The role of coronal contour in gingival health.

1. Total clinical crown contour is related to gingival health. 2. The subgingival convexity of a tooth or a restoration should extend facially or lingually no more than one half of the thickness of the gingiva. This protects the gingival crevice and promotes a knifelike free gingival margin, important in plaque control. 3. The facial and lingual surface contours should have gradual curvatures in all directions to facilitate the rubbing and cleaning function of the lips, cheeks, and tongue. 4. The interproximal contour of adjacent teeth, of the tooth contact areas, and of the teeth in relation

Gingival recession. The condition, process, and treatment.

The condition of gingival recession with its attendant patient complaints and additional professional concerns has been distinguished from the process of recession of the gingiva which has an obscure etiology. It has been suggested that the complaints and concerns regarding gingival recession be treated directly when they occur. Deviation from the expected anatomical form is not considered to be an excuse for therapy. The importance of the anatomical factors of alveolar bone dehiscence (long gingival fiber attachment) and lack of attached gingiva (absence of the fiber barrier) is not known. Ho

Gingival margin interfacial microleakage, staining, and push-out strengths of gingival colored composite resins in denture bases.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Staining at the gingival margin could impact denture longevity, but the behavior of gingival colored composite resins (GCCs) in this area remains unclear. PURPOSE: This in vitro study evaluated surface staining, microleakage, and push-out bond strength at the gingival margin of artificial teeth, comparing two consistencies of GCCs with two resin base materials. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Specimens included artificial teeth (Ivostar; Ivoclar AG) and two acrylic resin base materials: conventional (Ondacryl; Clássico) and high-impact (Diamond D; Keystone Industries) (n=300). Volumetric changes in free gingival graft and gingival unit graft treatments evaluated using an indirect digital method.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical one-dimensional changes such as root surface coverage, decrease seen in the amount of gingival recession and keratinised gingival width (KGW) obtained throughout a 6-month follow-up period following the treatment of Cairo class II gingival recession with free gingival graft (FGG) and gingival unit graft (GUG). Three-dimensional changes in gingival volume and thickness were also compared digitally using an indirect method. METHODS: A total of 20 patients with localised Cairo class II gingival recession were randomly separated into two

A non-invasive method for the assessment of gingival thickness in the aesthetic zone and the concept of the gingival geometric ratio in an Asian population.

The aim of this study was to investigate the gingival thickness and biologic width in the aesthetic zone (maxillary central and lateral incisors) in an Asian population using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) as a non-invasive measurement method, prior to immediate implant placement. The gingival geometric ratio is introduced as a new parameter for assessing soft tissue stability and hence predicting the aesthetic outcome. The gingival thickness, biologic width category (normal, high, and low crest), and gingival geometric ratio (shape and configuration of the gingival tissues) were assesse

Inverted T-shape free gingival graft for treatment of RT3 gingival recession defects: Reporting of two cases.

INTRODUCTION: One of the most challenging aspects of treating gingival recession type 3 (RT3) is reconstructing lost interdental papillae, which is directly related to the loss of interproximal bone. Free gingival graft (FGG) has been successfully used to increase the keratinized tissue width (KTW) with minimal trauma to the interdental papilla. This presented case suggests that FGG can be used for reconstruction of lost initerdental papilla creeping attachment also plays an additional role in improving the results. CASE PRESENTATION: The included two case reports suggest a novel technique us

Longitudinal Multi-omics and Microbiome Meta-analysis Identify an Asymptomatic Gingival State That Links Gingivitis, Periodontitis, and Aging.

Most adults experience episodes of gingivitis, which can progress to the irreversible, chronic state of periodontitis, yet roles of plaque in gingivitis onset and progression to periodontitis remain elusive. Here, we longitudinally profiled the plaque metagenome, the plaque metabolome, and salivary cytokines in 40 adults who transited from naturally occurring gingivitis (NG) to healthy gingivae (baseline) and then to experimental gingivitis (EG). During EG, rapid and consistent alterations in plaque microbiota, metabolites, and salivary cytokines emerged as early as 24 to 72 h after oral-hygie…

Possible pharmacotherapy for nifedipine-induced gingival overgrowth: 18α-glycyrrhetinic acid inhibits human gingival fibroblast growth.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This investigation aimed to establish the basis of a pharmacotherapy for nifedipine-induced gingival overgrowth. Gingival overgrowth has been attributed to the enhanced growth of gingival fibroblasts. In this study, we investigated the effects of 18-α-glycyrrhetinic acid (18α-GA) on growth, the cell cycle, and apoptosis and on the regulators of these processes in gingival fibroblasts isolated from patients who presented with nifedipine-induced gingival overgrowth. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Gingival fibroblasts were cultured in medium containing 1% FBS with/without 10 μM 1

Efficacy of collagen membrane seeded with autologous gingival fibroblasts in gingival recession treatment: a randomized, controlled pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession (GR) is one of the most common esthetic concerns associated with periodontal tissues. Recently, tissue engineering technology has been developed and applied in periodontology for the treatment of GR. The aim of this study is to compare the clinical efficacy of collagen membrane with or without autologous gingival fibroblasts under a coronally advanced flap for root coverage. METHODS: In this split-mouth, controlled clinical study, 22 sites are selected from 11 patients with Miller Class I recessions affecting canines or premolars in the maxillary arch. One tooth
