We report a case of squamous cell carcinoma of renal pelvis associated with giant hydronephrosis. A 71-year-old woman presented to our hospital with a complaint of abdominal fullness due to the right giant hydronephrosis. Although the diagnosis of her hydronephrosis was made about 20 years ago at another hospital, it had been left untreated. Computed tomography showed the right hydronephrosis of 20 x 20 x 25 cm in diameter and no evidence of tumor or calculus in the right urinary tract. For relief of her complaint, right nephrectomy was performed. The fluid content was bloody and 4,200 ml in v

METHODS: Out of 105 patients with tuberous sclerosis (TS) admitted to the Hospital Nacional de Pediatría "Juan P. Garrahan" (Buenos Aires, Argentina), we surgically treated 17 children between January 1988 and December 2000. Two patients were operated on because of epilepsy and 15 patients because of an intraventricular tumor (subependymal giant cell astrocytoma [SGCA]). In this report we focus on tumors. Twelve of the 15 patients presented with hydrocephalus but none of them had a preoperative shunt. All tumors were surgically resected using frontal transventricular or transcallosal routes. T

OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence and the clinical characterisation of jaw problems in patients with giant cell arteritis (GCA).
METHODS: the prevalence of such symptoms in patients with GCA was evaluated by performing a retrospective analysis of all patients with GCA and polymyalgia rheumatica who were diagnosed during admission to Hadassah University Hospital. Ten patients reported previously in the literature were also evaluated.
RESULTS: Six patients out of 88 (6.8%) had complaints of reduction in jaw opening. These six patients seemed to have a much more abrupt onset of disease with sh

We have experienced a case of giant cell tumor originating from the rib. A 45-year-old male was admitted to our hospital because of a mass in the left chest wall. A tumor shadow was observed in the left side of chest X ray. Chest CT, bone scintigram showed tumor originating from the left 4th rib. The tumor was suspected giant cell tumor of bone by needle biopsy examination. The tumor was completely resected with chest wall surrounding the tumor. The defect of chest wall was reconstructed with Marlex mesh and the Latissimus dorsi muscle flap. The pathological diagnosis was a giant cell tumor of

In spite of the benign nature of subependymal giant cell astrocytomas (SEGAs), some show massive hemorrhage, rapid growth, and tumor recurrence. This led us to investigate the biological behavior, cell dynamics, and tumorigenesis of SEGAs. All patients (4 men and 3 women; age range, 6-27 years; mean, 13.6 years) had features of tuberous sclerosis complex and obstructive hydrocephalus. One patient had intratumoral bleeding. In two patients, sequential neuroimaging showed a subependymal nodule growing to become a SEGA. All underwent surgical resection without radiation therapy. One tumor recurre

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) (temporal arteritis) and polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) are common, frequently related conditions in people generally over 50 years of age. Most studies have shown an association of GCA with HLA-DRB1 *04 alleles. As regards isolated PMR, however, the HLA class II genetic susceptibility varies from one population to another. Besides associations with HLA, tumor necrosis factor appears to influence susceptibility to both conditions. Genetic polymorphisms have also been considered to be important candidates as factors of susceptibility to GCA and PMR. In this regard, gene

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the prevalence of thrombophilic risk factors known to induce intravascular clotting and to assess their relationship with ischemic manifestations in giant cell arteritis (GCA).
METHODS: Eighty consecutive patients with established GCA were included: 36 with isolated temporal arteritis (TA), 14 with isolated polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), and 30 with TA and PMR. Forty-four patients (67%) had ischemic phenomena due to GCA. Twelve patients (15%) had thrombotic events unrelated to GCA (6 strokes, 5 deep venous thrombosis, and 1 myocardial infarction). A control group of 100

Polymyalgia rheumatica and giant cell arteritis are rarely associated with renal diseases such as amyloidosis. Here is a case of a 72-year-old man, who developed some renal failure and a nephrotic syndrome while presenting clinical symptoms of giant cell arteritis. Percutaneous renal biopsy showed secondary amyloidosis, and temporal artery biopsy revealed some lesions which suggested temporal arteritis. In spite of aggressive steroid treatment, chlorambucil, and colchicine, the patient's renal function continued to deteriorate and the patient is now being given hemodyalisis.

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical and laboratory features of a series of patients with giant cell arteritis (GCA) or temporal arteritis in south-western Spain (Extremadura).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective study of 25 patients with GCA diagnosed by temporal artery biopsy between 1990 and 1998.
RESULTS: Nine patients were males and 16 (64%) females. Sixteen cases (64%) presented polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR). Other clinical findings were: fever/febricula (64%), constitutional syndrome (64%), new headache (96%), visual symptoms (48%), jaw claudication (17%) and abnormal temporal arteries (17

We report 2 cases of giant-cell lesions of the maxilla in two female patients aged 42 and 22 years. The initial diagnosis was giant-cell tumor and giant-cell repair granuloma. The diagnosis of brown tumor was established at discovery of primary hyperparathyroidism. We emphasize the importance of searching for hyperparathyroidism in patients with a giant-cell lesion of the maxilla.

We report a case of Noonan syndrome associated with central giant cell granuloma. The patient was a 10 1/2-year-old boy with the chief complaint of proptosis of the right eye. He also had various malformations such as short stature, webbed neck, pectus excavatum, cubitus valgus, pulmonary valve stenosis and patent foramen ovale, a characteristic face appearance and cryptorchidism and so on. Chromosome analysis showed a 46,XY karyotype. A computed tomographic scan and magnetic resonance imaging showed a mass originated from the lateral wall of the right maxillary sinus. The patient underwent Ca

Primary systemic amyloidosis has been associated with the development of symptoms and clinical features characteristic of polymyalgia rheumatica and/or giant cell arteritis (GCA). Case reports of this clinical entity have been published, stating that the amyloid deposition leads to the symptoms of vasculitis. In this report, we present a second case in the English literature of a patient presenting with multiple myeloma-associated amyloidosis and GCA. This is the first case in which the histopathologic findings are described in enough detail to suggest a pathogenic relationship between the two

A patient with giant cell arteritis (GCA) who developed scalp necrosis (SN) is described and 23 other cases in the English language literature are reviewed. SN is rare and occurs in older patients of mean age 77 yr. Thirteen patients presented to dermatologists. Nineteen (79%) had other serious complications of GCA: visual loss in 16, gangrene of the tongue in four and nasal septum necrosis in one. The mean interval between the onset of symptoms of GCA and SN was 3.0 months in the 19 cases which antedated corticosteroid therapy. SN resulted from active arteritis and no case was definitely link
