome of complete inability to move face and tongue voluntarily with preservation of the ability to move them "automatically", e.g. within gestures: automatic-voluntary motor dissociation. Loss of voluntary innervation of the facio-pharyngo-gl…

On the comprehension of questions by nonspeaking children.

The question form presents both a semantic and linguistic problem to deaf and other language impaired children. The wh question requires a pronominal reference system to be well-established before the wh question can be comprehended and produced. The present study describes the language competence of a deaf, partially sighted girl who acquired language by reading it. This child neither hears nor speaks. Communication with her family was accomplished by writing in her hand, gestures, and pictures. The present study explores pronominal reference in relation to wh questions. A method of teaching …

Preterm children's early language development: Language-specific and domain-general child-related precursors.

In the dynamic and complex process of language development, some populations, like preterm-born children, are at risk of developing language delays. This review addresses possible language-specific (i.e., prosody, word recognition, gesture) and domain-general (i.e., motor, visual perception and attention, joint attention, EFs) child-related precursors to language development of preterm children in the first three years of life. We examine how each factor can contribute to the development of language in this population. We end our review by providing suggestions for future theoretical framework

Stomal construction: Technical tricks for difficult situations, prevention and treatment of post-operative complications.

The creation of a digestive stoma, whether it is a lateral stoma or a terminal stoma, is an essential gesture in colorectal surgery, but that may result in post-operative complications in 35% of patients. Surgeons are aware of the situations at the origin of complications, although there is little factual data in the literature to discriminate them. They are related to patient-specific factors (obesity, cirrhosis, portal hypertension) or to the underlying pathology (colon obstruction) or the conditions under which the intervention is performed (emergency). The aim of this review is to describe

Core Intuitions of Psychological Non-Contradiction: Infants Assume That Individual Agents Act and Communicate Coherently.

Humans generally posit that contrary mental states are unlikely to co-exist within a single mind. We tested the early ontogeny of this assumption in two domains: action and communication. Studies 1A and 1B tested whether 9-month-old infants assume that agents act coherently. Infants watched interactions between two hands whose owner(s) were invisible. In the contrary goals condition, the hand performed contrary actions-one hand reached for an object while the other impeded it. Later, during test trials, infants learned that the hands belonged to one or two people. Looking-time patterns across

Development and evaluation of a head-controlled wheelchair system for users with severe motor impairments.

This paper presents an innovative and accessible hands-free wheelchair control system designed for individuals with severe motor impairments, particularly tetraplegic users. Unlike traditional joystick-based systems, which are often unsuitable for users with quadriplegia, our system relies on intuitive head-motion detection to enhance autonomy and ease of use. The system consists of a wearable motion-sensing cap equipped with an MPU-6050 sensor which is a 6-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) to capture head gestures, processed by an ATmega328 microcontroller (a low-power 8-bit AVR microcontr…

Decoding Multi-DoF Movements Using a CST-Based Force Generation Model With Single-DoF Training.

Recent developments in dexterous myoelectric prosthetics have established a hardware base for human-machine interfaces. Although pattern recognition techniques have seen successful deployment in gesture classification, their applications remain largely confined to certain specific discrete gestures. Addressing complex daily tasks demands an immediate need for precise simultaneous and proportional control (SPC) for multiple degrees of freedom (DoFs) movements. In this paper, we introduce an SPC approach for multi-DoF wrist movements using the cumulative spike trains (CSTs) of motor unit pools, …

Effects of limb apraxia intervention in patients with stroke: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

OBJECTIVE: Limb apraxia, a complication of stroke, causes difficulties in performing activities of daily living (ADL). To date, there are no studies on the effectiveness of limb apraxia interventions. We conducted a meta-analysis to assess the effectiveness of limb apraxia interventions in reducing its severity and improving ADL. METHODS: We conducted a search of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) related to limb apraxia till December 2021 using the databases of PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Library. We measured the outcome variables in the subgroups of total apraxia (TA), ideatio

Deficient supplementary motor area at rest: Neural basis of limb kinetic deficits in Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) patients frequently suffer from limb kinetic apraxia (LKA) affecting quality of life. LKA denotes an impairment of precise and independent finger movements beyond bradykinesia, which is reliably assessed by coin rotation (CR) task. BOLD fMRI detected activation of a left inferior parietal-premotor praxis network in PD during CR. Here, we explored which network site is most critical for LKA using arterial spin labeling (ASL). Based on a hierarchical model, we hypothesized that LKA would predominantly affect the functional integrity of premotor areas including supplement

The severity and nature of motor impairment in Asperger's syndrome: a comparison with specific developmental disorder of motor function.

BACKGROUND: The aims of this study were to measure objectively the extent and severity of motor impairment in children with Asperger's syndrome and to determine whether the motor difficulties experienced by such children differed in any way from those classified as having a Specific Developmental Disorder of Motor Function (SDD-MF). Criteria derived from ICD 10-R were used to identify 11 children with Asperger's syndrome and a matched group of 9 children with a Specific Developmental Disorder of Motor Function. Children in both groups were required to have a verbal IQ of 80 or greater on the W

An intelligent hybrid-fabric wristband system enabled by thermal encapsulation for ergonomic human-machine interaction.

Human-machine interaction has emerged as a revolutionary and transformative technology, bridging the gap between human and machine. Gesture recognition, capitalizing on the inherent dexterity of human hands, plays a crucial role in human-machine interaction. However, existing systems often struggle to meet user expectations in terms of comfort, wearability, and seamless daily integration. Here, we propose a handwriting recognition technology utilizing an intelligent hybrid-fabric wristband system. This system integrates spun-film sensors into textiles to form the smart fabric, enabling intelli
